ugh sorry but this anon PMO. i love history and learning and fun fact i actually wrote a paper on the history of puerto rico for AP us history so PLEASE anon listen when i say and this is exactly why people say puerto rican instead of just saying american because it’s not that simple!! PR is so beautiful & complex and needs its history KNOWN!!!

like puerto rico didn’t just “become american” in some fair mutual way. the u.s. took it from spain in 1898 after the spanish american war and just kept it. it’s still a territory, not a state, which is basically a “polite” way of saying it belongs to the u.s. but doesn’t get treated like it…

people born there got u.s. citizenship in 1917 but they still can’t vote for president if they live on the island and they don’t have full voting representation in congress. so calling them “just american” like it’s the same thing ignores the fact that they literally don’t have the same rights and culturally it’s not the same either. puerto rico has its own identity, language, and history that existed long before the u.s. showed up and never went away. it’s caribbean and latino, not interchangeable with mainland american identity, and acting like it is just flattens all of that!!! they have their own identity!!!!!!!

and the way the u.s. treats puerto rico is exactly why people don’t just go “oh yeah they’re american” and leave it at that. like look at d*nald trump (blergh maga stay away from me after you read this and learn some shit) and how he handled hurricane maria!!!!! thousands of people died, the island was without power for months, and the response was slow and dragged out while funding got held up behind extra things that other places didn’t have to deal with!!! PR was one of the only areas to deal with waiting for so long!!!! this is also the same person who threw paper towels into a crowd like it was a game, talked about puerto rico like it was disposable, and even wanted to trade it away. people in his own administration straight up said the mindset was basically “these aren’t my people” and now you’ve got people at his rallies calling puerto rico a “floating island of garbage” and pretending it’s just a joke like that isn’t coming from the exact same attitude

so yeah technically puerto ricans are u.s. citizens. but acting like they must be called american means their identity is just “american” ignores the colonial history, the unequal treatment, and the fact that a lot of puerto ricans don’t even primarily identify that way in the first place!! so calling someone puerto rican isn’t separating them, it’s literally just being accurate and not erasing everything that makes puerto rico puerto rico

Of course, there you were. A sweet smile on your face while your twins sat beside you. If you were to ask Dennis, he was blessed. Blessed to have you as his next door neighbor growing up, and most definitely blessed that you gave him the opportunity to be a father to your beautiful children. Boy-girl twins aren’t rare at all, but in both of your families it was seen as a miracle since it was the first.

“Hi baby, what’s happening?” He asks you, angling his phone so you could see his face.

“Denny, look what our babies can do!” You moved the phone to get closer to them. In the back, he heard you tell them, “just like we practiced for daddy!”

Isabella was the first to smile, clapping her chubby four year old hands together and start singing a familiar song, Johnathan copying his sister soon after she starts.

“Wow, so cool!” He gushed into the mic, staring at his babies attempt to keep a steady rhythm (and failing). “What song is that?”

“You can’t tell?” You moved the camera back to your face, your smile replaced with a big pout. “It played at our wedding!”

Dennis nodded, taking a second to think before he realized. The Cup Song. Such a throwback which he wouldn’t have chosen specifically, but his brothers had managed to convince you to play it saying it was Dennis’ favorite song (and you who loved pitch perfect in its entirety, decided to believe them). “Anna Kendrick,” was all he responded watching as you moved the phone to show plastic cups on the table.

“We’re not close with the cups yet, they keep trying to stack them.”

He lets out a laugh. He enjoys moments like these. Moments where in the midst of chaos, he knew you were his anchor and your children were the chain.

“Hows baby number three?” His smile never left, even when you groaned and rolled your eyes.

“His favorite spot to lay today is on my bladder, I had to go like twelve times in two minutes!” You complained, the pout coming back as you panned the camera to your, very big, stomach.

Dennis didn’t like to stop, nor did he want to. He’d get you pregnant for the rest of your lives if it meant seeing you like that.

Before he could say something else, the door opened to the locker room. “Hey, we need help here.” It was Trinity, a questioning look on her face when she saw him obviously on a FaceTime with someone.

He nods at her real quick before turning back to the phone, “okay I gotta go, see you at dinner. Love you.”

“Bye Dennie — guys, say bye to daddy.”

Dennis smiled when the twins repeated your statements, telling him that they loved him and can’t wait for him to get home. He hung up soon after, following Trinity back to the Pitt.

“Who was that on the phone?” She asked him, eyebrows wiggling while she gloved up.

“My wife and my kids,” he answered her truthfully, seeing no shame in denying it.

Trinity stopped and stared, her head tilting in every direction every so often as if to say he was crazy. “You’re married?”

“Yes?”

“And you went to medical school?”

“Yes…?”

Trinity sighed, looking at him as if to see if he was lying. “When?”

“When I was like seventeen.”

“Is that even legal?!” Her raised voice brought the attention of the others, including Dr. Robby who came to see what the fuss was about.

“What are you talking about?” He put the pen in his jacket pocket, adjusting his glasses as if it could fill him in.

“Whitaker has a wife! And a kid!”

“Three kids,” he corrected.

“Three?!”
