one hint that the very good beach boys song about friendship was probably fictional is the look on the boys’ faces on the cover of this low-budget european compilation, which i assume was barred from using one of the regular capitol records cover shots and had to rely on candid photography in which al jardine’s expression of bemused mid-sentence disgust is outdone only by brian wilson’s paranoid pre-cigarette frown. at least the lamp shade looks happy.
