My final decided layout for the exhibition.
Studio Process.
Studio Process.
Moving and playing about with many different layouts, plinths and sculptures... I have the hard decision of picking out how many plinths I need (6 in total- 2 large and 4 medium/small), placements and also sculptures. These images show the many different angles and the different layouts I was testing for my final. My placement needs to be carefully thought through as I have a studio/ exhibition space behind me so I need to make a gap/clear walk way through the that exhibition.
My Imagery. Has a big part in my artwork, the imagery influences the sculptural work. Texture, colour, unknown....
Using off cuts of wood from cutting the wooden stands and PVA glue mixed together to create a paste- I used this for any little drill holes or marks of uneven edges, leave it to dry overnight then sand it back down to the wood.
Testing an idea for my plinths, my plinths are waist (a bit higher) level depending on the viewers height. I was wondering what the sculptures would look like as part of the plinth ‘dripping’ effect, this links with my work through the way the skin is dripping on the sculptures. I also decided to test painting a little bit of the base white to create more of an illusion with the colour popping without the colour of the MDF wood, so the sculpture is submerged in itself and the all white studio space. I decided further on this after a few days of looking constantly and asking advice, as I dont want the sculpture to become part of the plinth or the plinth to become part of the sculpture, I want the sculptures to be individual to themselves.
Full process shown!! Similar process to both the first sculpture I done (clay) and the second (clay and silicone) Dry Time (including creating time)- 4 full days Paint Used- x5 modelling paints and x1 oil paint (white) Sculpture Material- silicone clear Extra Material- none Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- female figure (lower body) Rota Edging- double roman Dowel- pine wood and sandbeach Shape of Stand- square/rectangle Measurements (including dowel)- * 18mm- Dowel Thickness * 24 x 14cm- Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 26cm- Height * 12 x13cm- Width of Hole from Edge * 12cm- Hole Length from Edge * 11 1/2cm- Hole Length from Rota Edge * 10 x 11cm- Width of Hole from Rota I absolutely loved doing these sculptures (figurative), they have an element of modern Ancient Greek Goddess figure sculptures but then combined with original contemporary abstract textures of art, almost creating the two into something natural, the elegant figure vs the reality of the body/skin bulging out of this simplistic figure, the rawness of the colours and the intensity of the figure create something that defies the normality.
STEP 9- COMBINING ALL MATERIALS TOGETHER. Using all materials, but also showing the full process of this sculpture, combining, colour, stand, materials and textures into one. Dry Time (including creating time)- 5 full days Paint Used- x5 modelling paints and x1 oil paint (white) Sculpture Material- silicone clear Extra Material- none Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- female figure (full body) Rota Edging- chamfer x2 - on base and chamfer x1 - on top (examples on my desk) Dowel- pine wood and sandbeach Shape of Stand- square/rectangle Measurements (including dowel)- * 18mm up and 8mm across- Dowel Thickness * top- 24 x 14cm and bottom 36 x24cm - Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 29.2cm- Height * Full sculpture- 36 x 24cm- Length and Width Using a 2 layer stand but also a upright and then to the right dowel to hold the sculpture up together and give it a different appearance with the dowel coming up the side of the sculpture/ figure. Using a tin foil base to keep the body stable. Using this technique I find was the best, even though I do like the abstract versions of the sculptures I feel the figurative ones have a modest, elegant feel to them even with the skin, I like how the clay has stayed the same colour and it makes the silicone pop, and really stand out against the figurative element.
This sculpture has been made with the stand, silicone and the object. Half way through the sculpture the weight became too much for the top of the slanted dowel, so the sculpture was top heavy which means that it won’t sit in the holding position. I was looking forward to the progression of this sculpture due to the dowel movement, and how it sat and using the breather object, which is a primary object from when I was in hospital, it does make me sad that this wont be displayed in part of my exhibition but I thought I would show the example and what could go wrong throughout the sculpture process.
