Examples of Godmodding and How to Avoid Doing Them
Godmodding - Acting without limits. One example of godmodding is: Powerplaying - Taking control of another person's character during a roleplay
Muse - The character you roleplay as, whether it is canon or OC
Mun - That is you. :)
- Each of us chooses our muses for a reason. We like that character (canon or OC) and we want to talk in their 'voice'. We want to see how they would react in certain scenarios. We want them to grow and to have some character development.
"Hey, we're all just writing! I write differently from others, so why should I care about godmodding?" First, let's start by explaining what godmodding is.
Why do people hate godmodding?
- Taking control of another person's muse is not a nice thing to do. It is your partner's muse, not yours. It is not up to you to decide what will happen to them. Note that godmodding can come in big or small words or actions, and some may not be aware that they are doing it.
4. On hurting/killing your partner's muse:
Example: "His blade swung forward, meeting her arm and slicing through the skin. It was a deep wound and blood didn't stop flowing."
Why it's considered godmodding: Without talking first with the mun, you are once again dictating what happens to their muse. In roleplaying fight scenes, it's hard not to godmod, consciously or not, so make sure that you talk about the mun about what happens.
How to change this: (1) Ask permission from the mun if you can hurt their character, (2) Ask permission from the mun if you can kill their character, (3) Try not to describe the wounds they get too thoroughly. Let them work on that to give them some breathing room.
Example: "His blade swung forward, and he thought it met her arm. Was that a wound on her arm? He couldn't be sure, as he was preparing to defend himself."
To this the mun can respond with something like: "He had hurt her, alright. The cut his blade inflicted let blood flow freely from her..."
5. Force-shipping
This doesn't necessarily have to happen in a thread. Your ships are yours to decide, but if you're shipping your character with a fellow rp-er's muse, you need to respect their stand on the matter.
Shipping is fun, but don't force someone else's muse to go all romantic on yours. Ask them first if it is okay to ship with them. This is unless you are swinging for the heartbreaking one-way ship, where your muse has feelings for someone's muse while that muse does not have the same feelings. In this case, ship away! But it would still be nice if you could let the object of your muse's feelings know about it. Who knows, maybe their muse feels the same way? And if they don't, don't force them into it.
Pay attention to what your rp-partner is trying to tell you in their muse's words or in the tags. They might not be comfortable with what you're doing and are trying to tell you to stop.
6. Relationships with the same muse but from different muns:
Let's say that your muse A has a brotp kind of relationship with muse B from person 1. This does not mean that you can approach person 2 expecting that they will give you the same brotp relationship from their muse that is the same as muse B's.
Having a romantic ship with person 3's muse C does not automatically give you a romantic ship with person 4's muse C even if they are the same character. Remember, one mun's approach is different from another's, and even if they share the same canon ships, that doesn't mean that they can be forced into a relationship without their say.
How to change this: (1) Ask them before approaching.
7. Talking for your RP partner:
In a thread, you and your rp partner take turns. In each turn your muse may speak one or more lines and do so many things. However, you cannot skip your rp partner's turn and speak for them, even if it's obvious what they are going to say.
Example: (If you write something like this)
Kyle asked for some coffee. "Can I have some?"
"Sure," Annie replied with a nod, and Kyle got himself some coffee.
Kyle then spoke: "Man, this coffee is wicked."
How to change it: If you are Kyle's mun, stick with what Kyle says. Don't make Annie say anything, unless there is permission from Annie's mun.
Example:
Kyle asked for some coffee. "Can I have some?" He then waited for Annie's reply.
Or, if your Kyle is of the more headstrong character,
Kyle asked for some coffee. "Can I have some?" He asked, even though he was already getting some for himself without waiting for Annie's permission.
That's all I can think of right now, and if anyone would like to reblog and add to this, feel free to do so. There are so many different ways that you may be godmodding, and knowing about them will help you improve.
Remember, intentional or unintentional godmodding is not okay. People may stop roleplaying with you if you continue godmodding. Not everyone will be nice enough to tell you about what you're doing wrong. Some will just simply drop your thread if they feel that they are not being respected. If you want to continue roleplaying, make sure that you respect your RP partners.
