“I said - why are you following me?” It was too loud in that bar to have an actual conversation; but it was a good place to stay alive. Too crowded, too many witnesses. A good way to disappear among the dancing crowd. Ian had disappeared in said bar, then used the opportunity to face the woman he knew had been following him around. And here they were now, face to face, his hand in his jacket pocket and fingers curled around the knife. Just in case.

Jessie didn’t back down. Too many witnesses meant he wouldn’t do anything to her. He was someone who could help her even if she didn’t have enough to afford him. Hell, she barely had enough to afford rent for the next month let alone food for her little girl.

“You have the means to help and I need help.” Her tone was firm yet soft. Why would he help someone like her? Some waitress at a hole in the wall pub who spent most of her life running from her past. A past that was starting to come back to haunt her. Only skill she had was as a thief so if anything, she could assist him in some way. “Please...”

“I can always recreate the murder that lead you to me. Not like it wouldn’t be hard to make it look real as long as we get everyone involved like the Chief and the medical examiner.”

The tone in his voice made her pause in rubbing his shoulders. She really hadn’t expected his response to the idea of being kidnapped. Dropping her hands, she moved to stand in front of him again, her hands going to his shoulders and locking eyes with him.

“You would know exactly where I was and it wouldn’t be like last time. He hasn’t been active in a while so there wouldn’t be that threat. You trust me…right?” Mikah asked, never once leaving his eyes. He may not admit to it but he had other ways of telling her he cared. After all, she had shot him and he didn’t throw her out of the house.

“No, I don’t trust you.” He did – even with his life. “But because he hasn’t been active in a while you need to be even more careful. That isn’t the point, though.” Per sighed. “The point is, I won’t let you do that, your idea is shit. I would rather kill that girl with my own two hands than to let you get kidnapped again – even if it is just some fake thing.” No, he wasn’t going to take that risk.

“I have an easier plan and a less dangerous one at that: I sleep with her and let that info slip. They will drag her away from me instantly. How about that?”

Mikah was surprised as how quickly jealousy ripped through her veins. Her eyes flashed for a moment and she couldn’t stop her hands from hopping his shoulders, causing her nails to dig into his skin. While they hd never said they were exclusive, she didn’t like his idea of sleeping with the new girl…or anyone really.

“It would work if she had ever shown interest but Larsen has a better chance of getting with her than you. Least she’s flirted with him.” Mikah said, pulling back a bit to lean against the edge of her desk. “I could just tell Chief that I need you down here for a few weeks. Maybe it will get her reassigned for the remainder of her training.”

With their luck, Ronan would be reassigned to Cold Cases with them and that would just be counterproductive since most of how they solved the cases were bordering on illegal. “What about sticking her with Thor? He took over as lead on my case and it would be a conflict of interest if she was still assigned to you but helping him.”

“I was thinking I could take a contract or write up one with a museum to test their systems, steal a couple things. I would return them at the end if she can’t find them. I would have to tell the Chief but I think he would be on board. She and you are assigned but you’ll only there for support if she needs it.” Mikah suggested, keeping pressure on his shoulders and smiling softly at his groan.

“We could also do a kidnapping case. I’ve got a couple friends in the underground who could make a convincing scene and I really wouldn’t mind a vacation to the Mountains. I did find a romantic little village that’s quite heavy in Viking traditional buildings. Would make for a nice little vacation spot if we buy one of the homes. It only took you a couple weeks to find me last time. I wouldn’t tell you anything other than it’s set up so she can deal with you being a feral wolf. Might actually make her back off.”

Mikah had a feeling that Per wouldn’t be a big fan of the idea of her being kidnapped again, even if it was staged but Mikah would be lying to herself if she didn’t find it sexy just how possessive and protective he got after that…and the sex had been incredible.

“Yes…but I’m a homicide detective,” Per reminded her. His head was tilted forward to give Mikah’s hands more room on his shoulders. Touch wasn’t exactly something he was all too keen on – but this was an exception. She just knew where to touch him in order to have him relax.

“Theft and kidnapping cases are none of my business, they’ll be transferred to someone else.” And if he decided to barge in, there would definitely be trouble waiting for him again – worst case scenario: he had to spend even more time with that annoying rookie.

“Besides,” Per opened his eyes and shot Mikah a side glance over his shoulder, “even if it’s just staged, I’m not going to let you get kidnapped.” Not again. Never again. He cared too much about her, even if he refused to admit it.

“Not if you have me call you in sick.” Mikah pointed out, getting out of her chair and moving around to stand next to him. She bent down and gently cupped his chin before kissing his forehead. “She’s still new. Give her some time and she’ll eventually calm down. We could set something up, a fake crime where she’s got to manage it on her own. It’s been a few years but I’m sure I could arrange something. Just depends on how badly you want her traumatised and if she’s a bloodhound like you.”

Granted, Mikah was just as possessed with the Serial killer as Per was since she spent those days in the bloody warehouse but still, it wouldn’t do them any good to pull a stunt like this if the new kid was just as bloodthirsty.

