Theory to the 3rd DHMIS
So I got this really good theory as submission:
I’m using the submit form because I have a theory as to why DHMIS3 wasn’t as outright grotesque as the other two: it’s basically an extended version of what TVTropes calls a ‘Hope Spot’.
Yellow’s been through some horrible stuff, but at least he can depend on his friends. But when one of them accidentally upsets him, he doesn’t know where to turn. That’s when the bug spots him. Note how his song initially sounds like it belongs at the end of something, in both its tune and its lyrics. He’s promising love and answers, and Yellow, being vulnerable and in need, accepts the offer. He doesn’t even realize that this is the third Teacher. Rhe lesson is this: a person’s need for love can make them vulnerable to hurt and manipulation.
Addendum to my previous submission: the reason the bug’s lesson wasn’t as horrible as the other two was because of its ‘constructedness’. Sketchbook and the others lost control of their creativity. Tony, as Time’s avatar, is a cold, dispassionate force of nature that will one day get you, no matter who you are. The bug’s cult, however, is made to ease people in and to never seem overtly horrible. The cult doesn’t want to SEEM harmful; no cult does. Hmm. I’m still thinking about this, but this is enough for now.
One last thought from the guy who wrote those two theory submissions: this episode was targeted at the Yellow Guy, who's obviously receptive to cute, fluffy imagery. So what would lessons targeted at the other two guys be like - Bird, with his contant asking of questions, and Red Guy, who doesn't feel strongly about anything ever? The last lesson had better be a horrifying gaze into the abyss, though.
A last note from me: Thank you for the submission, I'm always so happy when people submit something and it's great that someone gave the new dhmis so much thought!
