children of apollo have their own light inside them that they can use for many uses. harnessing it and using it as a weapon, turning themselves into miniature sun, and healing. the light also tends to awaken beneath their skin if they are embarrassed / blushing. when healing, however, if they use their own light to speed the healing process, they take the pain away from their patient. they swap their light for the patients dark. harbour it for themselves. healing like that, if it is a should be fatal wound, will take time off of their life. over use of their light will take time off their life. hence why they pray to their father, and harness his light to heal people if they really need to. will, for example, used so much of his own light during the battle of manhattan, that his hands seized up and he couldn’t conjure any of his own light. he’d simply used it all. afterwards, apollo healed him, and he was given some of his father’s in the process. will has a finite amount of sunlight, which is why he’s studying to be a doctor, so he can use mortal medicine and operations to help those at camp.
