location: Butcher’s Pumpkin Patch
“Hold on– ,” Quincy interrupted the conversation he’d been having as he spotted Ava doing exactly what he just told her not to do. "Ava, please don’t sit on the pumpkins,” Quincy warned the 11 year old for the third time.
“But they do it on Instagram,” Ava protested, still perched atop the fruit trying to take a selfie.
Quincy rolled his eyes, if he had to hear about ridiculous social media trends one more time he was going to be the one actually destroying pumpkins. “The pumpkins are getting ruined when they do that. What about the people who come after you. Do you think they’d want your butt to have been on their future jack-o’-lantern or whatever?”
He would be laughing to, if he wasn’t a bit cranky from a lack of sleep, and annoyed because he had to be repeating himself for her to listen. “It doesn’t matter how cute the photos are, or if you think that you’re light as a feather. Even if they don’t break, you are damaging them.”
“They’re just pumpkins,” Ava muttered as she stood up.
“Excuse me,” he arched a brow, shooting her ‘the look’ regarding the attitude. “Unless you’re planning on buying every single pumpkin that you sit on, try to be respectful of other peoples’ property.” He might just make a lesson out of this and have her pay for the ones she already used out of her allowance. “The next pumpkin patch I see you sitting, laying or playing in, it’s coming out of your allowance.” Ava gave a much better response that time around before going back to wandering around nearby and taking pictures.
“Man, I’m sorry about that,” he returned to the person he had been conversing with before the interruption. “Kids.” He sighed, shaking his head. Quincy didn’t want any of his own, he had far too many professional aspirations, none of which factored in kids. “What were we talking about again?”
Devi was not used to seeing Q step into father mode. He has always been serious with her, but she never listened to him. That’s just how their relationship goes. But to see someone, especially a child, listen to him as if he is an authority figure was knew. Especially when they were the same height, but this is a thought she’s going to keep to herself.
Maybe Ava would’ve listened if Devi wasn’t making a face behind Q while he was talking. She stopped when she noticed the seriousness in his tone. Plus, she could sense the annoyance in his tone as well. She rocked on her heels until he finished, looking back up at him when he turned his attention back on her. “You were gonna give me some money,” not even close to what they were talking about, but she wanted to see if he would fall for it.
