La Mort St Innocent, 1530 From the Cemetery of the Innocents in Paris. The gaunt image of Death stood in the center of the cemetery of the Innocents. On his shield, a quatrain recalls: “He is alive, as is full of art,  Nor strength to strength, I do hit my dart, In order to yawn to their pittance. ” With the removal of the cemetery in 1786, the skeleton was brought to Saint-Gervais, then Notre Dame, where the arm was restored by the sculptor Deseine, then the Museum of French Monuments.
