(Applying Primarily to Classic) The Clara/Saburov stuff is like, so grueling and agonizing to experience in Classic. It seems like Clara’s parents primarily functioned as two opposing sides of an Iron Maiden, closing in and suffocating her. Both of Clara’s “fathers” being Block and Saburov illustrates this idea of her being a soldier, a virtuous and diligent judge. (I mean, both their first names being Alexander isn’t just a coincidence). She even describes Saburov equating him to a military general after he agrees to adopt her.

So much about Pathologic is about the horror of growing up.

And for Clara, it’s primarily the suffocation of her mother and father enforcing their dichotomous beliefs onto her, literally from birth. That’s why she is ultimately born to grow to be a mistress. A woman who is doomed to one path.

Through their love, she inherited the trauma of her mother yearning to be a proper mistress, and the stress of her father carrying the entire town on his back.

In Pathologic, to be a daughter is to be a xerox of your mother, and an agent of your father. But they do love her. Through everything, the most tragic part is they loved her from the very beginning, Saburov trusted her from the moment he saw her after all. Maybe the cruelty is just an inevitability when born out of the family unit. Who knows
