a list of things i can't believe. july 6 2022. aka life updates.
i can't believe i graduated in three years and moved from the west coast to nyc! the bitter part about this is that i didn't intend to graduate early and did it for financial reasons. the past year or so has been hard financially. being independent has been difficult, but also a period of growing.
i can't believe that i'm 20 and somehow have a big boy adult job. that feels illegal.
i can't believe that i'm surrounded by so many friends and that i've been able to find community at college :)
i can't believe that i have such a kind, caring, and loving girlfriend <3 i can't believe i've gone to therapy. that i learned and uncovered so much about myself. and that i'll go back soon to figure out some more things.
i can't believe that i managed to get away from my family. that was an unhealthy relationship, and that i realized that they were abusive.
i can't believe i've gone to therapy. that i learned and uncovered so much about myself. and that i'll go back soon to figure out some more things.
i can't believe this is a new chapter.
i can believe that i'm going to take it on!! but also i'm so scared of everything. let's see how it goes :)
omg hi everybody how’re things
DO IT FOR HER
(her being you )
some things i’ve learned while studying in quarantine
drink more water instead of more coffee.
weekly goals are bullshit. set yourself 3-day goals. you’ll be less laid-back.
don’t just mindlessly stare at words. before you start studying, know your approach to it. have a plan.
summarizing the concept in your own words is the key part of taking notes. don’t just copy things down, convert them into your own way of talking, your own vocabulary, no matter how dumb and unprofessional it sounds.
don’t let the “studyblr aesthetic” fool you. studying doesn’t have to be pretty. summaries and notes can be messy as long as they’re comprehensible. you can always rewrite and reorganize them later. (honestly, you better do. and you better keep them.)
don’t throw away the papers you’ve solved your problems in. staple them to the fucking textbook. you need to see them constantly. cause you’ll need reminders of how far you’ve came, when you’re feeling discouraged.
don’t be an armchair analyst for your issues. if you have an idea then act on it.
remember: the exact point where it becomes difficult, is where your growth begins. take a deep breath, and try to focus on the paragraph in front of you.
get off your high horse and understand that if you’re a zero, you won’t go to 100 in a couple of days. first, you’ll need to reach 30, then from 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 90. nobody is 100 everyday. that happens very rarely.
you need to have fun everyday. you need to have peaceful time every single day. even on exam night. especially on exam night, actually. so make sure you’ve studied enough so you can have some time to yourself.
once you’re on a roll and in need of some challenge to stay on track, start writing down your studying hours. tell yourself you’re not allowed to do less than 80% of what you did yesterday. whatever the hell it was, even just one hour. so if yesterday you really studied for like, say 8 hours, today your goal is to study for at least 6 and a half hours. if you can’t keep up with that, make it 70%, or 60%.
be forgiving of yourself. be kind to yourself. even if you bounced back and lost your streak. start again. as slowly as you did before. take your time. it’s okay, you were there once you can get there again.
self help comic yes i cried when i thought of this and drew it immediately
be poetic. if you find the way the light falls through your window and onto your bedroom wall pretty, write about it. call it soft and golden as sunlit honey. if it makes you glad to be alive then it’s not silly. you look for the beauty of things, be proud of that. say the heavy rain is kissing you. write about the glow of the moon, the dancing of flowers. make your world magical. collect your metaphors and treasure them.
i have a final in 8 hours i don’t know shit i just watched a lot of tiktoks and upped my clash royale ranking by 500 trophies
i am afraid
tbt elementary school end of summer when you found out who your classmates were going to be by looking at the lists posted outside
also looking to see if you were with all your friends / crush
gonna fuck around and start saying i DO condone the actions of my problematic fav fictional characters
i’m dropping into tumblr again for the first time in awhile and damn it’s always fun to look at your about page and see who you thought you were a few months ago
Charlotte Brontë — Jane Eyre
“But [Tumblr’s] value, of course, is more than just what it isn’t, and what it points away from. Despite all the drama and discourse lurking in its corners, it’s easy to make your own Tumblr life as simple and as happy as you want it to be. There are no algorithmic threats lurking around every corner, no onslaught of promoted posts from politicians or influencers. More than anything else, Tumblr in 2020 is a self-sustaining ecosystem. It’s a semi-sealed and increasingly fertile terrarium, a nigh-impossible perpetual-motion machine of a platform going productively psychotic in its isolation.”
— @areyougonnabe, “The Ever-Mutating Life of Tumblr Dot Com”
This article actually really explains why I’m still here after 10 years.
“But for us long-time users, it’s home. We’re all still [here], getting weirder and weirder, mutating all the time into new and as-of-yet unknown forms. The creativity of Tumblr visible from second-hand glimpses on other platforms is only the tip of an iceberg that encompasses enormous amounts of perpetual creative energy, generated by the affordances of the platform’s much-loved functions, traditions, and communities.… And may it ever be thus.”
no one tells you how much of life takes practice. not just writing, painting, running, singing, etc, but practicing how to make friends. how to make the right ones. getting practiced at how to be a good friend, a good sibling, a good person. practice identifying when people haven’t earned that. learning to recognize your right to rage and, eventually, how to offer mercy. so much of life is muscle memory, and i’ve begun to realize there are so many more parts of ourselves to flex and stretch and strengthen than those we’re taught in anatomy lessons
ok so apparently not a lot of ppl know to do this when ‘reviewing notes’ but
look at section of notes
look away from section of notes
explain section of notes
check if explanation was correct
identify mistakes/gaps
recite correction for each mistake/gap
repeat until no mistakes
gotta practice recalling the info instead of just acknowledging its correctness
Summer day sketching.
I feel like a lot of people have put immense pressure on themselves to accomplish/achieve something big during this quarantine so they don't "waste" time.
So many posts about how guilty they'll feel if they don't use this time to finally catch up on back-work, clean their house, organize, work, work, work.
Y'all need to remember that we're experiencing a global crisis, and to some degree, I think arguably a global trauma.
Right now, everything is uncertain, the future is vague, and the world is scary. We are all already under so much unprecedented pressure. Pressure to provide for ourselves and others, to stay safe, to keep others safe, etc. etc.
The LAST thing we need is to set ultimatums for our schedules and punish ourselves for not writing a damn book or reorganzing the garage all with the weight of Global Pandemic Crisis weighing on our minds and lives.
The truth is, no one needs to get a damn thing done during all of this except what concerns public health and services.
You don't need to clean the attic. You don't need to reply to all of your emails.
If doing those things makes you feel better, great! Have fun! But if they've become a tool for guilting yourself into being miserably "productive" in these trying times,
Give yourself a break.
