Waste No More

“75% of waste that ends up in the garbage is in fact food.”
What I Did Branding, Environmental Design, Illustrations, UI UX, Copy Writing
Challenge Working for years in the restaurant industry I have seen first-hand how much food is thrown away. Research shows that 75% of waste that ends up in the garbage is in fact food. I have always thought there must be a better way. After meeting with local businesses I discovered that more often than not owners feel they compromise their environmental responsibilities to be more efficient.
Moreover, food ends up in the landfill and breaks down into methane which is 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide. In effect the food and beverage industry is significantly contributing to the climate crisis. I want to change that.
Approach I looked at the broken system and it is clear that the current waste management system is not working for the food and beverage industry. There is a need for a new way to disperse and dispose of both edible and non-edible food.
However, project Waste No More is more than a waste disposal/management system, it’s a way of life. We need to change the way we look at food and help business utilize their waste in a more effective, efficient and beneficial way.
First I needed branding, the face for my idea. The logo was inspired by the recycling symbol, the idea that all food waste can be a part of one continuous cycle. This was a paired with a  warm, professional yet eye catching colour palette.
The inhouse signage, a infographic poster and an informational brochure were next. Even though these deliverables would most likely live in the back of house it was important that they have a professional and adaptive look. It’s during this process that I decided to draw 20 different types of half eaten food items on procreate to make a fun and multifunctional pattern.
The last step was to design an app that would function as the middle man (or woman) in the distribution process. I wanted the user experience to be as easy and streamline as possible, leaving little to no room for confusion. The app is divided into two main sections: Project Leftovers and Project Compost.
Project Leftovers is a program that takes all edible food out of the garbage. Food will be logged into the app were people in need can order and pick up food free of charge. This will eliminate edible food being thrown away due to mistakes and end of service throw-a-ways.
The compost system will allow businesses to connect with local members of their community that are in need of compost. By utilizing a compost system businesses can use their own compost for gardening around their properties and ultimately cut down on what goes into the garbage.

Challenge  (indicate picture and caption) (pull quote – “3 different port cities have come together to feed the hungry and promote local acts”)
Despite working 60 hour work weeks a group of dedicated lawyers and business professionals from 3 different port cities have come together to feed the hungry and promote local acts of kindness. These busy volunteers find time to make a difference for those in need. Inspired by their dedication I designed an iconic logo to capture their mission.
Approach (indicate picture and caption) (pull quote – “two clasping hands in an organic line drawing to represent the human connection”)
For this logo I illustrated two clasping hands in an organic line drawing to represent the human connection. Â I also used nature elements to reflect their natural surroundings. A clean contemporary san serif keeps the logo readable at different scales while full colour, monochrome or black and white versions work for different applications.

The city of Nanaimo also known as the harbor city is home to 100,000 people and is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Like many cities it faces challenges of growth and expansion. This has resulted in a wave of new shops and restaurants opening all over the city, thus taking away business from the downtown core.
The goal of this project was to revitalize the heart of our city through the design and implementation of a strong wayfinding system. My design choices were fueled by the hope of creating a space that is warmth and family friendly.
Approach (indicate picture and caption)
Nanaimo is known for having a stunning backdrop of Mount Benson, a 1,023m tall mountain that sits in the middle of our city. I let the elements from our lush green forests influence my logo design and branding. Rooftop green spaces and green walls to be installed throughout the downtown centre, creating a dreamy atmosphere. Solar powered string lights would also be installed throughout the narrow streets to add ambience and promote safety at night.
Each district is defined by a colour coding system shown on light poles, bike racks and waste bins. Three solar powered information stations would be installed, which include an interactive map with unique icons, a directory of shops and restaurants and a QR code link to a mobile app. The stations include a help button to connect to local authorities if needed.

