Fun family story: when my aunt was marrying her wife everyone was really excited but also dreading it because my aunt is known for her insanely long speeches so everyone knew her vows would be like 9 hours long so when it came time for her to say her vows she had a shit ton of cue cards in her hands and even her wife started groaning and my aunt took a deep inhale and then unravelled all the cue cards which were taped together and they all just read ‘HOT DAMN’ in giant letters and those were my aunts vows.

When I saw your face today, when I spoke…I’ve tried to deny it, but I just can’t make myself stop.

This is Clemence Romanis, a major character in the last episode of The Paradise that aired on Sunday. She’s a very intelligent and forward thinking woman who uses her femininity and her powers of seduction in order to make her way in the world of business, because this is like 1876 and she knows what’s up. Fun fact: she’s also a lesbian, and her “heartbreak growing up in Paris” was because she loved a woman who wanted to live a “proper” life. Isn’t it just grand how her character description fails to mention that?
It’s technically a spoiler which might be why.
Yes, but I feel that anyone who had enough knowledge to want to look her up would already know that.
I understand your point but I disagree. It’s the main feature of two episodes and knowing it before you should in the narrative does spoil it.
Two?….I’m assuming you’ve managed to see the entire series somehow. I haven’t. Well, I certainly understand how horribly upsetting spoilers can be, and I wholeheartedly appreciate websites who are cautious about them. I’m merely saying that most character biographies I have seen around several websites talk about the entirety of a character, including potential spoilers. So I was initially surprised and angry that it was left out. No harm done.
I’m from the UK and season 2 aired this time last year so yeah. I haven’t spoiled much I’m sorry if I did but yeah she does reappear and it’s then you find out as a viewer.
It’s quite alright! I’m glad to know I’ll be seeing her again.
What episode are you up to?

Everyone that borrowed my DVDs left notes in the front.

Yesterday my boss and I were talking about period dramas and she recommended The Paradise to me. Does anyone watch it or know if it closely follows Emile Zola’s novel? I’m debating just watching it or buying The Ladies’ Paradise and reading it first. I’ve never read anything by Zola either so any recommendations on where to start would be fabulous!
The series is amazing. Do both but i would say watch first!
So I got into this show, The Paradise, on Netflix and absolutely LOVED it!!! I was hooked. Stayed up until 5am watching the first season haha I come to find out BBC announced back in February they were canceling the show because it wasn’t getting enough viewers 😣😩😭 So sad there’s only two seasons. I finished the last season the other day; I wish there was more romance, but the season was still good. I’m glad there weren’t really any cliff hangers at the end, but there is still more they could do for a third season 😢 Man, so bummed this series didn’t last. Loved the characters, scenery, humor and romance!
Definitely watch this BBC series! First season is on Netflix! Apparently, they are showing the second season on PBS every Sunday right now.
It wasn't viewing figures because it did good over here. They never said definitively but i think it was budget
Sarah Lancashire as Miss Audrey in The Paradise
Guys…. the more of this I watch, the more I keep wanting to write a fanfic in which she’s seduced by a young, stubborn, pain-in the-arse new shop girl named Sarah O’Brien ;-)
Even Miss Audrey deserves a little fun from time to time…
do it please i'll heart you forever
