Wow im so glad i found your tumblr :') im 18 and have had type 1 diabetes for 6 years. I read ur page and i feel a lot better that im not alone :) just wanted to say thank you.
Aw, thanks!
about the meal-highs: it depends on when you inject. Because it normally takes 1-1,5 hours for insulin to work, you have to inject before meals to avoid highs (maybe even 15 minutes before a meal), but then it's still possible that the sugar-high comes before the moment the insulin starts working/works best. If you're still high 2 or 3 hours after the meal, I'd suggest talking to your doctor because then your carb-ratios are probably wrong.
For the anon; it helps a TON when you take your insulin before you eat. Even if you don't know exactly what you're eating, taking a few units of insulin ahead of time works really well.
I'm getting tested for type 1 diabetes tomorrow and I'm very nervous. Any advice? xx
I'm sorry I didn't answer this sooner! I was on vacation, and I've been sick the past few days. And since I'm guessing you already got tested, I'm just going to ask: how were the results?
How do you get tested for type 1 diabetes?
Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test. This blood test indicates your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. It works by measuring the percentage of blood sugar attached to hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. The higher your blood sugar levels, the more hemoglobin you'll have with sugar attached. An A1C level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates you have diabetes.
Random blood sugar test. A blood sample will be taken at a random time. Blood sugar values are expressed in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L). Regardless of when you last ate, a random blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher suggests diabetes, especially when coupled with any of the signs and symptoms of diabetes, such as frequent urination and extreme thirst.
Fasting blood sugar test. A blood sample will be taken after an overnight fast. A fasting blood sugar level less than 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) is normal. A fasting blood sugar level from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) is considered prediabetes. If it's 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests, you have diabetes.

I see a lot of people talking about pumps, and some people I guess looking down on people that don't have one. I used to have one it was ok, I had the same issues with it like most T1s do, but when I was 18 (now 26) The state of Texas decided to be an asshole and kick me off the children's medical plan because you know Type 1 diabetes only last until you are legally an adult. The price to pay for insulin and the pump supplies were so high there was no way we could afford it. So Medicaid decided to be a dick and said my dad made to much money, and well that is the only factor they take into consideration, not if you have a medical condition. Social Security were asses too, they even told me "Your not disabled you can still work." So instead of going to college like my friends got to do I had to start working in kitchens to pay for my insulin, after awhile I had to just go back injection because hey Wal-Mart sells syringes for $12.57. So I would love to have a pump, but because I have a child and work to pay rent, and other bills I make too much money according to the ass hat of a governor Rick Perry (In Texas if you make $5500+ you make too much money for Medicaid) who says "hey you work a part time job and even though you go to school full time you should pay for your own health insurance." The pump is cool don't get me wrong I was finally able to get my betus under control for the two years I had it, but it is really only a band aid, the government doesn't want to invest in a cure because shit could you imagine the loss of jobs in the health care profession if we didn't have this shit? Or all the companies that make the ever so wonderful products that keep us in a half life status. So hey you got a pump cool, don't knock someone that doesn't, support each other people! This shit tears at our mind everyday, I look at my son who just turned 4, I am in constant fear that the next time he goes for his check up that Medicaid provides for (even though I don't have it I am glad he does) the Dr. will say he has it too. Thanks for letting me rant really. I have lived in this Hell for 21 years, my wife found this and pushed me to follow it, it helps, brings up things I buried along time ago and never wanted to talk about, so thanks...kind of. So come on we all got the same problem how we choose to ride that sweet dragon insulin is up to the individual.

I had to miss a volunteer event today because of my sugars being terrible and none of my friends understand why it's such a big deal. They're all being rather mean about it and saying I use my diabetes for attention. How do I convince them otherwise?
Do anyone else's pump sites hurt so badly that you can't touch near it? It happens in most of my sites, but my blood sugars are still perfectly fine. I have the mio infusion set and I'm wondering if I should just change infusion sets completely. Any thoughts?
Okay so lately I've been seeing lots tumblretics say how they wish they didnt have diabetes, but I really dont. Being a diabetic for the past 5 years has really affected my life, good and bad but I'm so used to having diabetes now that I feel like if I didnt have it, I wouldnt really know what to do. Anyone else feel like this?
It's time for me to upgrade my pump warranty and I can either stick with the Medtronic paradigm or go with another company. I've had the Medtronic for about 5 years now and there are some issues with it that I don't like. But before I make the switch I was wondering if anyone who has the Animas Ping has had any negative experiences or issues with how that pump or company works. Thanks!
i feel like the only person who doesn't have a pump and who doesn't do carb counting...
i don't know about the carb counting, but you're definitely not the only one that doesn't use a pump. me, for instance!
For the guy who wants a bag for carrying his supplies : I like the idea of a camera bag, but I'd also suggest an x-small size Timbuk2 messenger bag. They're pretty unisex, they come in a billion colors, they're about the right size, and can also function as a camera bag. Hope he's able to find something that works for him!