Millions of Canadians claim to be mortgage poor; and a third of Canadians spend more than 50% of their income on housing. I recognize that not every homeowner has the ability to rent a room or have the extra income to purchase that secondary property to rent out. As a previous homeowner myself I understand the financially stress and toll that it can have on a family. I want homeowners to feel impowered by their investment not burdened by it. I created this app so that homeowners can make the most of their properties and hopefully get a little ahead financially. Â
Approach (indicate picture and caption)
With a similar business model to Airbnb, my app connects homeowners to people in search of an affordable place to set up camp or enjoy a glamping experience. I have gone to a couple music festivals in my life and one thing that always seems to be an issue is the cost and lack of options for accommodation. Either hotel rates go up by 50%, campsites are full and noisy or everything is sold out. This app opens up the field of accommodation even further. I kept my design for this app clean and modern looking, with easy to use navigation. I wanted the focus to be on the properties and what the homeowner is offering so I didn’t overcomplicate the design.

Success Statement
Restaurant owners and employees will be better educated and supported regarding the environmental impact food waste has on the industry and our planet. An imbalance between our duty to the environment, cost to owner and productivity of employees will cease to exist.
Goal
There is an excessive amount of food waste with in the food and beverage industry. Around 75% of waste that ends up in the garbage is in fact food. When we improperly dispose of food and it ends up in the landfill, it breaks down and creates methane gas. Methane is a type of greenhouse gas that is 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide, affecting the temperature of the earth and our climate systems.
After working in the industry for the last eight years I have seen first-hand how much is actually wasted and I have always thought that there must be a better way. However, restaurants run on efficiency and unfortunately that can lead to shortcuts. More often than not, business owners have to compromise their environment beliefs and responsibilities to be more efficient. These businesses shouldn’t feel conflicted about this choice, so I plan to change that.
Client
This project is aimed at the people that own and run the food and beverage industry. Restaurants employ people of all ages, genders, races and ethnicities: my target audience is everyone. I will also be targeting the people that will be beneficially affected by this program. This includes but is not limited to the homeless community, people of a lower income and people that are simply in need of a meal. The composting component of my project will include people that are in need of compost; farmers, landscapers and waste disposal companies.
Success
Success with this project would mean a reinvention of how the industry disposes of waste. By bringing awareness to this issue it opens up the table for conversation and discussion, which in turn educates and encourages businesses. I want this program to show this industry that they can do their environmental part with little to no impact on their business. Even if every second business implemented one of the components of this program we would be reducing the waste that ends up in landfills.
Outcome
Project Waste No More is a waste disposal system that allows business to utilize their waste in a more effective, efficient and beneficial way. The app will be used to help distribute edible and non-edible waste by connecting restaurants with members in their community.

Artez Pricing List
Who else needs a personalized price list?
Challenge
A new way to display the prices and services that Artez Photography provides.
They needed a design that correctly represented the fun, interesting and professional business that they are.
Approach
The majority of their clientele are realtors and other businesses wishing to promote their business. These people have tight and busy schedules , information needs to be clear and easy to access.
What I did
To create a visually engaging interactive price list that would be given to each client in a PDF format.
The client wanted the pricing list to have the feeling of a magazine. I used a combination of their photography and text to create various layouts that showcase their work as well as communicating their prices.
Due to the pages individuality there seemed to be a lack of cohesiveness. To remedy the issue I used a consistent style of typography and used the same application to header and footer on each page. By doing this I was able to meet the client’s needs for individuality as well as creating a cohesive pricing list package.

Bridge the Gap
Bridge that gap
The Challenge
A new identity is needed to support the work of a non-profit organization that feeds homeless people.
Bridging the gap between the marginalized
The Approach
As a volunteer business community working as a team to help the homeless the design needed to express a sense of connectivity.
After a 60 hour workweek, these volunteers still find time to help. This insight inspired the need for a simple iconic logo—something they could take pride it.
What I did
I designed a logo that captures the essence of their work while also keeping it simple and recognizable.
This logo will be used for t-shirts, tote bags, hats, banners, business cards and everything in between. So, it was important that the logo allowed the client to have colour versatility; using either full colour, monochrome or black and white versions.

