Reyna's skates scratched against the asphalt. Her driveway wasn't nearly as long as the ramp at the skatepark, but it was enough for Reyna to practice while the park was getting remodeled.
“Look both ways before you cross the street.” Hylla Ramirez said as she stuffed a brown leather jacket into a white leather bag, put on a pair of sunglasses and hopped into the drivers seat of her car.
As soon as Hylla began to reverse, Reyna gathered herself from the bottom of the driveway and allowed Hylla to fully depart. Hylla called for Reyna and rolled down her window beforr pulling off. She said: “I'll let you know when my shift ends. Here's money for pizza, and don't talk to strangers. Got it?”
“Got it!” Said Reyna. She folded the money and put it in the pocket of her cargo shorts.
“You have a sister?” Piper came from behind and asked, amazed. She often wondered what it was like.
“Yeah. She's studying real hard to get herself into a good school and make us some more money.”
“Cool.” Piper said. “You wanna order Pizza?”
The Sandlot was possibly the worst movie ever made. Reyna disagreed, shoving another slice of pizza in her mouth. “They're always fighting!” Said Piper, “why is that good?”
“Duh, it's not the fighting, it's what they say. The movie is funny now shush.”
Piper laughed. “reyna, are we allowed to watch a pg 13 movie?”
“Not if we don't say anything. Eat some more.” Reyna kept her eyes on the screen.
“Is your sister gone all the time?” Piper asked. She leaned a bit closer.
Reyna shrugged. “When she needs to be. Her boss, Thalia, is really strict. And her co worker, Zoe, is strict too. They work at the skate park, but while it's getting remodeled they're working at some other place for girls apparently.”
“Sometimes. But I have you, right?”
“Absolutely.” Said Piper. She jumped on the couch and raised a fist. Reyna watched as Piper jumped.
A small gash appeared on Piper's left knee. Reyna ran away and into the next room. “Piper!” She said, “no blood on the floor!”
“Sorry!” Piper said with a shaky voice.
Reyna sighed. “You're gonna need me,” she said as she applied the bandage.
“Already do.” Piper said to herself.
