What Success Joined with Happiness looks like
I just got off the phone with my 1:00 executive coaching appointment, the owner and President of a substantial property management company. He attracts new business like nobody I’ve ever seen; people just wanting in on deals with him, giving him huge properties to manage.
Today we talked about why he is such a magnet for money and good business deals, and here’s a story that tells the tale.
Three months ago, there was a very bad storm in his city, and a large tree fell squarely on a house his company rented out and maintained for the owners.
The renters escaped injury, but when my client tried to contact the owners about repairing the house, they had disappeared.
A week later, they still haven’t returned his calls, and the renters are threatening to sue my client’s management company because they are in limbo with a damaged house they can’t live in.
They are very upset, and it’s a tense situation, full of potentially bad outcomes, right? We can imagine the mess that might ensue.
My client said to me today, however, “I know that the owners are hiding out because they’re scared that they don’t have the money to fix the house. They are paralyzed by that fear.
In the meantime, I’m going to authorize the repair work on the house so the tenants get taken care of and get moved back in. I know, sooner or later, that these good people who own the house will contact me, and we’ll work out how they pay me back for the repairs.”
I asked him, “Have you done this before, and have you ever been taken advantage of?”
“I work things out like this a lot”, he said, “and only twice have I been stiffed. Once it was for forty thousand dollars, but my job isn’t just to put renters together with owners. My job is to fulfill people’s needs in ways that make them really happy and make a difference. Having a home is a very emotional thing, and people need to feel secure and happy about anything to do with their homes.”
No need to wonder now why this man is so successful. No need at all.

2. Praise someone. Actually, get in the habit of praising all your people when they do good things. Some business owners get gruff with me when I advise this and say, “Why should I praise them; they’re just doing their job?” Yes, they are, but recognition for work well done is as important to workers as the pay they put in their pockets. Without it, they are apt to go find a job that pays well where the boss doesn’t take them for granted.
3. Limit criticism. Criticism—telling people what they do wrong—can be very corrosive and alienating. This is especially true if criticism is delivered in front of others. So the next time someone makes a bonehead move, pull them aside for a private little coaching chat. Now, good leaders don’t put people down, or yell at them. A good rule is: hate the problem, but respect the person. “What in H— were you thinking?” is about the person, and it’s usually a high decibel question. “What can we do about this?” is a good coaching question, if delivered respectfully, and invites the person into solving the problem with you.

The Pursuit of Happiness, Redefined
The right to pursue happiness as stated in the Declaration of Independence is usually interpreted today as the right to go after whatever would make us feel happy, but that is not what the Framers of the document meant by happiness.
A “state of well-being is closer to the Founder’s definition of happiness as it was understood in their time. The Framers defined happiness-as-well-being to include one’s physical and emotional needs being met, but they believed that happiness has moral and spiritual elements as well. Happiness wasn’t just about meeting your own needs; you also needed to be moral and spiritual out in the world and take part in community life.
This part of the Declaration might have been clearer if it had been stated as, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain Inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of well-being.”
