“Nice, he actually came,” Bakura said with a grin as he looked over the being. He didn’t look at all like what Bakura had imagined the god to look like. However, he was handsome.

“Is that not the right thing?”

Hunter shrugged. “He did say saffron or cumin or whatever but I didn’t feel like going to the store. Blood’s easier. Blood’s free. I have so much of it in my veins, and it worked.”

“A bit grim,” he said before shaking his head and standing, going to poke the god on the shoulder.

Apophi huffed. “Do not touch unless I give you express permission.” He brushed Bakura’s hand away. “Why have I been summoned? I would hope it is not to play some sort of silly game.”

“Uh, yeah, that looks about right. Um… it’s supposed to glow or something, maybe I did it wrong?” He turned to Google for help adjusting the symbols. After a few small changes, it lit up and began to glow with a blue light.       

Bakura made a small “ooh” sound and clapped in a slightly joking way.

“Impressive nightlight,” he joked, looking down at the ring.

“Hey, just give it a minute. It’ll work. Light grows, then bam. Instant portal to the underworld. Or something like that.”

He stepped back, watching as the light changed from blue to a brilliant gold, slowly engulfing the room in soft warmth. With the light came the rich smells of saffron and perfumed oils, accompanied by what seemed to be the distant sound of waves lapping against the shore.

Bakura watched the light show before he chuckled.

“Likes to take his sweet time, doesn’t he, the asshole,” he said as he shook his head.

Eventually Apophis appeared, coils forming from the bands of the circle, looking entirely unimpressed.

"What... have I been summoned through? Is this a circle made of blood?" He sounded rather bothered by that implication.

“If I were any other man, I might have spouted off something about family bringing only weakness with it. It is a sentiment that many I have met have expressed. I do not fully disagree with it, but I also do not see those weaknesses as entirely negative. Allowing yourself to care for others… makes things more exciting in a way.”

Apophis waved a hand at her. “Ah, I speak too much. Will you reconsider sharing a meal with me, knowing what you do now?”

“In some cases I’ve found that weakness to garner massive strength.  Especially among humans and the like.  The desire to protect that which you care for can be forged into a powerful weapon against your enemies.”  She finished with a sip of her drink.

She nodded. “I’ll consider it.  Still no deals of any kind.  Claim guest rules and all that. Think of it as a compliment to your cunning. Now as for the boys…  I assume Lion is taking magic lessons from you?”

“Indeed. The desire to protect my loved ones is truly the only thing keeping me from breaking the magic that binds me to the underworld.” Apophis got up to pour them both a drink.

“Lion has asked me not to speak on the matter of his magic, but I am not bound to the word of a child. He is indeed spending a portion of his time here learning what he can, though he is unaware that it is due to the fact that his power draws from the underworld. I believe he is quite embarrassed by his own ineptitude.”

Apophis let Ryou settle against him, gently petting the smaller mer’s head. “Legends shape nations. Forge empires. There is no better way to know the essence of a culture than to know what stories it was borne from.” He absently twirled some of Ryou’s white locks around his fingers. 

“It seems royalty is quite differently educated now. I mourn the mysticism your upbringing lacked. Perhaps I am simply too old to know how things are done.”

“A bore? You could never be.” Apophis straightened his adornments then offered Ryou his arm. “You are a wonder to talk to. Please, share with me more from your homes, both new and old. I would love to know what makes you… you. Cultural influences contribute so much to who we are as people.”

“Well, if you insist.” Ryou gave a laugh, arms wrapping around the one offered to him.

“I’m not quite a good of a source as a book from my home kingdom would be, but I can try my best to fill in any gaps. Knowledge is of great importance, when used correctly.” The mer hummed.

“On the contrary, I believe you to be a much better source of knowledge. It is hard to know a kingdom without knowing its occupants.” Apophis swam with Ryou, taking him back to the library. This time it was child free, but a few servants flitted around, shelving books. 

“Don’t mind my court. Pick what you’d like and relax with me.”

“I wed Kebechet over a millennia ago, most of our daughters are grown. Still, we seem to just have more and more… not that I am complaining, mind you. I adore being a father. I only wonder why she goes along with it when there is not a motherly scale on her body.” He sighed and poked at his food. “Not looking to remarry, Anubis has made it quite clear that my probation will be extended if I take up affairs with another divine being.”

“I wondered if the chaos parenthood can bring might appeal to you.”   She couldn’t the small smile before nodding in understanding.  “I see.  Is it not enough for Anubis to be a grandpa so many times over?”  Would not the Jackal upon His Mountain feel some sort of pride to being a grandfaher to so many?  Demon like or not grandkids were wonderful.  She should know as she had quite a few generations of them.

