similar to how he left seoul unceremoniously, his departure from the uk also happened as sudden and quiet as the latter. maybe even more so, since now he’s a proper adult who doesn’t have to report back to his mother about his decisions and whereabouts. maybe … he left haeun behind without saying good bye.
he settles with, “jin haeun,” he simply says. “i should’ve known one way or another they’ll rope you and your family into this.”
her family.
her family’s business.
hold the fuck up. they’re a private security company —
does that mean they have access to the surveillance camera?
could this be yohan’s ticket out?
haeun was never the one to extend an olive branch. she would never extend anything, ever, if she felt that it would not benefit her in any way. she knows all too well that one wrong move would cause a rumour and everyone knows how dangerous that could be so very rarely does she do anything without weeks or even months worth of consideration. she could even count the number of people she would help with no conditions with one hand and even then, she's selective with accepting their requests.
it just so happens that the person right in front of her holds a special place in her heart and given the right amount of nostalgia, she would do just about anything (terms and conditions applied) for him, much to her brother's dismay.
but what she remembers from ok yohan at the moment was far from the nostalgia of a young girl's first crush, not when all she could think about was the years that she has not heard from him even once and the literal heartbreak that she suffered when he was not there to welcome her when she came back to the uk to visit.
although he did cross her mind from time to time, specifically that one when she had used him as an excuse to pacify her mother's worries.
"oh my god, ok yohan, is that really you?" she said as she moved to poke his arm and once she confirmed he was real. she takes a step back to fully look at him and while she had thought of giving him a hug, the reminder that she might've gone for it if only it hadn't been years since they last spoke, stopped her short. her stance morphed into a detached one, her arms crossed over her chest.
a light laugh came about her lips, a fake laugh that he might've remember her using, at the mention of her family. of course, someone like him would be on top of the latest news in cheongdam. "of course, we're to help in any way we can..." she trails off, purposefully not finishing off her sentence as it would've ended with... if it means saving our own ass.
"but i see that you're still causing trouble, as always. where the hell have you been, anyways?"

turns out that jin haeun has impeccable timing because just as he passes through the living area, he hears the bell ring, a far too familiar voice booming through the place he likes to call home. he scrambles to turn the lock and throw the door open, “ya- keep your voice down!” he scolds her, quickly glancing from one side of the hallway to the other as he pulls her inside. he’s already had to explain one failed engagement, he’d rather not have to do it again. yet it’s hard to stay mad at her when she comes bearing free food and drinks.
“at least you’ve got this part of being a good wife down.” he says as he nods towards the bags of food in her hands, nudging her to take a seat on the couch while he disappears to the kitchen to grab plates, cutlery and a couple of bottles of soju to go with the beer.
“let me guess, you can’t get this whole marriage thing out of your head either?”
jin haeun would never oppose a marriage of convenience.
that is, if she deems her soon-to-be counterpart worthy to be called her husband. she knew well enough and after spending a good amount of time observing the women of their society that if you are unable to make your own power, you marry into one. with that said, the moons were indeed a family of power and holding a position within the house of dahan was indication enough that their influence was one that rival her own family. so naturally, marrying jeongho wouldn't have been a problem and she wouldn't have to think twice when her father had relayed to her his decision.
but that's just it. she was to marry jeongho. and between the two of them, there's definitely more than one luggage to unpack when it comes to their history. if the engagement was announced during their very long relationship of six months, haeun was sure they would've been married by now. but there was a reason why they broke up in the first place. and haeun was never one to date the same guy twice.
as his door flew open, haeun lets out a loud laugh at his bewildered appearance as he ushered her inside. "what?" she asked nonchalantly, "they'll know soon enough and i bet my father's already in talks with the media as we speak."
there's no reason to be worried, she wanted to say but she knew enough to know why he was being so cautious in the first place to keep pressing his buttons. she'll save the teasing for when they were both drunk.
"wow, it's been a while since i've been here," she comments as she followed him inside and into the living room. there, she set the chicken and the beer down unto the coffee table and made herself comfortable on the couch where she sits cross-legged. "excited to marry me now, are we? i knew you've always wanted to since you already proposed to me once."
she leaned over and grabbed a can, taking a big sip and letting his question simmer in her thoughts. just because their parents had promised each other something, it doesn't erase the fact that the two of them have moved on from viewing each other romantically and they've stayed friends ever since. haeun cared for him enough to genuinely wish for him to be able to find his match, one that viewed the same sentiments of what it means to love and be loved. and haeun always expressed that she was no where near the thought of settling down.
she reached to open another can, offering it to him and only then she answered, "it was something i expected, but i won't lie that it threw me off guard when i saw in the marriage meeting. didn't you see me giving you the warning signal?" the meeting itself was nothing but a hazy memory but she did remember her eyes widening every now and again when their gazes met.
"it bothers me that i'm not your first fiancée though."
her beauty is flawless 💐
true love never dies, just forgotten...you know, for three months. w/ @4625in
it was supposed to be a fun evening, but of course, one phone call was all it took for her night to take a turn towards misery. her hand stopped midstroke across the canvas, holding back the urge to throw her paint brush across the room. her white walls didn't need another splash of paint given that it wouldn't even be called 'white ' anymore from the amount of times she'd flung her brush in the air.
the endless ringing from the next room was making her blood pressure spike up even if she has had no medical history of it running in the family, but she swears that if she had, she'd be on a fast track to the emergency room.
haeun rolled her eyes at the thought of her blood pressure, finally getting up on her feet and trudged towards the sitting room where she had kept her phone. she thought she had put in on silent before starting to work. and it was, yet it was her father that was calling and he made sure that he was on the important contacts list so that she'd always answer his call.
dad ♡ [2 missed calls]
she turns back to the unfinished canvas sitting in the middle of the other room and with a sigh looks back at her phone.
