Looking for a place to shop or eat in Istanbul? Or perhaps you would like to make a change in your daily routine and do gallery hopping to see some art. Would it not be great to have some more information than what a regular guide can provide? Perhaps it would be even better if there was something that could set in motion your intuitions about a certain place or space.
notonlyistanbul is a video guide for urban living for those Istanbulites and visitors who look for that ‘extra’ genuine thing in a guide. Besides notonlyistanbul offers more than just a guide; one could use it as a guide as well as share her/his impressions on Istanbul with others on its platform.
Gizem Elçi and Deniz Gül are the two co-founders of this most original and novel guide for Istanbul. Deniz Gül is a visual artist and designer whose works have been displayed in various museums and art centres including CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Palais des Beaux Artes Lille, Centre De Cultura Contemporania Barcelona and ARTER Istanbul. Gizem Elçi writes and directs short films that have been shown at different festivals. Her short film shot in 2009 has won the Best Short Film award at the International Golden Boll Film Festival. Here we interviewed them about their mutual child notonlyistanbul.

How did you come up with the idea of founding “notonlyistanbul, video guide for urban living”?
When creating notonlyistanbul, we were not only trying to answer the need for a city guide, but also wanted the contribution of the people of Istanbul, and Istanbul lovers, to create a city archive together. Hence, we wanted to create content that focused on all aspects of Istanbul as it is. Why we chose video as our main medium was because rather than written or photographed material it seemed a more honest reflection of media. We believe that the atmosphere of a place and the energy of the people can seem much more genuine through film.
