[9/9] CHINESE GODS AND GODDESSES | PAN JINLIAN

Pan Jinlian [潘金蓮] is a protagonist in the Chinese classic novel Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase), and a minor character in the Water Margin, another classic. A well-known figure in Chinese culture, she represents the quintessential adulterous wife, and has become the patron goddess of brothels and prostitutes.

Pan Jinlian was the wife of Wu Dalang, whose younger brother, Wu Song, eventually became one of the major marsh rebels and a most memorable hero. While Wu Song was a handsome, stout and tall young man, Wu Dalong was an unsightly dwarf, making a living by peddling bread. Pan Jinlian, young, beautiful and graceful, was always jeered by neighbors as “a flower planted in a cow’s dung.”

Pan, dissatisfied with her marriage, has an extramarital affair with Ximen Qing, a handsome womanizer in town. Wu Dalang learns of the affair, but Pan and Ximen murder him by adding poison to his food. They bribe the coroner to conceal the true cause of his death. Wu Song grows suspicious of his brother’s death and carries out his own investigations to eventually discover the truth. Wu Song takes the law into his own hands in revenging his brother after his failure to bring the case to a corrupt court: he slays Pan Jinlian and her lover.

Mythology | Egyptian Goddesses

In the Egyptian predynastic period, Neith was known as the goddess of hunting, though her realm of influence also encompassed war and weaving of fine cloths. She is one of the earliest worshiped Egyptian deities and was hailed as the wise Mother of gods. She was often depicted carrying a crossed bow and arrow and wearing the blood red crown representing lower Egypt. 

Nephthys was a night goddess and protector of the dead, also representing decay and invisibility. She offered spirits safe passage through multiple realms of the afterlife and provided comfort to mourning families. She was symbolized as a woman with a basket set atop her head (an emblem often inscribed upon coffins), and her alternate form was a hawk with outstretched, protective wings. 

Hathor was the sky goddess of love, beauty, music, and dance, with additional influence upon the sun and moon. It is thought that all Egyptian goddesses were initially some form of her. Her symbol is the sistrum (a percussive instrument), and she often materialized as a woman with a starry cow’s head, or a full woman with a moon-shaped headdress. 

The solar Sekhmet was a warrior goddess of fire, vengeance, and war. She protected the pharaohs of her land and guided them into fierce battles, striking enemies down with arrows dipped in fire. She was referred to as the Scarlet Lady because of her nearly unquenchable bloodlust. She appears as a woman with a wild, powerful lion’s head, and many believed that her breath created the desert.

Lilith // לִילִית‎ Lîlîṯ is the name for a figure in Jewish mythology, developed earliest in the Babylonian Talmud, who is generally thought to be in part derived from a historically far earlier class of female demons Līlīṯu (the mistress of winds and night) in Babylonia. She’s better known as the first wife of Adam, before Eve or the lover of Lucifer.

Her will of never being subdued to any man or authority, made her an icon of feminine power and freedom and caused her to be cast away from Heaven, although without losing her immortality. After that, she became the first among the demons in both power and savagery.
