âYea, I know.â She looked down and touched her leg as she was still shivering.
Dick tossed her his jacket. It made him feel constrained, and that was the last thing he needed right now. âHere. Youâre shaking.â
Kori was never happier to see Dick in her life. And that was saying something considering his presence at any given moment could make her extremely happy.Â
Under any other circumstances, Kori would be absolutely mortified for not only being sick but also crying in front of the one person she did her best to only show the best of her to. But none of that was running through her mind because Dick was okay and that was more important to her than any embarrassment. She wasnât sure if it was relief or seeing him in person bringing a fresh set of tears to her eyes. Before she could even think against it, she turned around and threw her arms around his neck and buried her face into his shoulder, desperate to feel him close to prove to her mind that she didnât lose the ones she loved. Not again.Â
âI was so scared,â she began, âRaven, Gar, Victor, Katrina, you,â she breathed the last word, barely making it out as the awful vision came back to her mind. âLike my parents, like Ryan, happening again.â The words kept spilling out of her mouth in fragments, like actual word vomit a movie she had once watched with Raven had said. Kori knew she should pull away, put on a brave face so that Dick wouldnât think of her as so weak, but she kept holding on. She hoped against everything she wasnât being a bother. The solace he gave her, even with no words, was more than she could get from anyone else.Â
He was worried for a few seconds as she began to cry once again, but it all flew out the window when she wrapped her arms around him. It only just occurred to him how strong she usually was, and it only just made the situation more alarming to him. After a few seconds, he slowly slid his arms around her smaller frame, letting her cry it out. His heart broke with each sob as this was something he never wanted her to go through. She was such a happy person the majority of the time, so it killed him to see her this way. Still, he would have preferred her to let all of her emotions out instead of bottle them up inside as he usually did. It almost made him forget his own dream. Almost.
As she started rambling about what sheâd seen, he held her just that little bit tighter, wanting her to know he was there. He never wanted her to feel alone again, and he could only imagine what she had gone through. At the back of his mind, he knew it wasnât just for her, that he was holding her close for his sake too, but he ignored that. It didnât matter who needed who most.
âSsh, sh, I know, but itâs over now,â he said, lifting a hand to run it through her hair in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. âIâm not going anywhere, okay? I promise.â He meant it. If he could have it his way, he would never leave her side ever again, and for now he ignored any nagging thoughts at the back of his mind telling him that was impossible.
âI swear, these people are really slow on giving information.â
âMaybe they donât have any. Still, youâd think theyâd have something by now.â
âYea, Iâm sure everyone having a nightmare and the school keeping us here is nothing to worry aboutâ
âWell, Iâm trying to remain positive. It could have been worse.â
WellâŠthat was something.
âYeah... I donât think itâs anything to worry about, though.â
Raven had screamed the moment she woke up, terrified out of her mind. She had been in hysterics for a total of five minuets before something snapped in her. To anyone who didnât know her that well, Raven would have looked normal, not looking at anyone, keeping a straight face while looking like she hated the world at the same time. But there was fear in her eyes, terror. She felt like at any moment she would either burst into tears, throw up or faint or all three at once. After being told they couldnât leave, which wasnât much of an issue to Raven, she didnât really have a home to go back to, she found herself leaning against a wall, trying to breath normally again and not cry, throw up or faint.Â
Dick was shaken, but anyone who didnât know him wouldnât be able to tell. He had his emotions under control, just as he always did, so he seemed as normal as ever as he walked through the halls, if not a bit tired. The nightmare kept replaying over and over in his head until he turned the corner and saw Raven, probably one of the only people who would be able to see through his facade. She looked as normal as ever on the outside, but he could see the gears turning.
âItâs gonna be hard getting back to sleep tonight with all this noise,â he said, knowing she wouldnât want to talk about whatever she had seen. He didnât want to talk about himself either, so it was a win-win.
âSo I, uhâ I guess it wasnât just âtriplet telepathy,â then, huh?â
âThatâs cool. Iâm know thereâs an even more scientific reason behind this whole phenomenon.â
âIâm not quite sure triplet telepathy is even a thing, but hey, youâre the expert.â
âYeah, there has to be. It makes no sense.â
Woken by her own screams, Kori stumbled out of bed, falling to the floor when her legs failed, weak from a mix of sore muscles and the visions she just witnessed. There was a wetness on her face, uncontrollable tears still streaming from her eyes as she desperately looked to Ravenâs bed only to find it empty. She ran into the hallway, thankful to see the presence of people. But before she could look for her friends, check to make sure they are still there, still breathing, bile rose in her throat and she barely made it to the nearest trash can in time. Be it from the alcohol unknowingly consumed at the dance, the nightmares that were still replaying in her mind, or the coppery smell that still resided in her nose, Kori heaved, throat burning. When her stomach is finally empty, she lifted her head, wiping her face and wondering if she really could have stopped it all from happening.Â
Dick was one of the last to wake up, his nightmare not letting him leave until it was truly satisfied it had made its mark. He almost hit his head as he sat up with a start, feeling as if he had been doused with water. It took him a few seconds to realize he was sweating profusely. Wiping the wetness from his eyes (he refused to believe they were tears), he stumbled out of bed. Ron and Nigel were no longer in the room, and he wondered where they had gotten to when he heard the commotion out in the hallway. It didnât take him long to throw the door open, and he was shocked by how many people were outside. He wondered whether something had happened without him knowing, perhaps to do with the dance, but then he overhead the many different conversations going on around him. People were speaking of nightmares and the horrors that had come with them. He was about to ask one of the nearby first years what was happening but was silenced by the sound of someone throwing up by the bins.