“It most certainly does, I love how wonderfully active my sweet girls are. Always getting up to such mischief!” Like a tru proud father, he beamed brightly when discussing his daughters. 

“Anubis does not find pride in my children as I do. I believe many of the gods have lost touch with what is entirely so wonderful about mortals. When you have infinite life, it becomes hard to find as much importance in relationships.”

“Rotating babysitters.  That’s good.  The little Shadow is definitely a unique individual amongst his kind.”  She agreed.  “Really though all girls?  You are like Akhenaten and Nefertiti in that regard.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.  It’s unfortunate not all individuals are up to the challenge of parenting.  I’m tempted to tell you to collect the child support and move on to someone better but I’m aware love is a complicated beast.”  At least with people.  The Egyptian pantheon wasn’t the worst when it came to mixed up relationships but they weren’t clean.  The lettuce myth still made her cringe, even if Set was a evil jerk.

“All girls, all thirty-six. Every one a good little princess. I do love my girls so much, they are all such unique little hunters. I am not missing anything in not having a son, but the idea of adopting one still makes me quite happy.”

“I am wed to one of Anubis’s daughters, Kebechet. It was a predictable union, snake and snake. Sometimes I wonder if it was only arranged to force me further under the heel of the other gods, though.”

“36?  Is this part of subtle plot to rule the world?  And I thought Nun having 5 kids in a row was a lot.  Little hunters all… oh I’m not sure how some of the mortal world might handle that.  Reminds me of my family though.  Mostly girls all, with a Matriarchal society and all that.  A pact with a goddess helps too.”  Ensuring each first born was a girl so that the Queens line would continue unbroken.  

“Anubis has daughters?  Huh and I thought only Horus was a lucky father. If you wanted to stay snake and snake though why not try… Meretseger?  I believe that’s the name.  Supposed be a protector of the Valley of the Kings both merciful and punster.  As much as I try to learn about your pantheon I’m afraid I get terribly confused at times.  Anyways… I thank you for telling me this. At least I can rest easy the poor boys haven’t sold their soul in some way.  Necrofia will be happy.”

“You are very correct in stating he has a hole in his soul. It is much smaller in size now than it had been before, he has done a commendable job of mending it without even knowing of its existence. If you were to have inspected his unassuming brother more thoroughly, perhaps you would have discovered the truth for yourself. You see… the other half of them in here in Duat.”

She had been a little concerned about his missing sibling but hadn’t felt the need to actively pursue the other.  “You’re saying that half of their souls are stuck here.  In the Duat.  Why?”

“The accident that claimed the lives of their mother and younger sister took their lives as well. While I am sure you know how difficult it is to return souls from Duat, twins are… a special case. They can be bound back together if enough energy remains. It was a coincidence that I came across them as they clung to life. They were small. Fragile. They reminded me of my own children.”

“So you saved them essentially.  Put them back together and brought them back to life.”  She understood where the other was coming from.  The compassion and pity he must have felt for the twins.  “That’s why they see things that others don’t, with or without magic.  Because there souls are all mixed up in this.”  She gestured with one hand to everything around them.

He nodded. “But to them, it would be seen as a betrayal. They miss their mother. Their sister. I have often heard Lion praying and pleading to trade places with them. Both boys feel as if they have been cheated out of a family by remaining alive. I know they will understand that they are allowed to live for themselves when they are older… but for now, the knowledge that they were allowed to live while their loved ones had no choice would be crushing for them.”

“It will always hurt.  That is the nature of truth sometimes.  But I agree that waiting until they are more mature and emotionally stable is better in the long run. So I’ll keep my silence.  Can’t imagine what kind of mess this made for your comrades.  Perhaps this is why Anubis is so hard on you.” She finally took a small sip of wine.  “As for their job, you’re little ones… are they the only ones?  I’m assuming the other parent is out of the picture.”  She had no idea who might be interested in the God of Chaos but when reading the myths of gods one found parenthood to be… not their strongest suit.  Except for perhaps Isis and Horus.  That seemed to go well until he got older, fought his uncle and… cut off her head.

Yeah she was ending that train of thought now.

“They are not the only ones who watch my children, but I am rather fond of them. The little shadow tends to remind me of my own little children, especially in temperament and serpentine quality. I have no sons, I would be happy to call him mine.”

“Ah, yes. My wife. I suppose you could say she never quite... took to parenting. Never found the motherly instinct inside of herself. I do wonder if she can even tell our daughters apart some days.” He shrugged lightly, though the subject was clearly a sore one for him. “It is what it is.”
