AMOUR.

          Each new days was filled with countless encounters. Whether it was cards with an earl or a stroll through the gardens with a countess, her time was spent politely meeting those here at the English court. That had become her life. Yet she yearned to be back in their manor, sitting by the fire with her husband and spending as much of the day in each other’s company as they could. But their time in England did not always feel their own.

          The afternoon had left her feeling emotionally exhausted. Too many new faces had said a number of unimportant things to her, so she retreated back to where she felt safest: at the side of her husband. Violette strolled softly through their room, skirts rustling lightly. For a moment, she paused and merely gazed over at the man she adored. The facade she upheld of ever-present polite cheerfulness melted away as her shoulders slumped slightly.

          At his beckoning, she moved immediately to his side with her hand outreached toward him. She found herself easily falling into his embrace, fitting so perfectly as she set her forehead lightly against his chest. His warmth, his scent, the sound of his voice immediately soothed her in a way nothing else could. “The ladies have been very kind to me, but I am much more content now.”

               he was grateful for her resilience, which in turn powered and strengthened his own against these strange and eventful experiences.  their departure from familiarity and comfort had landed them both in uncertain water;  their company not outwardly unwelcome at english court,  but not exactly celebrated, either.  he watched the rain continue outside, a cheek against her hair as they breathed together.  he knew how she must yearn for home, yet the possibility of facing all of this without violette would have been unbearable.  he’d sat many nights in rumination over his own selfishness in that regard, and always arrived at the same, similarly selfish conclusion: that he needed her here.  she had known that, too.

               the rain outside lashes at the thin window panes of the palace,  the occasional bite of hail over the past three quarters of an hour aiding in drawing the duke out from his daze as the calligraphy on the pages laid out before him melted into an inky swarm of words.  hunched over a desk in the dimness of candlelight and a stormy english afternoon,  albemarle recollects himself with a harsh rub of his strained eyes,  quill in the other hand as he readies himself for another turn to focus when footsteps lighter than those of his valet call his attention to the door.  there’s already a smile teasing his lips as he shifts in his seat,  facing the welcome sight of his wife in the doorway,     ❝  mon amour.  ❞     they have not been in england long;  separated for lengths of time even less,  and he beckons her towards him with a gentle whisper,  movements urgent as he stands,  reaching delicately for her hand,     ❝  i trust the ladies of court kept you well entertained?  ❞     a kiss is pressed to the top of her head,  words ushered against her ear,   ❝  i wished i had you at my side every second of viscount hereford’s pontificate. ❞
