“Heh. For someone new to this, you really have it down. Being a demon has its own merits it seems.” No way in hell did he intend to share the story though. It was long, convoluted, and it gave him a headache thinking back on it. It felt almost as if it were a dream at this point.
“Nah, just seen a lot in my life. Plus...” Dante frowned, asking himself if he really wanted to talk about this. He shrugged to himself, deciding it wouldn’t hurt any. He was past it anyways... mostly.
“It happened to someone close to me and I lost them. Found out too late.”
cosumuse:
“Hey Hey now, don’t make this sentimental.” Now he was starting to sound like his master who doubled as his girlfriend. “Good or not, I’m only doing what I must as a servant. Free will is a stranger to me.” So he said anyway but compared to his former situation, he certainly had more of it now.
“I am an altered version of the heroic spirit Cu Chulainn. You could say I am like his shadow half.”
This guy’s words bothered him, but Dante kept it to himself. It wasn’t his place to say anything and, given the guy’s circumstances, it makes sense he might see himself as nothing more than a servant. Hopefully his master was a good enough person to try to kick that out of him... he sure would.
How this guy described himself caught his attention, though. What did he mean by an ‘altered version’? “What... did someone take your original self and corrupt you to the point where you were no longer yourself?”
If so: Who the fuck would do that?
cosumuse:
“Me, a demon? No. These are the bones of a sea monster I had slain.” At this point though, he could believe some part of him was demonic. He planted his spear firmly on the ground and looked the other over quietly, this guy wasn’t a heroic spirit? Coulda fooled him.
“Yeah, that’s right. I’m provided this form by my master’s mana and then some.” It was better than having to act as a king at least.
“Master, huh?” Yeah, he was definitely a familiar then. It was strange, though. This guy seemed pretty independent - like he had his own thoughts and opinions. “They must be a good person. I mean... you got a lot of free will from what I can tell.”
There was a pause as Dante considered something else.
“Either that or it’s just the type of person you were.”
cosumuse:
“Ah geez, that’s what I was doing?” He sighed, clearly embarrassed at his small self’s behavior. “Ah, you’re the half demon right? It’s coming back to me.”
“Yup. Name’s Dante - I hunt demons for a living.” He looked Cu Alter over. “You certainly look intimating enough to be called a demon, but you don’t feel like one.” Plus, he didn’t kill all demons mercilessly... he sometimes let them go.
“Your other self said you’re a heroic spirit, something like a familiar? But you’re here... physically. Like, flesh and blood. You gotta have some strong magic backing you up for that...”
cosumuse:
“Oh, so I gotta become the big guy then if I wanna get a good fight going with you, huh? You sound like a pretty tough bastard, I wouldn’t mind trying you out sometime.” There was that toothy grin again. “I gotta admire that confidence. Know what? I think I’ll let you meet him, as fun as it has been messing with you. Seeya round.”
And with that, the seemingly miniature plush version of Cu Alter disappeared, immediately replaced with a much larger, more intimidating version of him.
…Except he was rubbing his temple and clearly looked annoyed.
“What the hell was that kid doing while I was out?”
Whoa... he’s a big guy in his true form. A devilish-looking big guy at that. What was with all those spikes?
“Um... throwing sticks?”
cosumuse:
“Bingo.” He was glad he didn’t have to explain himself, thankfully this guy was pretty sharp, made sense for a half demon. “Hey, if it helps, I’m half deity. I got an even more monstrous form past my big self but that only happens if I get pissed off enough.”
He scooted closer, giving a mischievous grin as his tail wagged. “So what do I gotta do to bring out the demon part of you?”
“Well,” Dante started, “Quickest way is being enough of a challenge that I have to use it. Haven’t ran into anyone like that in years, though. Another way is nearly killing me - it’ll instantly come out then - but that’s difficult to do. I’m not an easy guy to kill, kiddo.”
He was, essentially, a demonic cockroach.
“The closest thing that did was the Demon King and yet, here I am. I didn’t kill him, though... wasn’t strong enough to back then. Maybe things would be different today if I had tried.”
