I'm really high, and I just finished Stone Butch Blues, and it's pissing me off. I resent the way people use this book almost exclusively as ammunition for discourse, and I hate the way it's misunderstood because of it. I respect it so much as a coming of age story obsessed with personal myth making and sentimentality. I'm so desperately sad thinking about things perpetually moving and changing. I'm so angry at all of the feelings I'm having because of this book. I want to live in a world where people give the same things significance as I do. Not everyone, but anyone

If things are allowed to be complicated, then I can't just be mad anymore. I feel like I'll explode if I let myself process my own experience in a way that's cathartic and natural. Hurting for things that won't ever come back, seeing people and being seen in return, the constant maintenance of myself required to do those things in good faith every day, I miss it all. I haven't had it since I got sick. I want it back. If things are allowed to be complicated, I have to go back to feeling betrayed and hurt instead of just over it. I'm mad at my lack of ability, and others lack of willingness, to live the emotional myth of this story in practice. I don't want to be sick and over it, I don't want to reserve strength. I want to be in my 50's, just as raw about everything as I was the day it happened. I want to feel like Jess at the end, and I want it to be unfair and tragic and beautiful. I'm so angry I'm so emotional over this fucking book. I didn't even like a lot of it. Fuck. Read it again.

Maybe I'll write more thoughts when I'm sober, if I don't delete this outright. Good book.