“If you call in sick, she’s shoved off to someone else for a day and we could plan it out as well as break in the new bed.” Mikah cocked her head to the side and looked Per over for a moment before moving behind him and pushing her hands down on his tense shoulders.

His brow rose. Everyone knew he and Mikah were together, and they usually avoided the couple at all costs. Having her call him in sick? As if that would work. Head cocked back, he glanced up at her tiredly. That rookie – whatever her name was, he couldn’t remember it and didn’t want to – was exhausting. Even more than work itself.

“Where she is he murder victim?” A glimmer of hope mixed with the tiredness in his eyes. Out of the question, though. A groan broke from his throat when Mikah began to massage his shoulders. He never noticed how tense his muscles were until she pointed it out to him.

“If I call in sick,” Per countered, “I’ll get used to it and just stay at home for a week.” Or longer. “What kind of case are you thinking about? I just want to get rid of that girl for as long as possible…”

HIS LIPS ARE PALE – have lost their usual hue of pink H O U R S ago,, && he can’t feel his feet. Snow is piling up quickly all around him && on his head,, hair covered in a thin layer of frost,, his black cloak flecked with snowcrystals. The Black Lake is peaceful,, && watching the snow dissolve into the inky water is almost HYPNOTIZING. Maybe if he stands here for l o n g enough he would become part of the scene – frozen still. How l o n g would that take? Probably too l o n g. But the cold is soothing. It’s numbing && if he stares out at the lake for long enough,, he can keep his mind from revisiting tonight’s events.

Normally Severus is hyper-aware of his surroundings,, but it was nearly dawn so he doesn’t quite expect anyone to be out here. He doesn’t realize Mikah is approaching until she is about twenty steps away. A swift turn,, && he relaxes slightly when he recognizes her. Not that he wants company,, but if anyone,, he’d rather have her here. At least he wouldn’t have to LIE to her. She’d find out what happened – what the Dark Lord had asked him to do – whether he told her or not.

She had wondered where he had vanished too after dinner. It wasn’t like the Potions Master to just….vanish without being called by one of the two bastards he had a call a Master…she hadn’t seen him flinch like he had many times before when the call came suddenly. Mikah was finishing her rounds when she noticed a black dot out by the lake. Afraid that it might have been a student, Mikah rushed to her rooms and grabbed a thick blanket. She would make sure they were warm before she took enough house points to put them in the red.

The freshly fallen snow did dampen her footsteps as she got closer…only to realise it wasn’t a student but the missing Professor. His sudden movement caused her to stop and she only moved closer when she realised he hadn’t pulled his wand out.

“Severus…what in the hell are you doing out here?” She said, holding out the warm blanket. She knew he wasn’t a fan of being touched but he looked next to frozen to death.

“Several of us are.” She said, giving Eric support and using him for support. Her head snapped around when she heard the faint pop of people appearing in the distance. “Shit…come on.”

Mikah half dragged, half carried herself and Eric off the battlefield and toward the tree line. It felt like hours but they made it and Mikah found herself breathing harder than she realised. Pain suddenly ripped threw her side and she hissed, looking down at her now bloodied rib cage. She hadn’t felt anything hit her and from what she could tell, Eric wasn’t bleeding from his side. Staggering a bit, she put more weight against the taller Slytherin and shivered.

“No, I mean—“ He didn’t get further, couldn’t explain himself, as the noises behind them had him freeze up. They thankfully managed to get away before anyone could see them, though, helping each other out; where one’s leg was too stiff and giving in, the other’s replaced it.

His arm around Mikah’s shoulders, Eric sucked in a deep breath as soon as they were out of sight and hidden by the dark forest. There was no time to rest, it seemed, though. He frowned at her hiss, glancing down as well. Was that blood on her clothes? “Mikah…” Staggering, Eric pressed his hand against her side. “Wha’s wrong? I—is tha’ blood? Wha’ can I do? I mean…wha’—wha’ d’I have ta do?” He had no experience in patching up wounds whatsoever; that was Mikah’s expertise. So naturally panic was rising.

“There’s a cottage by the Loch. We…we need to get there. My bag has bandages or just keep pressure.” She knew she would leave a trail if they kept moving slowly. “There’s also a pepper up and a strong pain killer in my bag. Take it. The faster we move, the faster we stay ahead of the Aurors.” Said bag was wedged between her and Eric, however. She would have to move away from him for him to get to the bag.

“I’m not going to bleed out, so calm down. We just need enough so they don’t track us on a blood trail.”Mikah was panting slightly but she found it sweet that Eric was freaking out. “You want the potions or do you have enough built up to appease us to the Loch?”

“Yes, sir.” She mumbled under her breath, turning her attention to the potion at hand. It wasn’t like she was making a pass at him…well kinda but Mikah knew that any chances with Severus were slim to none. It didn’t take long for her focus to shift fully on the potion, waiting for the silver vapour from the new potion.

She had brought her own under the condition that Severus had looked them over. So far, he had approved. They had been ingredient grown and prepared without magic interference and so far, the potion was looking better than it it would have been under magical interference.

“Severus? The Wolfsbane potion… what color should it be at this point?”

