lore notes:

they are heads of the Ring Knights - a faction found on the principle that the Elden Ring also command the stars (it's a real dialogue from the game's announcement trailer in 2019 btw), this sets them apart from the belief of Carian Royalty / Raya Lucaria Academy

their sorceries scale with faith instead of intelligence (Godwyn's Prince of Death staff is also deemed heretical by the Academy cuz it scales with Faith lol)

answer directly to Marika

the inner circle (Ring Knights) rarely changes its members as it's the hardest to get into, but the outer group (Ivory Knights), comprise of champions who win in the Erdtree duels, so there's a yearly rotation of them

Raimes is the main Captain and spends most of his time in Leyndell, while Mirai (who is vice-Captain) travels across the land to oversee situations in various states

after the Elden Ring was shattered and Marika disappeared, this group left Leyndell to go find Marika, not participating in the Shattering nor pledging their allegiance to any of the Demigods. They never stop believing that one day their star of the sea will come back and thus, await her return.

thinking about how dandadan is a coming of age story/metaphor for puberty

and how for okarun it’s abt navigating manhood and his budding sexual/romantic feelings, but for momo it’s abt learning how you are perceived once u become a woman and learning to protect yourself from those who wish harm on u (the most unfortunate part of female puberty 💔)

Gonna soul dump for a second:

To add on to the metaphor for momo, it’s smth all the female cast members embody in different ways. For Aira, she uses a cutesy act to hide how brazen and honestly tomboyish she is, and we see how being outcast by her peers after admitting to making up lies about momo rlly affected her bc to her, that act was her shield and how she got what she wanted. But once she got the Silky powers after empathizing with Silky who laid her soul bare to her, and Aira’s friends were able to reconcile with her, she became a lot more confident and truer to herself. Aira and Momo are quite similar in that way, that they don’t take shit from anyone and won’t hesitate to speak up, and can be soft and tough. that’s what makes them stand out as really powerful female leads in the shonen genre. And their whole “female bickering” thing is actually written really carefully. Like yeah it’s pretty silly and funny when they start fighting over okarun’s attention or being team leader, but it’s the way they don’t hold it against each other seriously and really respect each other (they’d only admit that at gunpoint. Actually—) that to me depicts a dynamic female friendship that is very refreshing and pretty realistic.

And don’t even get me started on turbo granny’s everything. A whole spirit dedicated to protecting girls who were victims of abuse. And she steals men’s genitals if they dare enter the safe space she’s created for these girls. Then a BOY is the one who becomes the holder of her power and he uses it to protect a girl from aliens that are about to sa her. The world perceived turbo granny as some evil spirit who stole dicks for no reason without understanding her motive. And she doesn’t care if the world understands or not, she doesn’t care that ppl get upset with her and her actions. This is how she protects herself and protects the girls that the world failed to protect when they were alive.

Also can we just talk about Seiko. She’s the baddest bitch everrr and does not give two fuuuckkss about how she presents herself. Yes she’s a grandmother. Yes she doesn’t look a day over 30. Yes she will whoop your ass with her baseball bat while casually smoking a cigarette. Yes she acts aloof but she cares so much for Momo and is very protective of her and will make that known. She’s kinda hands off with Momo so she can make mistakes and learn from them but when shit gets serious she will protect Momo no matter what because while she wants Momo to have the tools to protect herself once she’s a fully grown woman, she also won’t expose her to more harm than necessary.

Oh and KOUKI. That one’s very self explanatory. I felt that, her arc was wowwww gut punch wtf (vamola peeking around the corner like💀)

Okay enough I feel like I deviated from the original point like thirty times but I just get passionate when talking about dandadans themes 🫩

this made me realize the guys back stories aren't as fleshed out; we don't know too much about jiji, kinta, and especially okarun. I am fully expected to be hit by okarun's backstory someday though. (To be fair Airas and Momos' haven't been completely revealed yet but still feels like there was more info than the guys).

the work Tatsu puts into fleshing out female characters (even "side" characters) is so impressive and heartwarming because for the longest time I have not been able to find good female representation in anime. They've always been 2 dimensional (badum ch) or fitting into a certain mold. As someone who's been tired as hell about anime stereotypes for YEARS, I love dandadan so much for not only approaching things in a different way, but also in a different light that actually sheds on real issues occurring today. Everyone is so humanized and genuine this series has made a serious impact on me and my love for storytelling and characters
