please remember that this attack isn’t unprecedented, gar bars and clubs have experienced violence since the very beginning. in 1973 32 people were killed at the gay bar The Upstairs Lounge after it was set on fire. A 21-year old woman in Northern Ireland has been handed down a three month suspended sentence for inducing her own abortion through abortion pills that she purchased online. She was reported to the police by her housemates. Abortion in almost all cases is illegal in Northern Ireland and can lead to extremely harsh criminal sentencing. In the wake of this case it is important to take a look at the draconian attitudes and legislation that exist in Northern Ireland in relation to abortion. They are outdated. There is at least one other current court case where a woman may be facing jail time for procuring/supplying abortion pills (which are illegal in the North) for her daughter. And with an open letter with approximately 200 signatures admitting to helping other women procure abortion pills in Northern Ireland, it is clear that these laws are unworkable, unrealistic and illogical. Every woman should have the right to choose, and it’s up to us to reduce the stigma so that women can make their own decisions without judgement, unwarranted criticism and criminal convictions.

People on such short trips usually don’t stick around long enough to realize how ineffective they are being.  In Uganda, I got used to seeing groups of young people come for week-long visits at the orphanage where taught English. They would play with the kids, give them a bracelet or something, and then leave all-smiles, thinking they just saved Africa. I was surprised when the day after the first group left, exactly zero of the kids were wearing the bracelet they had received the day prior. The voluntourists  left thinking they gave the kids something they didn’t have before (and with bragging rights for life). But the kids didn’t care, because what they really wanted was school uniforms, their school fees to be paid, guaranteed meals, basic healthcare, and the like — the basics.   Worse, they can even be harmful to children who struggle with abandonment issues.  This should not be understated; have you ever considered the negative impact it routinely has on kids after they bond with someone for a week, and then that person disappears from their life? If your justification for going on these trips is “seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces”, then you’re part of the problem.