Finding your way through Benson’s Mist
The Challenge
A new take on a warm, young and family friendly downtown to visit. With this new design we want to encourage tourists as well as our locals to explore downtown Nanaimo. We have three downtown districts; each equally worth visiting but sometimes missed. Our goal is to revitalize the heart of our city, making it a place you wish to spend time at and ensuring that you take advantage of all three of our downtown districts.
The Approach
Nanaimo struggles with the current state in which the downtown core is looking, many do not find it welcoming or safe.
Safety was taken into consideration with each design element.
With Mount Benson at our gates we want to bring our lush green forests to the core of our downtown hub. Being that we are an environmentally conscious city, our priority is to preserve our beautiful island and all that it has to offer.
What I did
I was inspired by the cities natural backdrop, Mount Benson, when designing this logo. The logo needed to be versatile because I used the logomark as a wayfinding tool throughout the city centre.
I created a wayfinding station that included an interactive map, help button and was designed to be solar powered. I created Covid social distancing marker
With our new plan, you will be able to easily distinguish between the lower, middle and upper districts with our new colour coding systems. Light poles and bins will be coloured accordingly to each district. We will also be incorporating a directional marker, these will keep you on a well thought out path to insure you make the most of your visit. Three information stations will be installed; which will include interactive maps of the district, a directory of shops and restaurants, a QR code that links you to the mobile app. The stations will also have a help button to connect you to authorities if you are in need of help.

Base Camp App
The ChallengeÂ
This school project was to create the UI for the business that I created.
An app that helps you to connect to people with land or yards for you to camp on; similar to Airbnb but for your outdoor property.
I designed a business that allows property owns to make some extra income off their unused yard.
The Approach
Millions of Canadians claim to be mortgage poor; and a third of Canadians spend more that 50% of their income on housing.
Not every homeowner has the ability to rent a room or have the extra income purchase that second property to rent out. I want homeowners to make the most of their properties, so I make a space for them to do just that.
I personally have gone to a few festivals and camping or getting a hotel nearby can be costly as well as chaotic. This app would allow home owners rent out their backyard for people to set up their tents for a couple of days. I am planning on going to a festival in June and I personally want to relax and wine down after a day full of activities. I really don’t want to pay $250+ a night for accommodation nearby or go to a noise campsite that everyone from the festival will be sleeping at.
What I did
I designed the interface for an app that was easy to navigate, aesthetically pleasing and focused on the properties listed.

A. Who are they? (use somewhere you dream about working). Include their name and a description of what they do. Include a link to their website
Loop is a creative agency that uses design to help social impact organizations address the world’s most pressing challenges.
https://weareloop.com
B. How are they a good fit for you? How do they align with your own personal and professional goals? What might you learn? How will you develop further as a designer?
My ideal workplace would be to work for a design agency whose clientele who have socially and environmentally responsible businesses. I would love to be a part of an agency like Loop because my drive and love for design stems from what they are going. I think working for a place like this would help me develop in all areas as an empathetic designer.
C. How are you a good fit for them? What skills and unique qualities do you bring to the table? As a human being and as a new designer.
I believe I would be a good fit for Loop because of how my interests of social justice and equality drive the majority of my designs already. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my career as a graphic design then creating change, support and bridging gaps in society.
D. What are you offering to them, specifically? (think about your value statement, your skills, your strengths, your characteristics).
As a human I’m empathetic, kind, logical, rational, intelligent, driven, creative and an inclusive thinker. I want to make a difference in my life and giving a voice to businesses, organizations, and volunteer programs that want the same would fulfill me in every way. I thrive when I’m inspired and surrounded by likeminded designers.
V1 – Design Thinking
ARTG 481 – Design Thinking  Blog Post 5
For this project we were asked to design a social shareable graphic that speaks to the design thinking process. My goal was to create a visually stimulating design that captures the attention of my audience.Â
I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone with my use of colour and overall design. I used this colour palette because it brings my back to when I was a kid; I had a notebook with this purple-blue colour (R=84 G=74 B=207) and it had loosely drawn flowers all over it. This was the start of my own personal creative path so I figured why not use it as a place to start for this project. I used “My 5″ as a slogan to show connection to the design process and to give it a bit of personality. My use of arrows are to show that the “linear process” isn't as restrictive as it’s been presented in the past. There is lots of room to go back and forth between the stages and always room for critique along the way.
Design & Thinking
ARTG 481 – Design Thinking  Blog Post 4
I really enjoyed seeing all the different ways that design is brought into every business. The video highlights that a lot of designers haven’t actually heard of design thinking and the ones that did had seem to have a very mechanical view on it. I think it’s important to note that many designers agreed that reducing the process of designs down to a formula has a negative impact on the value design possesses.
A reoccurring theme in this video was the way that businesses view design. Businesses know they need designers but, don’t necessary understand what to do with them. I think this is partially because we speak different languages. The corporate world speaks with data, spreadsheets, profit and loss statement, balance sheet and cash flows; whereas designers speak creatively. These business want results and aren’t use to the flow in which designers work. The term “Industrial Design” has been deemed the term to help label design within the business world. It’s nice to know that the corporate world is making room and placing higher value on designers in all areas of business.
Vince Voron, head of design for Coca-Cola in North America, is a really sweet guy. I adore his view on design and the way he made the choice to leave Apple for Coca-Cola. The main difference between the two iconic companies is that Coca-Cola focuses on the people’s love for their products; they’re thoughtful and empathetic with their design choices. Whereas, Apple has a love for their products not necessarily the people; they have not yet achieved a worldwide love like Coca-Cola has.
My last take away from the film was that a lot of established businesses don’t put a lot of time into inventing new ideas. They often put their focus on the products that already exist because, they feel a pressure to earn high returns on their existing business model. It’s the unfortunate side of becoming a successful business.

