just the fact that damon went ahead and started planning for his and elena’s life together asap. that he bought that damn bar next to that damn medical school while he still could do it without issue. that he knew all along what he was going to do… he never looked back. that the life he began to create was the epitome of what elena told him. because he wanted to make her happy more than anything and that little game they played about the future was so much more than a game. it was his way of ensuring that he gave her everything she imagined. 

the fact that he was able to see through stefan’s attempt to dissuade him about his choice. that damon was finally secure enough to know that he and elena would make it together, even when the two people closest to him wanted him to question it. the fact that he knew that their future might not be perfect and there might not be “no bumps” but that was okay because there are never any guarantees. 

the fact that damon salvatore was ready to give up vampirism and immortality for a human life with a limited time span and trivial issues like carpooling and paying the bills… all so that he could have even a silver of a chance at marrying elena gilbert and having her babies and watching her love her life while loving him…

the fact that this is all happening when it is only going to be ripped away….