Severus glances in the mirror above his sink and quickly wipes away a speck of dried cedar paste off his cheek. If anything, he is glad that she brings the subject back to the potions they had been working on all afternoon,, && that she didn’t make a point of his rather agressive reaction to her attempts at assisting him.

❝ It should be a grey-ish kind of green at present,, though hues of silver should be appearing any minute now, if all has gone as planned. ❞ A few quick strides have him standing next to her cauldron again,, and he nods approvingly.

❝ just a pinch of quicksilver,, seven stirs counter clockwise and you should be able to leave it to simmer for the next four hours. ❞ he instructs,, moving back to his own table to mince some myrrh to add to his own brew.

Mikah followed his instructions and smiled. It had as he said it should but something seemed different, like it had more silver than normal and Mikah wondered if it had something to go with the muggle grown herbs. She watched him for a moment before walking over and looking at his potion. She didn’t say anything for a moment before she sat down at the desk.

“What are you brewing?” Mikah finally asked, her green eyes not leaving the bubbling potion.

“A massacre.” She said softly, holding her wounded arm to her side while trying to help her fellow Slytherin sit up. It would be a while before they would be up to facing anyone in battle but they had to leave the field before the Order or the Dark Lord decided to come back and kill anyone who had survived. “He had intel that they were hiding out near here but it had been an ambush…for both sides it looks like.”

Mikah recognized a few faces from those who had fallen for the Order as former classmates but the odd thing was….all the magic she felt was all dark. Like the Order was trying to kill out their members with dark magic while the Dark Lord just sent his Death Eaters into an damn near unsurvivable mess.

“Can you move? We need to get to the Loch, it’s on the other side of those woods.” Mikah nodded toward the woodline before looking down at Eric again. “I’m sure we can find an abandoned cottage to lay low in until our magic heals.”

There was a firework inside his head, right behind his eyes, mercilessly hammering against his skull. The pain snaked its way down his neck into his shoulders and arms. Something was burning in his leg, too. But all in all - he was alive. Yet.

He swallowed and sat up, his movements slow even with Mikah’s help. Even that pace was too fast, though, as the second he moved, his head started to spin. Oh, this was just wonderful. “I–I think I can…” Eric muttered weakly. “Jus’ no’ too fast.” His fingers curled around Mikah’s arm, and after sucking in a deep breath, the former Slytherin pulled himself up on his feet. That move alone cost him almost all the strength left in his body.

“I wanna ge’ outta here,” he admitted. “I’m done with this, Mikah…”

An eyebrow rose. It was one of those famous ones; the one that usually rose before Ian was about to shoot someone point blank, or told them to leave him the fuck alone and then broke their legs or arms or maybe just some few fingers when they were lucky. “Before you say anything,” he started, already turning his back on Mikah. He trusted her enough to do so, since his own son was trusting her as well. “My answer is no. No, I won’t play fucking babysitter. No, I won’t sit here staring at some fucking child for hours while you and your fiancé are out dining in some fancy fucking restaurant. I have better things to do.” He didn’t. “I need to prepare for a fucking job that needs to be fucking done.” He turned back around to her. “What the fuck do you want?”

“For you to spend time with your grandson.” Mikah bit out, her arms crossed. “You missed his birthday and in missing his birthday, you pissed off your son. Believe it or not, Thomas sent a birthday gift for Riley. Says a lot when Thomas is being a better grandfather.”

Some fancy dinner. Ha! She and Eric had both taken jobs and spent less time together because of it. “It’s not a fancy dinner. I got a lead on the jackoffs that tried to kill Eric. We are asking that you watch Riley for a couple of days since it takes you two weeks to prep for a job. It’s not like you’ll be bored by any means.”

Riley had become quite a thief himself. So far, Mikah and Eric had found Eric’s blue blanket and Mikah’s lock pick set under his blankets. How the brat got into the top shelf of their closet was still a mystery but it had caused them to install cameras. Not that it help…other than catching Eric steal brownies from the kitchen.

Mikah couldn’t help but laugh. “Really? It’s not like you lost it. You’re just the best despite being a pain in the arse and I heard you were up for rotation on rookies. How did you manage to get down here without her following?”

She was half expecting to hear the elevator ding and the sound of his new shadow rushing down the hall. It wasn’t like she had to be down here, Mikah had a corner office one floor above the detective’s pool and she could always look over the edge and watch what the others did but she rarely used it. The basement was a lot cooler and she could never make that office cold.

“Oh, I got a notice that our new mattress is set to be delivered tomorrow. You want to take the day off to make sure it’s delivered?” Mikah really couldn’t take the day off, not that the cases couldn’t wait another day. Some had waited 20 years before she got her hands on them but the evidence box couldn’t leave the temperature controlled basement without any unforeseen damages. She saw the look on his face and she shook her head, “You can always sneak down here when it’s done and help me with this. I’m sure we can stand to have a blood free mattress for a couple of nights.”

Yes, how did he manage to get rid of that rookie? It probably had to do with him telling her to pick up files that didn’t exist at an office that didn’t exist, and now the poor thing was running around the building probably looking for Per. Whatever. He just wanted his peace, if only for a few minutes.