“Design Thinking is BS”, is BS
ARTG 481 – Design Thinking Blog Post 3
There are extremes to everything and I believe Natasha Jen’s speech came off a little brash, however her educated statements make for a good topic of conversation. Richard Banfield’s article in rebuttal to Jen speech honestly came across fairly rude. His article seemed defensive and driven with anger. Perhaps it’s because his books are in contradiction to what she is saying, well at least what he thinks she is saying. I really didn't enjoy the overall tone of this article because it felt like he was undermining the very established and successful Natasha Jen.
Buzz Words – Team Jen I stand by that buzz words will always almost be viewed as exclusive. Graphic design is an industry that is based around helping businesses communicate effectively with their customers. It seems a little counterproductive to give much effort into using a bunch of jargon. In general making the language we use accessible to everyone should be top priority.Â
There is No Criticism of Design Thinking – Team Jen Jen wasn't agreeing or trying to enforce that designers stand around a whiteboard of sticky notes, but to point out how search engines portray “design thinking”. Banfield’s makes it sound like she's be arrogant and naive, when he clearly didn't understand where she was going with that.Â
There is No “Crit” in Design Thinking – Team 3/4 Jen & 1/4 Banfield I do agree that truly objective crit is difficult to gather; you would need to conduct a focus group for each design. However, crit with in an office, with family and friends can in my opinion be objective. Everyone has their own background, history, story; which in turn has shaped them into the truly unique individual thinkers that they are.
Messy Evidence Is Proof of Creativity – Team Jen Again, Banfield takes her word so literary. Her use of wording “messy evidence” was not implying that you must live like a pig and be buried in sketches and ideas. Jen is saying that a lot of successful creatives like to surround themselves with inspiration/evidence; in whatever form that takes. Inspiration could look like a clean office space surrounded by plants, because when you’re sitting there you feel grounded and creative. It could take form in hanging bit of artwork on a pinboard with clipping of typography and beaded necklace that you just find beautiful. Whatever you chose is your choice and there is no right or wrong and subconsciously you have created some sort of version of messy evidence.
Illustration – A representation of what Richard Banfield perceives as messy evidence to be vs what Natasha Jen’s is actually meaning.

Design Thinking
ARTG 481 – Design Thinking Blog Post 2
Is design thinking bullshit? Natasha Jen, seems to think so, and I would have to agree with her. I don’t believe that design can be boiled down to what society has told us it is. The process of design is not linear nor a streamline, ridged 5 step process. Creativity doesn't come from 3M sticky-notes and cannot be measured or put into a calculated process.
The 5 Stages of Design Thinking (according to google)
Stage 1: Empathize—Research Your Users' Needs. Stage 2: Define—State Your Users' Needs and Problems. Stage 3: Ideate—Challenge Assumptions and Create Ideas. Stage 4: Prototype—Start to Create Solutions. Stage 5: Test—Try Your Solutions Out.
As Natasha points out, the process of critique is completely missed and I would have to say that cit is one of the most important steps. Working as a solo freelance designer I make a point to reach out to my classmates, family members, friends, and other designers. I do this because going over my work makes me a better designer. I know that things get missed, improvements can be made, and that your intent behind your designs can get lost. It’s important to catch these things before bringing the final product to the public, because if you don’t the negative implication can be great.Â
I believe that structure is important, because it can help you get going when you’re stuck and it can help get you back on track if you’ve gone into a rabbit hole. But, design should not be defined or outlined by the “5 Stages of Design Thinking”; that alone puts creatives in a box which isn't conducive to our process.Â

