𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐃 a sky like this. blacker than the grave and more bountiful than the dead, a murder of clouds turned the night into an event horizon. their voluminous bodies, so swollen and opaque, extinguished the ceaseless brilliance of the seven moons, and refused to relinquish its captives to the morning fire that rose without notice behind the dour curtain. it felt like the end had finally come to hapes. a superstition born from an animal brain. still, fear, no matter how misplaced, was contagious. nerves and whispers accompanied the artificial light that flooded the interior to keep the darkness at bay.

      out of curiosity, rain slipped his hand through a paneless window. it was as if the portion of his limb outstretched was severed clean the wall of morning-night was so thick. like all members of his species, lowlight meant a fresh horde bruises or a deadly tumble off something with a ledge. but only because most hapans used only their eyes to see. rain’s senses spoke to him differently. microspheres of moisture in the atmosphere illustrated the world when sightlines could not. so even if the sensation of his extended limb was denied, rain would still see how his wrist waved as he turned it over, his fingers flowing in a gradient of motion. clearer than the sparkling rays of dawn in the vision behind his eyes.

      rain retrieved his arm and tested its movement. translucent scars left behind by downpour glistened in the hungry light. he was about to continue on, following the line of windows to his destination when an invisible current he’d trained himself to recognize any shift in its flow suddenly dammed his attention. rain found her right where he expected. the newly returned heir, still lacking the unique . . . shine of her lineage. hard to call the young woman glittering, but with each day this rey-shaped kira ka was looking more and more like her family. in facial structure alone. the rest remained untamed.

      a trend rain prayed continue. if not for the sake of sindel’s designs than for all the wrinkles ta’a chume’s granddaughter was no doubt carving with her willpower.

𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐂’𝐒 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐎 𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒 -𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒 super freighters were a sniveling wail from what their name suggested. by design, the ship was no succulent queen fit to rule systems with a doonium fist. nor was the construction fit to brush against the hull of the word “super”, even as a darkly dressed joke. little more than a scrap heap cobbled together to capitalise on cheap niches in the galactic marketplace, ghtroc industries sold what little soul they had when they decided to not only release their deathtrap, but pollute the market when the false empress failed to earn back their investment.

      with no weapons and only flimsy shields to her name, ghtroc’s infamy was meant to transport fifty-thousand metric tons of mercantile. and, at best, eight passengers. only eight. yet twisted remains of a mediocre fleet of these damnable freighters were scattered across the beach and well into the shallows. each had been overstuffed with tarsunt refugees in the place of replaceable cargo. as per the resistance's last contact with the captain, the freighters were successful in bypassing a first order blockade.

      but those pretty smuggler tricks that could outwit tyrants proved paltry against nature’s wrath.

      wreathed in beads of blood and sweat, rain stood transfixed by a small arm protruding from beneath a smoldering slab of wreckage. the fingers looked so small, curled into an ochre palm. the hapan had never seen a tarsunt in the flesh before, but he imagined that a hand that size belonged to . . .

      a sigh shuddered from the damp cloth shielding his lungs from the smoke. his breath tasted of metal.

      the small retinue of rebels rain had accompanied to meet the refugees were already at work searching for survivors. rain doubted they’d find any. not on the shoreline. escaping the morbid pull of the scene before him, rain’s attention turned to the demarcation of deep water. if there were any still alive, the sea would not tell him. she had no intention of sharing her catch.

      even more heroes arrived, summoned by the unanswered prayer of a distress signal. uniforms bled together as the rescue team broke around him. only one stood out among them. rain never looked, focus returned to the fingers growing paler by the second. he identified the man by the attitude in his boot-falls alone.

"'Earthrealmer', huh?" He rose a brow. Out of all the nicknames he obtained over the years that was a new one to his ears. His almost greying goatee with only one eye to cover for him. The skull spray painted on his chest made him appear as the devil to the criminals that roam the streets of any city. The bringer if death. But this man was different. It made him think if it was one of Thor's other dimensional pals coming to say 'hello'. But it made frank think.

He seemed unimpressed. Was he meant to be? He doubted it. But he did find it interesting to see a man bend water like it was a extension of himself as he crossed his arms." I was expecting someone else. Not..thus." his tone was seemingly stoic. His face however seemed to hold a constant sense of anger and rage. It's what embodied him as blood dripped free from that skull around his chest. He wasnt afraid to get his hands dirty as he cocked his head in intrest." If it was the speaker of the joke wasnt laughing as he crossed his arms. Not before withdrawing a cigar and lighting it. He could decipher if this man was a criminal or not. It all depended on him..

      by his speech and in the way he held himself, rain pinned the bloodsoaked man for a lowborn brute. one dedicated to toning his physicality while savagely neglecting the muscle shivering in his skull. it was rain’s hope that the mortal would prove that notion wrong. a welcome surprise, finding an ally that did more than pretend competency. but if not, the edenian could hardly call it a loss. often it was the greatest of fools who best served a higher purpose.

      ripples stuttered in the middle of their waves as a single dark brow arched curiously. ❝ someone else? like who, earthrealmer? ❞ not yet offering any interest in the stranger’s name despite having given his own.

