Here are the lyrics: [Intro: Ice Cube] Yo if you're fucked up, put your cups up Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg, nigga what's up See he's a gangster, I'm a hustler Y...
Having our discussion this week be on hip-hop and religion, this song was one of the first ones to come to mind. It is definitely not the most appropriate song, but the fact that they use church in their song still sends a message. The basic message of the song is that if you are having a tough time or are ‘scared’ then you should go to church and pray.
The obvious background of this song is directed at the inner city; mostly pointing at gangs, thugs and the drug dealers. For people in those categories, going to church will have them have peace and hopefully keep them protected from violence and death. All thought this song does have a strong message, the use of the language, beat and the artist makes the song less valuable. I remember hearing this song as a middle school and singing along to it with out actually knowing what they meant. It is a catchy song that gets people to dance and sing along too.
I actually watched Ice Cube perform this song live at Coachella a couple years ago and the whole vibe was insane. Everyone knew this song, everyone was rapping along and dancing with people around them. It was such a sick experience, even though the meaning about the song is more serious.