I really like the over all look of this website because its, clean, simplistic, dynamic, and something that I myself could actually design. The subtle details dedicated to the typography make a huge impact on the refinement of the website. The colour palette is neutral, which allows the work to not be overshadowed. The subtlety of the colour also brings out the typography and allows for some room to play with its colours. I also like that they use photography and a couple animations; this adds complexity and helps with engagement.
Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation
ARTG 481 – Design Thinking Blog Post 1
Thomas Edison is a pioneer of trial and error, “the 99% perspiration”, and he wanted others to learn from each iterative stab. I feel like my design career has and will continue to be like this, constantly learning from mistakes, thus making every project experience better from the last . Like Edison designers should build a career that blends art, craft, science, business savvy and have an understanding of their customers and market.
Design before the latter half of the twentieth century was treated as a downstream step in the development process. Now we as designers are often at the forefront of the process; helping companies better meet their customer’s needs.
Human-Centered Exploration.
Some characteristics designers should possess are: empathy, integrative thinking, optimism, experimentalism, and collaboration. Some of these I’ve learned prior to taking the graphic design program just though my own experiences. It’s important to have a deep understanding of the consumers lives and use the principles of design to innovate and build value.
Prototype, Testing, and Refinement.
The point of prototypes are not to finish the design but to help learn about its strengths and weaknesses. Prototypes should take up only the relative effort, investment and time need to generate useful feedback; creating a clearer picture.
Design Thinking = An Approach to Innovation
How to Make Design Thinking Part of the Innovation Drill: Begin at the beginning, take a human-centered approach, try early and often, seek outside help, blend big and small project, budget to the pace of innovation, find talent anyway you can, design for the cycle.
My illustrations are to show where I started at the beginning of this program and where I’m ended it. I have grown so much in my abilities to illustrate, proportion, use of proper techniques and over all skill.Â

ARTG 476 – Portfolio Studio Blog Post 1
Week one is done and I’m excited by all the new and interesting projects we will be learning about. Portfolio Studio will teach us about who we are and how to brand ourselves to our truest form. Personal Brand Self-Assessment Worksheet –  We have been asked to dive deep and think about who we are, what makes us unique, what we are good at and where we are headed. This assignment was interesting for me because I realized that I’m way to hard on myself, I need to give myself more credit for the things I’ve accomplished as well as the things I'm good at. We also touched on our weaknesses which made me realize the areas that I should spend a bit more time working on. The Pixie Dust portion of this exercises was to highlight what makes us different from one another. My 5 illustrations included that I’m a traveler, photographer, intelligent, passionate, and I hold memories via illustrations on my skin. My top three being my intelligence, photography and tattoos.Â
Intelligence: I pride myself on being a very logical and rational thinker, however I have the ability to dream up ideas and express my creativity through multiple facets in my life.
Photography: I see through a lens most of the time, I constantly am thinking this would be a good shot, this is the better angle even when I don’t have my camera on me. I think this is valuable because I see the world a little different from most people.
Tattoos: The artwork that I have on my body tells a story, it shows where I came from and where I'm going. I love that I wear the art I've drawn and that I’m able to visually represent the adventures I’ve been on. It reminds me to stay true to myself and to never settle for a path that isn't fulfilling.  Â

Today is the the last day of class and it is bitter sweet. I have learned a lot this semester and I feel that I have made progress with my typography skills. We got more critique today and worked on our type specimen poster further. I played around with more colours and different layouts. I am excited to see the final project on proper poster paper and size. I think that between getting critique and going through so many rounds of iterations my concept got stronger and stronger. Obviously, I could finesse forever but I will settle with a couple more final tweaks and will let it go. Typography is hard, but essential to in becoming a great graphic designer.
