there are three other people who get input here but my thinking is, like…

if our kid wants to be anything like us then they should go for it. i’d be happy. but if our kid wants to say “eat trash, parents, i never want to talk to you again” and go have a totally normal purple life with normal purple friends? i think they should be able to do that too

obviously that’d be fucking heartbreaking but it’s kind of…the price of admission, imo. “you get to leave” should be a thing that every relationship’s got built in.

[@picking-up-shards] I think the difference is that the anon wanted you to kill yourself, which is bad, while my therapist wanted me to get better, which is good. It sounds like maybe the problem was that your therapist wasn't patient enough. Mine never accused me of trying to stay sick even when I relapsed (even though it was my fault), he just talked through with me how important it was to stay on the wagon, and gave me strategies to stop the wrong scary thoughts before I did anything bad.

I don’t see any evidence for that in the book.  Nobody shows Epsilons being forced to work, or says there can’t be any on the islands.  They may not get to debate the Human Condition with a World Controller before being sent off, but there’s nothing in the book saying that disobedient Epsilons are treated poorly.

There is a mention of Re-Conditioning Centres, and obviously our bias is to assume that means torture chambers, but… I feel like that’s the easy way out, as a reader.  If you think that the happiness of Brave New World is just a cover for misery beneath the surface, then it’s easy to declare it wrong.  I’d rather think about the much harder question of assuming their uncanny, hollow-feeling form of happiness is real, and asking if it’s good then.