"hi dad! you called?"
...
"ms. jin, could you please tell us what you were doing at mrs. yang's time of death?"
the interrogation room was cold. although, she was sure that the police made it so that they would be intimidated and really thought it would work. but there are things far scarier than the police. for example, the ravaging gossips of cheongdam that could tear one to pieces. haeun had a passing thought that perhaps that's also what happened to mrs. yang. devoured by words and drowned in stares.
haeun recalled to the police her day before the party had started and how she initially had no plans of attending, but her father had told her to come in the last minute. although she didn't end up staying for more than two hours and went home after a couple flutes of champagne. she remembered the party to be extremely bland and that she never cross paths with the yang's matriarch.
"thank you for cooperating with us, ms. jin. if you would allow us to ask one more question," the officer started and for a second haeun held her breath. she knew what he was going to ask next. "protego security was in charge of the security for that night, we would like to cooperate with protego to check if there were any breaches."
haeun smiled, nodding slightly. "of course, officer. protego was indeed part of the various security teams that night, although, i'd have to check our records first if we have failed to protect those we were assigned to..."
vague. was it too vague?
"...and i believe you would have to speak with my father, as i am merely an apprentice."
with no panic in her tone and no hurriedness in her stride, the police had left her off the hook with a promise to get back to them with useful information. she nods her head to the officers a sign of good bye and as she exits the door, her hand reaches up to her necklace to grasp its chain lightly (a nervous tell) as she resists the urge to ball her fist.
haeun had to tread lightly, knowing that one wrong move could have their family fall from grace. she had been so focused on getting out of the station and confront her dad that she didn't notice that the waiting room was full of familiar faces, as if the party from that night had continued in the station, including the one person she told her mother that she needed to find as if to pursue 'true love'. the same person that she didn't bother looking for because she knew that he probably didn't want to be found just yet.
"no way..."
mother must feel sorry for me. w/ @mxnition
trust in jin seonho to always come in with a surprise.
she thought that her morning would go towards the same routine, secluded in her studio to waste her time away in tranquility. but her father had come in after a single knock and told her that her husband has been decided. she had laughed then, at her father's face, thinking that he'd finally gone insane as she never thought that the day would come so soon. then again, putting trust in her father was the real gamble to begin with, knowing that it would result in consequences that would've have allowed anyone to remain unscathed. even if it meant putting his precious daughter on the line just to use as a pawn in solidifying his own legacy. what he didn't know that his daughter would only use this a pedestal to rise above him.
haeun had always thought that she would be the exception. she had her father's love and support when her own older brothers didn't. she knew that he had always treasured her, she just didn't expect that he was keeping her in such a precious chest just to hand someone the key. she thought that she had her freedom, that she could easily slip through her father's hands when her brothers were so tightly choked by them. but to him, children are nothing but merely collateral for his disposal.
maybe her mother was right.
"mother must feel sorry for me," she mumbled as she fixes her hair into a bun, just about ready to head out. she took the time to look at herself on the mirror. the dark grey sweatpants rolled up by her ankles, the navy sweater that she just threw over her head without a care. surely, it didn't look like she would be on her way to see her fiancé. the same fiancé that she had known since she was three years old. how fate seemed to play tricks on them. with one last tired look on the mirror, she grabs a pack of beer and the chicken she just got delivered and headed down to her chauffeur. there was no way she could drive with the shock still in her system. that was the reason why she's going out to drink in the first place.
by the time she got to his place, she was already exhausted in thinking about everything that needs to be done, if it was going to even happen. but that's exactly what she was here for. after ringing his bell, she tilts her head to the camera, raising the contents in her hands. right, just another thursday.
"hey, moon jeongho. open up! we have a wedding to plan."

thanks for being patient ♡
MS. JIN HAEUN, can you give us a quick rundown of what you did during 2M's networking party, if you attended it? Please detail your whereabouts during her time of death.
there were more than two pairs of eyes that was examining her every move. from the one-way glass to her left and the security camera that was pointed at her on her right, haeun could feel it. everyone was focused on her body language and was now waiting for her to speak, hoping that she would slip up or at least accidentally spill something. the police were desperately tying to dig up anything from anywhere at this point.
it was her first time being in a police station and she never would've thought that she would end up being in one in the first place. her father has many connections within the force but for a crime as big as this one, it was not something that could be solved with a nudge on the back or an off handed envelope containing hush money. of course, there was no reason to be guilty. the only thing that was keeping her from saying anything rash was one thing: shame. protego security was in charge of 2M's networking party and now someone was dead. the agitation was slowly setting in.
haeun sat back on the cold seat, crossing her leg over the other and folding her hands on her lap (to stop it from nervously trembling). she makes eye contact with the officer that had asked her the question and she took a bit of time to reply, choosing her words wisely.
"of course, officer," she said and started recounting the night of the party. "i was late to the party, mostly because i wasn't planning on attending it in the first place since my brothers were already going, so you see, it took me a bit of time finding what to wear." haeun tucked her hair behind her ear, breaking eye contact with the man and looking down at the table separating them, faking an embarrassed blush. "and i would've gotten something custom if i knew i was to attend the party, alas, all i had to wear was a black chanel dress--a classic, if you asked me."
