I'm listening to the Old Gods of Appalachia which is a genuinely wonderful podcast.

however

I feed horses once a week in the evenings. It's fine and dandy, there are enough barn lights that I rarely get spooked. It's also quite deep into the mountains, and right now, it's full dark when I feed. The barn is set well away from any houses or roads.

It's been very windy here and the barn has a lovely tin roof. When the horses aren't in the circle of light cast by the barn lights, their eyes gleam. It's especially striking when I've got my headlamp on.

I was minding my own business and wrapping up the grain feedings when the wind picked up again and made the doors tremble and all the hanging bug traps creak and sway. There was what sounded like a magpie calling from the tack room and I very nearly opened the door to check things out.

I fought my white person in a horror movie instincts. I didn't open the door, I called a friend and moved to the hay barn. The sounds largely stopped, except for the rustling of the trees and the rattling of the tin roof.

I'm home now, taking a hot bath. I may need to find a different podcast to listen to at the barn.