𝐎𝐈𝐋 𝐒𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐀 suspended in dark collectives of heavy rain. all that remained of three full grown men who knew none the wiser that a shift in forecast was a fatal fate.

      despite the continuous fall, the surface tension remained a placid mirror. hardly a ripple quivered even as boots outlined in a vivid dance of gold paused a toe length away from the gory contents. water patterned exposed shoulders, vanished into the waves of decadent fabric that formed a hood over the man’s shadow-rimmed eyes. yet he remained untouched, the oppressive moisture seemingly banished.

      ❝ i do not question your competency, earthrealmer. nor do i suffer chances. ❞

      a coppery miasma too pungent to be washed away crawled its way through the threads of the mage’s mask. an invitation for rain to search the remains of his victims who never truly had the chance to make themselves foes. there was a touch of humorous vulgarity in the way the massacred chunks of human remains spun in slow circling, leaking branching trails of blood. all of outworld’s losses at earthrealm’s fists during liu kang’s supposedly honoured tournaments, yet that was the worst the latter’s streets offered?

ㅤIt was too bad Rain didn't have the guts to make that mange comment out loud - preferably where Chewie could hear it. Poe probably would have enjoyed seeing how arrogant the bastard could act with no arms.

ㅤAs someone who put on a show as often as Poe did, who knew the value of visible confidence for oneself and others, he wasn't put off by Rain's apparent lack of fear for his safety. Chewie would blow him out past the outer rim if he confirmed that he was a threat, and that was a fact. Poe would only need to make sure that he didn't get blown up right along with their likely unwelcome guest, but it wouldn't be the first time he had to make himself scarce for some explosions.

ㅤ"Ally, huh? Most allies have enough respect for the General to identify themselves," he pointed out, no lapse in his guard because it was about 50/50 that this pain in the ass was lying. They were expecting representatives from Hapes, and he was under the impression that the Hapans would be sending women - all of them had been referred to as 'she' in the discussions he'd been part of, and he hadn't thought to ask, but it seemed like an important detail now that this man was slithering around him. He wasn't letting him have his back. "So maybe get to the diplomacy, cause your unpleasantries aren't doing you any favors."

𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐒𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐒 pulsed like a heart on a moderated axis. the reverberating tension on its glass surface barely discernible to the human eye. “poe dameron, i presume.” voiceless steps came to a drifting end. the current of rich fabric anointed to his shoulder cascaded into a perfect pose as if carved from one of batuu’s petrified ghosts. fingers wrapped themselves purposefully around the staff’s slim body as a tingle of atmosphere formed around the mirrored globe. ❝ one of general leia organa’s most trusted commanders. i’d seen holos, but i expected you to be less . . . scruffy in person. ❞

      ❝ interesting. i have yet to draw a weapon or make a threat. yet here you are with blaster aimed, accusing me of being unpleasant. such a strange place the greater galaxy is. i’m beginning to understand what inspired our foremothers’ ideas about men. ❞ a pause while the hapan’s glittering stare struck poe from boot to bang, ❝ what passes for one. ❞

𝐒𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐒 since the last drop of summer fell from the sky, but the humidity outlived the monsoon that ushered it. without the dance of the most free-spirited element to cleanse the city of its morose cousin, a dense layer of moisture clung onto sun do like a shroud, converting its bustling thoroughfares into inescapable saunas. a single step across a threshold drenched the most wispy of seasonal fabrics into a sodden film that adhered like a second skin. walls provided no shelter as oppressive vapors collected in rooms, forming condensed beads on stone and wood.

      even the airy architecture of the palace offered no sanctuary, the peaks of its grandeur barely visible above the coagulated mist. yet without any off-shore wind or mountain blessing, the spacious scenery offered a teachable opportunity.

      rain was overly cautious selecting a spot. thousands of common years at the palace meant he didn’t need to see through the opaque to know where the gardens’ most fragile antiquities were hiding. but there was no such thing as misplaced paranoia when it came to relics older than earthrealm’s first sapient beings.

      bordering satisfaction, the hydromancer posted himself on the edge of an ornate pond. the rustle of his boots on the ivory stone outlining the water’s edge was an inaudible wisp in the heavy air. undulating scales of molten gold flashed through the grey whenever the pond’s occupants broke the surface. the only other life daring stifled lungs aside from himself, and the young woman nearby.

      dark eyes partially obscured by the shadow of hood considered her thoughtfully after one last visual rove around the informal arena for an elusive accident waiting in the fog. ❝ what will you be, princess, a breeze or a gale? ❞

                           moisture clung to the back of her hand as leia drew it across her brow, sinking onto the elaborately carved bench which thankfully appeared around one well-appointed garden turn.   painted lips curved earthward, a soft, chiding voice which sounded much like one of her late aunts echoing in her head.    ( you wouldn’t be sweating now if you had simply not run.   what princess sprints across a garden? )    grimace deepening, the senator allowed herself the most ungraceful of all movements: a full slump, leaning against the sturdy back.

