It is necessary that the following words should be indelibly engraved upon our hearts: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31). These words should guide our heart during any interaction with another person, whether he comes to us or we to him, whether we have to do some work for him or give him anything, or simply to converse with him. Bear in your heart the words "love him as yourself," and wage a constant inner warfare to fulfil these life-giving words of our Lord.

Furthermore, love every man as yourself. Do not wish him anything that you would not wish for yourself. Think, feel for him just as you would think and feel for yourself; do not wish to see in him anything that you do not wish to see in yourself; do not let your memory keep in it any evil done to you by others, just as you would like the evil done by you to be forgiven by others. Do not intentionally imagine, either in yourself or in another, anything sinful or impure. Believe others to be as well-intentioned as yourself. In general, if you do not see clearly that they have evil intentions, do unto them as you would to yourself, or at the very least do not do unto them as you would not do unto yourself. If you do all this, then you will see what you will acquire in your heart, what peace, what blessedness! You will be in heaven before heaven, in heaven on earth before the eternal heaven. "For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21), says the Lord. "He who abides in love," teaches the apostle, "abides in God, and God in him." (1 John 4:16).
