"We will have lost only the moment we give up and stop fighting."
進撃らくがきまとめ【腐向け有り】 by 釜本
“I guess by now I should know enough about loss to realize that you never really stop missing someone - you just learn to live around the huge gaping hole of their absence.”
She is a weapon, a killer. Do not forget it. You can use a spear as a walking stick, but that will not change its nature.

"You wouldn’t be the first," she mumbled, swaying slightly in the doorway.
It wasn’t usual for Maddie to be drinking prior to such an event, but the recent events in Trost had driven her to an unhappy place. She needed a good night’s sleep and someone to do exactly that with. She didn’t care who. "Yeah it is a bit last minute- but if nothing were last minute it wouldn’t be the Recon Corps."
Nanaba saw how close the woman was to falling over, and she likely would've by now had it not been for the doorframe to lean oneself against. She tutted once she recognized the smell of alcohol on the rifleman's breath and reached over to wrap a firm arm around one of her's to keep her stable and stop her slight wobbling.
"Why don't you come in? You can lay down and relax."
Without giving Maddie the time to accept or reject her offer, she went ahead with leading the other into her room, shutting the door with a swift, but light, kick backwards.
"You can rest on my bed for a while, alright?"
”Hey, Nanaba.” Hanji replied, heading towards the sink. She needed her tea fix and didn’t expect anyone up. A typical night for the researcher, up far too late and had no thoughts of going to bed any time soon.
”Just getting some tea,” Once at the sink, she grabbed one of the dirty cups and made sure to wash it and started some tea. “Do you want some as well?” It was worth it to offer. Hanji plopped down in the chair across from her, raising an eyebrow. “Any reason you’re up?”
”She nodded to acknowledge the familiar woman's reply, glad to see a friendly face so late at night. Hanji was quite the night owl as well, wasn't she? Of course, she likely had more of a reason to be up at this hour than Nanaba did, as she was likely kept awake by her work.
”It was more than the blonde could say, as her only excuse was an inconvenient bit of insomnia here and there.
"Tea sounds lovely, I would love some. If you don't mind, that is," She smiled despite the bit of exhaustion creeping up on her, and watched as her comrade walked over and took a seat. In response to the question, she first shook her head. "No real reason, no. I'm not usually asleep at this hour anyway, but I don't often come to the mess hall. I usually stay in my room."
"I suspect you've been up working. Any breakthroughs in your research?"
{ I LIVE. And now I can finally do replies. }
”I work better alone,” Annie replied, taking a sip on her coffee. She felt the girl’s eyes on her and she sighed. Was it really that hard to find some peace and quiet in here? “People slow me down.
Though she would not admit it, she felt rather proud of herself that Shadis found her able with the 3DMG’s. She didn’t care much for social skills; she preferred the company of her thought over the company of others.
The short haired girl remained. Annie sighed. “Why are you forcing a conversation with me?” She asked. The girl tried to make it as obvious as possible that she would rather they stay silent instead of talk.
She just wouldn’t shut up.
"Of course, of course." The veteran nodded in affirmation, tapping a finger against the rim of her teacup. There was no doubt that Annie was the "lone wolf" type, but she didn't honestly think the young woman was as cold as she let on. "But comradery is important, no matter what branch of the military you decide upon at the end of your training."
She knew the girl was growing more and more tired of her by the second, but there was a part of her that was a bit entertained by it. Maybe it was the fact that she's been around a good number of anti-social and icy people throughout the years, so she knew how to deal with uninterested responses.
"Forcing you? Well I wouldn't say that," her eyes fell closed as her shoulders rose in a shrugging gesture, a smile of contentment still present on her lips. "You don't seem the type of person to let anyone force you into anything."
"You never had to answer me in the first place. You did that all on your own." Nanaba picked up her cup and brought it to her lips, but spoke before taking another drink. "I promise to leave you here to enjoy your midnight snack alone once I finish my tea; how does that sound?"

& my heart has wept for those that i could not save
Annie ignored the girl’s talk of midnight snack and continued to munch on her bread. She got up and prepared herself a nice warm cup of coffee before returning to her seat. She stirred her coffee and took a sip before settling it back down, dipping her bread in her coffee.
Annie would have ignored the girl’s whole presence if she had just stopped talking.
"It’s doing fine," she said shortly, rolling her eyes. "Really? And where did you hear these ‘good things’ from?"
"Mm, that's good to hear," she spoke before once again preoccupying herself with a sip from her cup. As quiet as the girl was, an answer was an answer, and she accepted it all the same. Even that rolling of her eyes, which she almost laughed at.
"Your instructor - Instructor Shadis - of course," Nanaba went on to answer with, leaning back a bit in her own seat. "He speaks quite highly of your skills with the gear, though apparently your social skills are a bit lacking."
She was merely teasing, really. An anti-social soldier did not really mean they were a bad one, however teamwork was very important to the survival of squad members and allies.
"Right- guess what? You’re with me for the expedition. Sharpen your firearm skills, yeah?"
She hated to wake people up like this but the expedition did leave tomorrow. Karanese district was the exit point- Maddie’s home town. That and she had been drinking a little to try and calm the nerves- so clarity in thought wasn’t as strong as usual.
"Is that so?" Nanaba was genuinely surprised to hear this news, especially when the expedition was planned for the next afternoon. It must have been a last minute decision, and she supposed it wasn't an expedition where they expected much danger.
And her skills with any sort of firearm really weren't the best, so a bit of practice would do her some good. Certainly couldn't do any harm.
"Well then, I look forward to working with you, uhm... Apologies, but your name slips my mind." It was embarrassing to admit, since she was often so good with names, but this woman wasn't one she saw too often as far as she knew.