                           relishing in how the relief stone bit through her thin gown into her spine, she let her head tip skyward.   this, this was something real, unlike every interaction since she opened her heavy lids this morning.   what was keeping her here?

                           obligation.

                           the same which kept the mantle of alderaan’s senator upon her shoulder, which led some tens of thousands of beings to still declare her princess even though nothing of their world remained.   the role which made her so attractive a candidate to the queen mother.   what could be more prestigious a match than to an heir presumptive who could never have total loyalty to their throne… because their throne no longer existed.

                           the faint brush of a mind against her expanded senses functioned like a fly caught on a spider’s web, leia straightening, composing herself into something merely mildly tired in a heartbeat.   just in time for one of the hapan courtiers to round the grassy bend.   out of no obligation to rise, the hint of a smile faded onto her lips, easily cloaking herself in sheepish chagrin.

𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐕𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐂𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄, coruscant was everything but. rain expected more from the pliant heart of every galactic regime that’d come before this newest of republics. millennia tall duracrete constructs without a touch of artistry disfigured an otherwise jewel-colored sky. blaring neon adverts soliciting everything from holodramas to suggestive delights accosted peripherals on every side street and thoroughfare. a city of automated aesthetics; designed by organics and built by dreamless machines. a city a creature like the queen mother might appreciate if anything outside her own abysmal perfection could touch her basal standards.

      although thoroughly unimpressed, there were pockets that fell within the realm of beauty. like the garden rain sauntered through. an illusion of nature’s glory, manicured by . rain heard the rapacious song of life all around him. a choir fueled by crystalline blood through chlorophyll veins. yet amid the jungle of harmonized chaos, the trail he followed like an instinct remained untouched.

      for a woman who spent the better part of her still fresh adulthood absconding herself from imperial clutches, leia organa was not a difficult woman to find. her presence called to his magic like an echo’s drip, cascading in silence off the walls and across the open air. even without the spectral current drawing him through assemblage of imported flora, the courtier imagined he’d trace her steps with the same patent ease. if he’d been subjected to the queen mother’s ego in the way organa had, he too would flee to a sanctuary inhabited by a merciful lack of mouths.

      ❝ you’ll find a hapan’s sense of time depends on her mood. ❞ his face was entirely obscured save his eyes beneath rich hues of violet and pale pelagic blues, but the upward turn of his voice was a clear companion to a smile delivering the jab.

      with a click of wood against the path, rain planted himself before a column a respectful distance from alderaan’s heir. vines like threads of jewels encircled the pillar he’d chosen as his post. at the end of each spreading limb was a heart-shaped leaf accompanied by a pair of delicate buds: one a dawn-soaked magenta, the other a twilight periwinkle. rain recognised them as totally innocuous in their natural state, but when crushed and combined with certain . . . obscure components, the wispy aroma that bloomed from their hearts became a nerve-crippling gas.

𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐆𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐀 𝐕𝐈𝐑𝐓𝐔𝐄. when it understood the merits of caution. a tactician, a soldier, a survivor. even a hero — for a tragically brief spell. titles rain couldn’t claim if he played games he wouldn’t win. which is why argus’ bastard strutted along an invisible border. close enough to gloat an undeniable presence to the cryomancer while maintaining enough distance to keep a tactful eye on winter’s lethal reach.

      ❝ in your experience, ❞ wisps of water materialized from smaller particles of moisture dispersed through air. they solidified into a rippling globe that spun on an axis on the palm of rain’s hand. in an instant, the orb was crushed. cascades slipped through rain’s fingers in tear-shaped patterns. stains the color of night-colored blood pitter-pattered on dark stones only to be sucked back into the air, leaving the ground bone dry. as time was in retreat, scattered drops returned to rain’s hand forming again the orb as pristine as the first.

The bewildered half-insult gets a solemn nod from Aaron as he low-effort feigns empathy for Rains confusion. He's aware his vernacular can be at times difficult to parse for those unfamiliar, but the other's arrogance gives this miscommunication a more sour note than usual. Still, Aaron is nothing if not...accommodating.

"Oh, my bad; my pompous asshole's a lil rusty, but lemme see if I can translate."

He steps forward without hesitation or trepidation, stopping just in front of Rain as he locks eyes. His next words lack their signature even keel, and instead carry an uncharacteristic gravity.

"To this moment, your supposed power and superiority over me have been naught but words flimsy as clouds with a drizzle of unearned and untested hubris behind them. Unless you are prepared to test your assumptions of my worthiness or lack thereof in kombat immediately, you would be better off retaining the moisture so as not to further vex me with your pointless prattling."

He held his gaze for a few beats before letting the hardness fall away from his face and resuming his usual demeanor.

"Or somethin' like that."