Experimenting out of my comfort zone again and going larger scale, but using the same technique with the dowel positions as sculpture no.14, experimenting with x2 larger/ longer dowels but one longer than the other. Dry Time (including creating time)- 5 hours Paint Used- makeup just foundation Sculpture Material- silicone (ivory and white) and liquid latex (clear) Extra Material- tablets Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- none specific Rota Edging- double roman Dowel- pine wood Shape of Stand- rectangle but square Measurements (including dowel)- *x1- 14mm and x2- 18mm - Dowel Thickness * 40 x 21cm- Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * x1- 67cm and x2 51cm- Height * x1- 4 1/2cm x 6cm and x2- - Width of Hole from Edge * x1- 5cm and x2- 6cm - Hole Length from Edge Working with packets fro my medication, once again hospital symbol. I love the effect of using the crossover dowels, I feel it adds more to the sculpture and how the material sits, I like the fact it has the dripping effect with layers of silicone and latex (6 layers of latex and 3 layers of silicone). I decided with the colour on this one that I would go lighter with the effect of the tones of skin, so I simply just used foundation to see what it looks like with the ivory silicone, I like the subtly of tone and skin but not too harsh.
Using diagonal dowels, crossing them over rather than having them straight and upright, looking at the how the material sits and if I can experiment with draping the material (silicone) across the 2 diagonal dowels. Dry Time (including creating time)- 2 hours Paint Used- x3 modelling paints Sculpture Material- silicone (clear) Extra Material- injection needle Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- none specific Rota Edging- none Dowel- pine wood Shape of Stand- square Measurements (including dowel)- * 12mm- Dowel Thickness * 14 x 14cm- Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 20cm- Height * 19.7cm - Width of Hole from Edge (both the same) * 2 x 3cm- Hole Length from Edge (both the same) This sculpture is similar to my miniature collection sculptures, but without using the rota and also using different angled dowels, using the needle once again is similar to the hospital band and the syringe, it adds the element of a hospital but it still has an unknown element of why and what happened?
More about this piece below (semester 1 in this blog), going back to the netting and expanding foam but using a stand underneath to see how it sits and works around the base. Dry Time (including creating time)- 3 hours Paint Used- x5 modelling paints and x1 oil paint (yellow) Sculpture Material- expanding foam (white) Extra Material- netting Base- MDF wood- Shape of Sculpture- none specific (letting the foam expanding an create itself) Rota Edging- none Dowel- none Shape of Stand- rectangle Measurements (including dowel)- * 42 x 11cm- Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 20ish cm- Height Going back and experimenting with expanding foam again with the netting to set the shape, going back to this process again was purely to see how the expanding foam will work on top of the wooden stand and would it give it any structure to the sculpture, it didnt work as much as I hoped it would, but the experiment was worth comparing this one to the other realism but abstract sculptures.
Using larger scale, taller and larger base, incorporating objects again (more personal) took 8 layers of silicone. Dry Time (including creating time)- 6 hours Paint Used- makeup and x5 modelling paints Sculpture Material- silicone (ivory and white) Extra Material- my own hair Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- none specific Rota Edging- double roman r- 1/4″ Dowel- pine wood Shape of Stand- square Measurements (including dowel)- * 21mm - Dowel Thickness * 41.5 x 41.5cm- Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 70ish cm- Height * 20 x 20.7cm- Width of Hole from Edge * 25cm- Hole Length from Edge This sculpture is very personal to me, I would say it was one of the most personal due to the object incorporated into it, I have used my own hair, but my own hair that I lost when I was going through chemotherapy, and the hair I still use to this day with the injections I had, I decided to knot and tangle the hair but also drape and mix the coloured paints and material into the tangled hair, giving it more of a ball of hair effect. Creating this sculpture long was influenced by one of my first sculptures (long latex sculpture) but I wanted to use the silicone and the object to add more relevance to my more recent sculptures, I wanted it to be long and tall so it can be more in your face rather than miniature and free standing to add the element ‘I’m still standing’.
