I’ve been tabling at AN since 2009, and have seen the tabling experience at AA/Comic Market only get worse. Something that stood out to me this year was their rules about having any written text on any merchandise. Banning official logos and use of the official title is understandable - but as a staff member told me during the con, any type of “branding” is now allowed.  It doesn’t even matter if the series isn’t licensed in North America - my friend had Touken Ranbu (a game that hasn’t even been translated into English) stuff with the names of some characters written in Japanese, and a staff member came by and demanded that they be removed despite our best efforts to explain that they wouldn’t be a legal issue in North America. They claim that this is to avoid lawsuits and to protect artists, but are they really protecting anyone?

Moreover, enforcement of the rule is VERY INCONSISTENT because it’s clear that staff haven’t been adequately briefed - I’ve had different staff tell me different things about the same print. Staff #1 told me I was allowed to display a print if i covered up the handwritten title of the series with a price tag, but staff #2 said that wasn’t allowed to sell it at all. What’s more, the print in question didn’t even have the full title of the series on it (half of it was cut off by the characters in the drawing) and in the end I was just so tired of their continuous harassment that I took it down altogether. If you want to enforce this rule, it has to be consistent and artists should be made aware of exactly what they mean by “branding”. Which definition of this vague word are we going by? What exactly is not allowed? If text is generally a no-no, what about quotations? What about logos that are on the clothing of characters? If CM is meant to cater to amateur artists, this needs to be clearly explained.

Moreover, if they’re going to do checks, they should do it thoroughly, ONCE A DAY. Another friend received three warnings by Saturday afternoon and was almost kicked out - because she was told different things by different staff members. They came around a few times, and issued a warning about adifferent piece of merchandise each time. It makes no sense to have 3-4 different people with different standards issuing separate warnings.

Many of my friends and I are artist alley veterans with 5+ years of experience, but after our experiences this year, we are going to apply for Fanime 2017 instead. We encourage anyone reading to do the same if they can.

I was cleaning my harddrive in preparation for another major change in my life.  This was just me testing out a program called “Comic Works” back in 2007 I think?  Anyway…

A long long time ago, I was really into this specific game series called Suikoden. Enough to randomly make up comic pages with no real plot lines just so I could draw characters from it (specifically these two).

But as life gets busier and Konami throws more of its gaming sector into the trash… so did my interest on this series.  It really was a promising game series. 

If you’ve never played it, give it a chance and check it out on the PSN store.  The first two games are wonderful, and I’m rather fond of the fifth (Sadly unavailable in PSN I think?).
