Designer of the Week: Tapio Wirkkala

Finnish designer and sculptor, he did everything from glassware to metalwork and furniture. His puukko knife is very similar to one I have drawn and was going to make a one-off of. Everything online proves that he had a keen eye for simple, beautiful design. 

What else would you expect from a Finnish designer, I guess.

Jairo Morales is opening a new Restaurant in the lower east side of Manhattan named Mi Casa es Su Casa. It's been a fun ride working with him and Charles Mallea, AIA on visualizing the interior architecture of the space from the Layout of the Bar to the tile work in the bathroom. Stay tuned for more pictures and details.

Just went through an amazing week with the Goddamn Cobras and the Mohawk Arts Collective who opened their hearts and their home to us in a 7 day collaborative art, theater, craft, dance and lobster retreat in Bass Harbor, ME. My final piece was this nest designed and built for a music video for SMILE Swamp Princess a Rock Opera Experience by Justin Johnson and Megan Lui produced by Molly Brolin. Good crew, Great set and a Fantastic shoot thanks to Pavel Ezrohi of the Mohawks and everyone's volunteered time. The nest made for ample firewood.

Last year, CBS decided to move and rebrand their New York City based morning show from The Early Show on 5th ave. and 58th street at the GM building to CBS  This Morning at their Broadcast Center on 10th ave. and 57th street. Highlights of the project included an open plan newsroom with a perimeter AV truss behind a street-front glass window; all glass office walls and a nuanced LED lighting grid in the studio. Click to view the Video Walkthrough of the CBS This Morning Studio

These awesome edible Jello cups come in different flavors -- lemon-basil, ginger-mint, or rosemary-beet -- and are made of a gelatin substitute. They're also an environmentally friendly option to their less-tasty counterpart, the plastic cup. Jelloware is made with agar agar instead of gelatin, making it vegan, and the flavors (lemon-basil, ginger-mint, rosemary-beet) are meant to pair well with the drink inside. Like you crunch on an ice cream cone as you lick your scoop, you feast on your cup while you sip. The whole thing is biodegradable, which means you can compost the bits you leave behind.
