THE SOULS OF ACHERON | 1898 | by ADOLF HIRÉMY-HIRSCHL
The painting depicts a scene from ancient Greek mythology. It shows the god Hermes, also known as Psychopomp. He guides the souls of the dead to the underworld. The scene is set on the banks of river Acheron. Charon's boat awaits to transport souls to the afterlife.
Various emotions of the dead are captured as they face their fate. The souls are shown with various expressions. These range from despair and resignation to hope and desperation. Hermes is depicted with determination and strength.
Symbolism in the painting is quite evident, including Hermes' central position. The outstretched arms of the souls around him draw the viewer's attention to the god. The colour contrast between Hermes and dead as well as light around his head emphasizes his divine status
The painting is considered one of best works by Hirémy-Hirschl. It is notable for its detailed composition and emotional depth. The piece has been praised for its ability to evoke a range of emotions in the viewer. Moreover, it is significant for its exploration of the human experience of loss and mortality