Continuing with the small minimal stands, multiple dowels, objects and the rota. Using different size dowels again, but more extreme (tiny vs big- long and short). Dry Time (including creating time)- 5 hours Paint Used- x2 oil paints (for texture) white and brown Sculpture Material- silicone (ivory) for a skin colour/ look Extra Material- syringe Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- none specific Rota Edging- chamfer r-13/16″ Dowel- pine wood Shape of Stand- rectangle Measurements (including dowel)- * 12mm - Dowel Thickness * 14 x 24cm - Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 11 1/2 cm- Height x1 * 19.7cm- x2 * 6cm- x3 * 6.6 x 7.5cm- Width of Hole from Edge x1 * 13.5 x 15cm -x2 *3 1/2 x 2 1/2 -x3 * 4cm- Hole Length from Edge x1 * 10cm- x2 * 5 1/2cm- x3 * 4 x 5cm- Width of Hole from Rota x1 * 2 x 3cm- x2 * 8 x 9cm- x3 * 3cm- Hole Lenght from Rota x1 *9cm- x2 *4 1/2cm- x3 Once again adding hospital gear as part of the objects in the sculpture, this adding the known but unknown element to the sculptures, keeping it simplistic by just adding the one syringe and then having the silicone (skin) overlapping the syringe giving it a feel of being embedded into the sculpture. Also experimenting with a different colour silicone again, using ivory to add the skin element without having to pick and paint at the sculpture too much with the paints. I like this sculpture, I feel it has a more simple approach through colour and also the display itself.
STEP 7- ADDING DOWELS AND THE SHAPE OF STANDS. Once again using a number of dowels but this time using different lengths to see the effects of how the material sits on many combined dowels, also including rota edging. Dry Time (including creating time)- 5 hours Paint Used- makeup (foundation, lipstick and powder) Sculpture Material- silicone (clear and white) Extra Material- Penicillin hospital band Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- none specific Rota Edging- wave edge r-3/6 Dowel- pine wood Shape of Stand- square Measurements (including dowel)- * 8mm - Dowel Thickness * 14 x 14cm - Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 21.5cm - Height x1 * 11.6cm- x2 * 14.8cm- x3 * 13cm- x4 * 3 x 3.4cm - Width of Hole from Edge (all the same) * 2 x 2.4cm - Width of Hole from Rota (all the same) * 3.8cm - Hole Length from Edge (all the same) * 2.5cm- Hole Length from Rota (all the same) Combining both clear silicone and white silicone to see what the outcome is like for both different coloured silicone, it has the same effect and the same texture just adds with the white because I am using makeup without any white paint, also using the x4 dowels all at different lengths, I love the outcome as it has a diversity and originality about it. Also including the objects but adding my hospital band, this is a given at what it is and what it means, so I done need to explain any further with what I intended on showing with this object included.
STEP 7- ADDING MORE DOWELS TO THE SCULPTURE BASES. Exploring with the small stands still, as they have a delicacy about them. Using more than 1 dowel, using 2 instead but also taking the sculpture back to being more plain (no objects, no rota) Dry Time (including creating time)- 3 hours Paint Used- x3 modelling paints and x2 oil paints (white and yellow) Sculpture Material- silicone (clear) Extra Material- none Base- MDF wood Shape of Sculpture- none specific Rota Edging- none Dowel- pine wood Shape of Stand- square Measurements (including dowel)- * 8mm- Dowel Thickness * 14 x 14cm- Length and Width of MDF Wood Stand * 13.6cm- Height of 2 Dowels * 3 x 4cm- Width of Hole from Edge of Both * 4cm- Hole Length from Edge of Both Deciding to keep this sculpture plain and simple focusing on the material and the colours but also how I drip the silicone onto the sculpture stand, I want layers of dripping along the base, so it looks more like internal organs rather than the skin effect all my other sculptures have looked like.
