But what? She exhaled audibly, closing her eyes tight as she willed herself to be calm despite the unease filling in her chest and stinging like acid. It was not her doing that caused the man’s death, no, he had… they needed to…. they were in danger, she said so. She saw it. Didn’t she?

“I… it is as if I am at war with myself, Enoshima-san. He had ill intentions, but death is…” she fiddles with her fingers in her lap, eyes focused on them for a moment before turning back to her friend. Her friend…

“Will anyone ever find out…?” she whispered.

“Not so long as you keep it a secret.”

Her voice had become softer, but more serious. They had to impress upon Sonia the importance of trusting them, and the somewhat loftier tone they’d been using before didn’t fit.

“As far as the rest of the world is concerned, he’s just gone missing.” If anything, it was a more noble fate for him than Junko might’ve given him, had she been alone. “No one will ever know but us. If you think about it, it’s better for him this way!”

She leaned in slightly, a little closer to Sonia, and when she spoke again it was in a whisper.

“There are worse punishments than death.”

Junko pretends to look thoughtful, but in truth they already know the answer - or at least, they know the answer Sonia will give: a nervous, resounding “yes.” Thankfully, they think they know just how to respond.

“Maybe we do,” she concedes, “but I don’t agree. Do you remember what I told you?” She pauses a moment to allow Sonia to think. “Sometimes, life isn’t fair. Sometimes, even the most horrible people will go unpunished. But we’re good people at heart! Don’t you think the world could cut us some slack?”
