I want more Ryland being boisterous, who's really good at taking charge. The guy FLAUNTS being "Doctor-Captain Ryland Grace" to Stratt. He WENT FISHING in a PLANET'S ATMOSPHERE WHILE EVERYTHING WAS ON FIRE. HE GOT HIMSELF FIRED BECAUSE HE POPPED OFF AT THE MOUTH. HE HAS AN EGO. GIVE IT TO HIM.

I want more Simon, who had his ego beat the fuck out of him, and is actively learning to try and gain that back again, because he used to be a prick on Eden, and now he's scared he'll turn back into that monster if he lets his self control go. Scared something Bad Will Happen either to him or because of him. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

I want more Simon who thinks Ryland is a delusional liar vs. Ryland who can clearly see the signs of psychosis in Simon, and he might just be right. (I love you, Losing Streak by AO3 user rosysoleil)

I want Simon who has been trained to body pain and yet still fucking cries like a bitch (because he was, and he does). Simon is NOT stoic. HE IS NOT. Simon's got a pokerface and it's terrible.

I want more meet-ugly Punch Your Lights Out While Squealing Like A Bitch Ryland Grace vs. K.O.'d By A Whimpy White Guy Simon, who's more apologetic about the incident than Ryland is.

LOOK AT RYLAND'S ARM. LOOK. DUDE HAS A SLEEPER BUILD. It might be an accident (or totally justified self-defense) but, as stated by @anne-jordan in this post, Ryland "It's been a while since I've taken pills from strangers" Grace would be swinging back.

I want more BITCH FOR BITCH Simon and Rocky who think arguing with each other is fun, because Simon's sense of humor involves being mean (being rowdy with the boys on Eden was common) and Rocky is so with it.

I want more "sexuality crisis" Ryland Grace who thought he was straight vs. "dude labels went out of style like 230 years ago" True Neutral Future-Man Simon. SIMON'S THE CHILL ONE. SIMON DON'T GAF

I want more "forced proximity doesn't mean we have to fuck" stories!!! Turn that trope on its head!!!

I want more sexually complicated/aromantic-but-sex-positive Simon that ISN'T because of his trauma!!! Maybe he's just Like That, and that's okay!

Also, hey guys, guess what? Simon can just be a straight dude. These can just be straight dudes. Best buds. Guys. Healthy male friendships. HEALTHY MALE FRIENDSHIPS. It doesn't have to be yaoi all the time.

Incredibly self indulgent things I think would be cool to see in more bloodymary fics/fanart 

Simon not always being the angry one!! I feel like some fan content tends to infantilize Grace as just some innocent soft boy who would never hurt a fly while also stereotyping Simon as angry and grumpy and threatening 24/7? Which is kinda odd to me. Grace canonically lost his shit so hard he called one of his colleagues a “staggering waste of carbon” and got kicked out of academia. He starts breaking shit when things go wrong (him throwing the trash can(?) when he finds that astrophage are water based and punching the screen during the taumoeba leak). When Grace realizes he’s going to be forced on the mission he shoves a chair and climbs the walls and runs for his life and still keeps fighting even when pinned. If during their first encounter Simon attacks and threatens Grace because he’s (understandably) scared and confused and out of it let Grace fight a bit dirty!! Just for a little bit!! He’ll feel bad about it later but for now he doesnt know who this guy is or what he can do and he’s SCARED. FOR HIS LIFE. (Also admittedly inspired by this post) 

Simon helping Grace get ideas for his experiments and theories. We can reasonably assume that Grace is more well versed in science and academics than Simon is, but Simon still shows a great deal of intelligence and resourcefulness throughout Iron Lung; mapping out the caves on his own, opening the crawlspace with the first aid scissors, using his harness to keep the life vest attached to the black box. Grace is incredibly smart and scientific minded, yes, but throughout phm we still see him needing help from others who can think in more out of the box ways than him. Like when Carl suggests to just “put the box in another box.” It’s such a seemingly simple and not at all complicated solution, so much so that it doesn’t even come to Grace’s mind at first. But it's undeniably genius! And then later when Rocky suggests that they just sit in Adrian’s orbit in order to stay in the Petrova line, something Grace didn’t think of. I feel like simon could fulfill a similar role! Let them all do group science projects together.

More Rocky!! Ok this is probably the most self indulgent one. I know it’s kinda silly to ask for more of a character in content about a ship that doesnt (necessarily) involve said character. But like. This is my post so idc. After the events of Iron Lung Simon has radiation poisoning times like a bazillion (in addition to Every Other Disease). Rocky’s crew died from radiation and Rocky probably spent those entire 40 years alone thinking he was useless for not being able to fix it. And now Simon is going through something that not only Rocky can’t fix, but that grace is probably going to have a hard time fixing (if at all) as well! I feel like there’s angst potential there. That’s gotta suck ass. Also Rocky plays such an important role in Grace’s development and the narrative itself that I feel like he should play an important role here too?

And while I'm here more Ava and Stratt too. That moment when you both have traumatic experiences with women named a/eva who sent you off to die. What if when Grace mentions Eva for just a moment Simon thinks he's talking about HIS Ava. Or vice versa. Also if those men get to make out about their joint trauma together then the women should too. Amen. Go my trolley operators!!

i've always wondered what human speech would look like visually in the POV of eridians in the same way eridian speech is written as music notes in the book and my favorite version of it i've seen in fics is when words are written as phonetics in rocky's POV :-) oh and also that one post about rocky and grace figuring out random words they can say in the other's language

I know someone probably already stated this already, but… Simon can be way more than just some angry, irritated, and impulsive traumatized guy. I am not pointing fingers at anyone, I just wanna say it. I am seeing more bloodymary content, while it is great to see—I highly recommend to rewatch or watch Iron Lung when it comes out on digital to get a sense of Simon’s personality! I think Simon is a very complex and interesting person, he is more than just “the Butcher.”

For example: Simon can also be determined, apologetic, guilty, regretful, remorseful, deeply empathetic, terrified in a less angry way, selfless, protective, hopeful, and pretty smart to survive so long in the SM-18. And just human. He has humanity deep within him. He can be loving too!!

And a reminder—It seems like that Simon doesn’t ever want to be angry, it was just the harsh, dangerous situations he was put in to make him react so negatively towards the situation for most of his life.

I think the core difference between the book and movie versions of ryland grace is that, while both are desperately afraid of taking action, book!grace's fear stems from the fact that he doesn't want to be hurt, whereas as for movie!grace it's that he genuinely thinks he's incapable of doing anything meaningful.

compare how they react to remembering they were forced onto the ship:

in the book, he stands around in numb ashamed shock at his cowardice for a minute before deciding, against rocky's better judgement, that they should voluntarily subject the hail mary to a six g force again to get the lab equipment up and running instead of just waiting eleven days to get back to the blip-A, and it hurts him a lot and he ends up passing out from it. he locates the problem in his memory as being that he was too caught up in concern for his own wellbeing, so he tries to counterbalance it by opting to do something bizarrely personally risky so they can get back to work more quickly. his refrain in his memories is "I don't want to die."

in the film, he remembers it all and then he's back to his old self when saying his farewells to rocky. his emotional vulnerability is gone, his walls are back up, he tries to leave without saying a real goodbye before rocky continues the conversation, and he rejects being called "brave." all his weeks of learning to do the scary thing so he can care for someone and be cared about are just gone. he locates the problem in his memory as being that he as a person is simply not brave; he lacks the gene for it and isn't capable of real accomplishment; he'd thought he could grow and change and he was wrong. his refrain in his memories is "I can't do it."
