Kitchen Nightmares | Marana
truitt-storyâ:
âNo, Iâm good,â Tiana said out of instinct. She got asked that question all the time. Not usually by the waitstaff, usually by the line cooks, but the answer was always the same. No, she was good.Â
Something you learned pretty quickly working in the restaurant industry was when to ask for help. And in the beginning, when Tiana was younger, she had been better at it. But over the years, she had gotten good at juggling things on her own, and a part of her felt this personal pride in being able to do things all on her own. That feeling had only grown during culinary school.
So she brushed Marisa off. And then a pot full of rice started hissing angrily. âActually, uh, can you reduce the heat on that? Unless you got tables waiting. I can take care of it.â
`
Without a momentâs hesitation, Marisa reached over to reduce the heat on the rice, and even reached for a wooden spoon to stir it to make sure no grains of rice got all burnt to the sides of the pot. She set the spoon down and turned back to Tiana with a bright grin.
âIâm not busy! My tables are all cashed out at the moment. I told the host to skip me for a while to see what you needed back here. Uh, if thatâs okay.â

truitt-storyâ:
âShe what?!â Tiana looked up from the onion to stare at Marisa, exasperated. She knew, logically, that this was not Marisaâs fault. This was the opposite of Marisaâs fault. Marisa was here for her shift and she was not the one calling out two hours in advance of when her shift was supposed to start. She was also not the one who had just spilled tomato sauce all over the floor.Â
But Tianaâs mind felt like a stovetop full of sauces right now. Any minute, something could boil over. It wouldnât take much. She was stressed, and years in this industry had taught her to manage stress, but that was before she had a goddamn ancient sword trapped in the Faery realm and an evil vampire spell on her mind as well!
She tipped the onions into the remaining half of the tomato sauce and looked at Marisa impatiently. âWhat happened? Is she sick or something?â Tiana was already calculating all of the extra things she was going to have to do tonightâ maybe sheâd even put on a white shirt and help with serving. She didnât really want to ask anyone to come in last-minute or work a doubleâŠ
`
Thaaaaaaat reaction tracks, Marisa thought, biting at her lip.Â
âUh...yeah.â Marisa didnât bother to add the flavor text about how it was the day after her birthday. âSheâs sick.â
Marisa probably should have turned and walked out of the kitchen, but Tiana seemed like she really could use a hand. She hesitated for only a moment before steeling herself and asking.
âHey, Tiana? Do you...want a hand in the kitchen?â
Kitchen Nightmares | Marana
Tiana might have put a little too much on her plate.
Figuratively, yes, between Knights duties and everything with the play over the past month and the âSoup of the Weekâ initiative she had started for no reason except she felt the need to distract herself from all the regret and confusion she felt over her love life, but also literally. The lobsters were boiling over as Tiana tried to finish up chopping the onions, but there was such a sheer number of them, and she knew she should leave this to the line cooks, but Tiana needed it to be perfect. Tonight was the debut of the Late Summer Lobster Bisque, after all.
She had just finished half of the current onion when she heard someone behind her and jumped, breaking her focus. âDonât sneak up behind me like that!â Tiana said, accidentally knocking into the pot of tomato sauce and spilling it, then slipping on the sauce and knocking half of the onions off of the prep area, too. âDamn itâ what is it?!â she added impatiently.Â

Marisa had long since learned that her boss, as wonderful as she was, was terrible when it came to asking for help. Especially when she needed it most. To be fair, the food was all Tianaâs recipes, so it wasnât as if just anybody could step back into the kitchen and take over...but goodness, surely there was something someone could do!
After Marisa tried to talk to some of the other servers and feel out of any of them were going to help, it was clear that, actually, no. No, nobody was.
Naturally, Marisa had to muster up the courage to ask her boss if she could help her somehow.
She was about to do that when the phone rang, and Marisa picked it up expecting it to be someone asking about hours...ohhh boy. It was a call-out. Shit. Okay, new mission. Tell Tiana that one of their servers for the night was âsickâ the day after her birthday.
âI--- oh, Iâm so sorry! I didnât mean to scare you. Itâs just, Caitlin just called. Sheâs calling out.â

For Anna, there really didnât seem to be a better way of coping with a stressful situation than eating a lot of chocolate. Which was⊠probably not very good for her pores, she thought, catching sight of a zit in a shiny surface nearby (these were the kinds of things she thought about now, apparently).Â
âOh, no, I was just making a recommendation. You seemed kinda stressed out. Usually I recommend chocolate for that.â Anna explained, peering at the customer curiously. Maybe she had misread her. âI can get you something else. You donât have to order that.â
`
âOhhh,â Marisa whispered, her misreading dawning on her. âWell, you have quite the sales pitch, if you did do a competition, youâd for sure win!â
She took a second to look at the options. So many goo choices! Humans were amazing werenât they?
âCould I get a brownie sundae with cinnamon roll ice cream?â

Anna felt like she was finally starting to come out of the funk she had been in for most of the summer. The dream had put a lot of things in perspective, and honestly, Anna had thought she was kind of a badass in it. She was surprised by how confident she had been. But more importantly, there had been all this revolution stuff happening, and Annaâs petty personal drama barely mattered.
It was weirdly encouraging. To know that, in the grand scheme of things, there were much more important things to focus on.Â
But not everyone felt that way, of course. Anna had gotten pretty lucky, not having to live through any super horrific stuff, but not everyone had. So the Ice Queen had a few extra-chocolatey specials, and Anna was trying her very best to be supportive when people came in looking kind of down.
âYou look like you could really use a Chocolate Dream Sundae,â Anna said, leaning across the counter and giving the customer a concerned look. âGo ahead. Order it. You know you want to.â
Marisa, being a siren used to living in the sea, often thought human sweets were...well. Too sweet. She wasnât much for chocolate but seeing as this girl was eager to sell one...maybe she had a reason?
Like, like, it was a promotional thing! Or maybe the ice cream girls were seeing who could sell the most!
âIt does look good!â Marisa only half-lied. Hey, if you liked chocolate, it was probably great. âIs there a present for the cashier who sells the most? Because Iâll totally help you win.â

Look Both Ways || Maritin
geehosaphatâ:
Martin began the walk to Hatterâs, gesturing to the woman to follow at his side. âI donât mind! I canât survive without coffee, personally. I drink far too much of it if Iâm honest.â He shot Archimedes a look to keep his thoughts to himself and, to Martinâs surprised, the familiar seemed to listen.
âOh, Merlin, itâs nothing,â he sighed, rubbing his right temple and contradicting his own words. âJust classes and work and now ruining your drink. Itâs all rather⊠suffocating, in a way.â He sighed. âI wouldnât want to waste your time with it all.â
`
âYou have social anxiety something?â Marisa asked bluntly. âThatâs okay, a lot of people do. But I promise Iâm not mad if that helps?â
Did it help? She hoped it helped.
âWhat are you studying?â
