"On second thought,â Dendera turned to the nearest journalist bombarding them, âShove off and stop harassing us.â She told the man, following her teammate and muttering, âThe invasive assholes.â
ââ Adele knew that she hadnât been the best to some of her TEAMMATES over their career at school ( in fact, if she really tried she could recall a time when she was horrible to each and every one of them ), so when she realized that the competition meant working with them, she was set to make some sort of amends. âThat we are, congratulations, Yaxley. Dendera Yaxley, right?? Weâll be the best team there, Iâm sure of it.â
Dendera looked over to see a familiar face. Though familiar, it did not bring any comfortable feelings to Dendera. In fact, the effect was quite opposite. âRight.â She said, a bit stiffly. âYouâre Rosier.â Dendera cracked her neck from side to side willing herself to be civil. âOf course. Looking around at the other teams it seems to me we have the best on our side.â
âIâm sure itâs a highlight to showcase what weâre all capable of,â Kamaria agreed kindly, evenly. After all, each school had its own specialty.  âAnd I certainly donât want to lose either.â The incentive was too high â she really wanted that internship. âBut we may have a better time of it if we see it as less of a sport.â She was certainly banking on the hope that it wouldnât be too physical anyway.
Dendera pondered this for a moment, âThatâs a very nice way to think about it.â She said in a neutral tone, taking a swig of her drink. âOf course not. Of course not. No one does.â She waved her hand in the hair dismissively. âI do hope it doesnât involve any sort of dueling shenanigans, though admittedly I would excel purely with the element of surprise, but alas,â She sighed, âIt sounds like a lot of work.â
Her stomach churning, Kamaria couldnât decide if she was excited or nauseous over her selection to represent Castelobruxo. The pressure was surmounting. âIsnât this supposed to be a friendly competition?â Her face eased into a smile. âI do wish you luck though. Iâm interested to see what kind of tasks that they will set for us.â The anxiety over not knowing left her wondering if she would just wind up making a fool of herself, but she had to walk into this by stepping her best foot forward.
âOh please,â Dendera laughed a bit, âthatâs utter hogwash. This competition is for schools to show off under the guise of âinternational magical co operationââ she made air quotes with her fingers. She wasnât  particularly nervous about competing. However, she did care about her team winning. âI regret that I canât return the luck. See, Iâm quite competitive.â She smirked. âWell.. I do have a distinct feeling that this wonât be a fun game.â
nadiaâs eyes slid over to dendera, betraying no surprise at her own name being called (who was better qualified for this than her?), and none of the real surprise she felt at dendera being selected. this was a team, after all .âtheyâll learn, yaxley. letâs be charitable and allow them to feel overconfident while they can.â
Dendera looked at the other girl and let out a small laugh. âCharitable is unfortunately not part of my vocabulary.â She let a smirk find itâs way back onto her face. âHonestly, though, look around, there isnât a better school team than ours.â
Denderaâs head shot up in surprise at her name being called, as she didnât honestly think sheâd be chosen to represent her house. She wasnât sure her abilities were particularly useful enough to land her a spot on the team. She quickly schooled her features into a smirk and looked around her, âGet ready for the Maladh team to kick all your asses.â
Cameron leaned back against his, interested and listening, Slowly, his hands lifted and his fingers laced together behind his head. âWow.â He smiled genuinely, trying to imagine a class on magical theory. âItâs completely different for us. I donât think Iâve ever had a magical theory class in my life. Weâre all about practical magic â offence, defence, healing â that kind of thing. Thereâs a lot of pressure on us to experiment with spells and make them our own. Thatâs another thing we donât have: Divination.â He paused, a nervous edge curving into his smile. âSo you can see the future, right?â
Dendera was a bit shocked at the fact that he had never taken a magic theory class. She supposed she could see why it wasnât taught in all schools, though. Itâs not exactly the most useful branch of magic. Unless you find showing off useful. She looked at him, eyebrows raising. âYou experiment with spells? Isnât that bit dangerous?â The smallest of grins found itâs way to her lips. âAh. Youâre asking if Iâm a seer? I donât make prophecies or anything but I do some mean palm reading and crystal gazing. If you count that as seeing the future, then sure, I can.â
Cameron raised his eyebrows, but said nothing, opening his book and flipping through to the right page. âHm?â He looked up. âOh, not too much. We donât focus a whole lot on that. I mean, I might be able to lift that book if I tried hard enough. Is that a big thing at Maladh?â
âWe capitalize on magical theory from day one.â She told him, shifting in her spot to face him a bit more. She was always eager to talk about magic. âItâs easier to do wandless and nonverbal magic when you understand whatâs behind it. The mechanics.â She splayed out her hand in his direction, willing his hair to push into his face with a small smirk. âItâs what Iâm good at. Besides Divination.â She muttered the last part, not overly proud with it, looking back to her book.
âI know you donât.â Cameron frowned. âI was jusâ trying to be polite.â He shot her an odd look, but sat down, pulling out his books as he did. âThatâs a cool trick,â he nodded towards the summoned book, trying to get some sort of reaction out of her that didnât seem like disinterest.
âHow kind.â She said, again with indifference, flipping through her book, realizing now that it was on palmistry. âWandless magic.â She looked over to him. âCan you do any?â
âSorry â sorry, I didnât mean to make you jump.â Cameron extended a hand, paused, and ran in quick through his mess of hair. âI was, um, wondering if the seat next to you was free. Not many quiet places these days, just looking for a place to do some work.â He was rambling, he realised, and quickly cut himself off, offering a small smile instead.
She cleared her throat, looking at the unfamiliar boy in front of her. She nodded slightly, âSure, do as you please. I donât own the place.â She said, indifferently, sticking her open palm up in the air and summoning a book to her without a peep, cracking it open to a random page and pretending to read.Â
Dendera looked out, down on the beaches of the Atlantas Palm. Her squishy armchair, nestled in the corner of a secluded spot in the library, had quite a good view of it out of a large window. She was quite familiar with this view, as she had seen it everyday for the past few years. Though she rarely had the energy to read, Dendera liked sitting in this spot, in quiet seclusion. However, this quietness was broken by a sudden voice making her jump.
