The Two Brothers, watercolor and ink (1920) Elenore Abbott (American, 1875–1935) created the illustration The Two Brothers for the 1920 Scribner's Sons edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales. Applying the Art Nouveau aesthetic, she depicts Princess Rosette on the dragon mountain, awaiting being sacrificed to the seven-headed beast. A young hunter later arrives to rescue her from the monster.

Abbott used watercolor and ink to produce fine lines and atmospheric washes. Such flowing, decorative forms brought old, emotional stories into a modern visual language. Loc. Private Collection. Dim. 35.6 x 27.9 cm (14 x 11 in.).
