the decision for this edit to have a vhs effect on it was specifically to pay homage to the stylized original music video for closer while keeping true to sunny's grungy low-fidelity beginnings. even though the show starts in the aughts (and was never released on VHS), dennis himself can't move beyond the 90s, beyond the sex tapes he makes; in many ways his own utilization of sex is itself a worn out vhs tape, with dennis defaulting back to replaying it over and over, using it to get away from himself by reenacting it, sharing it with inflicting it on women. the degradation of the tape and the loop of the (more or less identical) sex scenes was meant to evoke just that. this is the one thing that he believes works. getting back at women who have wronged him by preying on women who have not and can not. and this specific approach to sex is a form of self harm for him that is slowly but surely losing its potency and has begun to leave him feeling not just unsatisfied but also profoundly empty.