That was actually a scary thought. If he could beat Mundus with his current power, then that would mean he was as strong, if not more than that, as a demon king. He tried to push that thought away. “But anyways, those are the surefire ways of getting the other guy out. Might not want to try them.”
cosumuse:
“Well, I never seen any demons like you before so I guess that leaves us both puzzled, huh? Sides, I don’t normally look like this. I’m taller than you, for starters.”
He nodded in a response to his question. “Yeah, that’s right. Something like that.”
“What? This?” He said, jokingly looking at himself. “It isn’t even my true form, bud. I live with humans, so I gotta look the part.” Not only that, but he was half-human himself and chose to live that way rather than a demon. “Got a more demonic form hiding.”
Dante looked over the small Cu. “So why do you look like that if you’re... taller? Ran out of magic or something and needed to recoup?” He’s been around so much magical stuff that, honestly, it was the first thing that came to his mind.
cosumuse:
“Half demon, huh?” That wasn’t what he expected but he has the memories of some stranger shit his other selves have seen and he himself happened to be a demi god after all.
“What, you never seen a heroic spirit before? It’s as it sounds. It’s a hero, it’s a spirit, who might even be heroic. They’re from legends all around the world.”
He dropped from Dante’s shoulder and did a fake bow.
“And you’re looking at one.”
Sort of.
“Never heard of anyone who looks like you.” There’s no way the little tyke was a hero. “But... you said they’re spirits? Doesn’t sound like you mean that in a ‘ghost’ way. Familiars or something?”
cosumuse:
Oh, what a wise guy this one was! But now that his question was answered, he had to inspect the other even closer. Well Dante, you got a little dinosaur climbing up onto you like a squirrel now.
“Hm, just what are you anyway? You’re not a heroic spirit…not a guardian either.” He sat on his shoulder examining his hair. “But you do look a lot like that other guy in red, same hair and everything.” He glanced down at his jacket. “Slightly better fashion sense though.”
The more he fussed with the other, the more his tail started to wag.
Dante watched Mini Cu climb right up on him. “I’m... a half-demon.” Something was on his mind as he answered that. What the hell were heroic spirits and guardians?
“.... The hell is a heroic spirit?”
Apparently he forgot to use his social filter around the little guy.
cosumuse:
Mini blinked, surprised that the man actually caught it. He couldn’t help but snicker like the little gremlin he was. “Nice catch! Just who are you?”
His face changed though once he brought up his parents. “Hey hey hey, just cause I’m small doesn’t mean I’m a kid. ‘Sides, that’s a complicated subject.”
Did he refer to his big self as his parent? Technically he was him just smaller and sassier. There were also all the adoptive fathers his non altered self had, his uncle Fergus, and then his real father who is…well, a deity.
“…That’s a lot of dads.” He murmured to himself.
“Anyway! I guess I should have expected this from someone who’s…” He sniffed at the air and scooted closer to the other. “…Not human?” Whoa, now he really wanted to know who this guy was.
Dante wasn’t surprised that this... kid could tell he wasn’t human. After all, the little guy didn’t feel human, either. It was strange. He knelt down to Mini Cu. “Yeah, I’m not... but neither are you. That why you’re such a trouble maker?”
No, he wasn’t going to let this go.
daughterofnero replied to your post: “Ya gotta wonder why I haven’t gotten tired of...
“Because you’re a pretty great guy, I think.”
“Thanks, sweetheart!” He wasn’t sure he really agreed with her, but he was glad she thought so. “How are you doin’?”
cosumuse:
“Hey Hotshot. I could always make things interesting for you.”
By interesting he of course meant throw a really cool stick at him that hits as hard as if he were his big self.
Unfortunately for Mini Cu, Dante caught the stick just in time. He looked down at the other and arched an eyebrow. The hell was with this kid?
“Didn’t your parents ever teach you not to throw sticks at people?” Even he wasn’t a trouble maker at this age. What made the little guy be one?
“Ya gotta wonder why I haven’t gotten tired of this stuff yet.”