âKori!â he shouted, drowned out by the louder voices around him. He weaved through the crowd until he reached her, standing there awkwardly for a few seconds before rubbing her back slowly. âThis is a stupid question, but uh, are you okay?â
âIf only dances of school happened more frequently.â
âIf we had them too much weâd get sick of them.â
Tara repressed a groan. Dick had this annoying ability to see through someone who was trying to be stoic and cold. It was something she appreciated when killjoys like Rowen Queen or Helga Pataki hollered at the gang for goofing off, but being on the other end of it was beyond frustrating for her.
âYeah, actuallyâ She asserted, slipping her hands into her shorts pockets. âAnd I guess birds of a feather flock together, and all that jazz, right?â Now, Tara had very few feathers in common with Benedict, but she was willing to paint her own to look the part.Â
Dick was annoyed, certainly. This was someone he had come to trust. Not as much as his friends, but she had been close before she did a complete one-eighty. He wasnât an idiot. He knew something had happened to her while she had been absent, something big. It had to be for such a drastic personality change.
âBirds of a feather.â It wasnât a question, but he said it slowly enough for it to pass as one. It was almost as if he was taunting her, trying to make her think he actually believed her. All he wanted her to do was think about her actions. âAlright. If you want to end up dead, so be it. Not my problem.â
âWho let you make the rules of friendship?â
âNo one. But no one said I couldnât, so...â
âThis is a glorious song, is it not?â
âYeah, it is.â
calm, cool, and...definitely not collected // Dick&Kori
Kori giggled, lips twisting as to make a face in mock defense. âNot the only teenager. Just one of the only,â she corrected playfully. She had only been sitting next to him for a few seconds before a big smile was on her face, out of her control. She may have been the cheerful one, but there was no denying that she wouldnât be that ray of sunshine without her friends, especially without Dick. He may have looked stern and serious to anyone else, but Kori was able to see even the smallest of smiles he showed.
It was Koriâs turn to raise her eyebrows when he answered her question. âIf you need to do the ranting, you know I am a very good listener. That is what best friends are for.â The words were genuine, but the last two still left a bitter taste in her mouth. She promptly pulled out her mustard and pork-but mostly mustard-sandwich and took a bite. It didnât help the biting taste of those two words any.
âWell, youâre the only teenager I know of who would say that,â he said, digging into his lunch. There was a small smile on his face, the one reserved for her and her only. It was different than the one he showed the rest of his friends. All of them had their own different smile in his list of facial expressions. She had the softest, most kind one. Even when he was just thinking about her, he would smile that smile and his friends would tease him for it. He would deny everything, of course, not wanting them to know they were correct in every possible way.
At her offer, the corners of his mouth rose slightly higher. âThanks, Star. I donât need to rant, though, I promise.â He looked up at the doorway once again. The rest of their friends still hadnât arrived and he didnât know how long they would be. He had to at least slide the topic into her mind just in case he couldnât full out ask her this time.
Trying to remain as nonchalant as possible, he said, âSo, uh, you going to the dance?â
Um he just like magically has gloves??? I love how happy Robin is to take the tux off and how Starfire is  surprised.
âNah, why would I. Itâs a dance, there will be more.â
âTrue. They have them multiple times a year.â
âOh well. guess I can liveâ
âNo guessing about it. Youâll have to. So youâre not freaking out about the dance like most teenage girls?â
calm, cool, and...definitely not collected // Dick&Kori
Kori giggled nervously. âAh, class was veryâŠnice today,â she admit, leaving out what made it better than the usual boring lecture. It was funny that the person she wanted to tell everything to was currently the one she was keeping the most from. Kori could be a risky person, but here it wasnât it worth it. Admitting her feelings wouldnât be like admitting to any other crush. Dick and her had something special, and if that special something was meant to be just a friendship, then she could live with that.Â
She could live with never knowing what it would be like to have his hand hold hers, only knowing in her dreams what his kiss felt like, seeing him fall in love with someone else.
On second thought, maybe it would just kill her.Â
Even when so in depth in her own thoughts, the nervousness of his actions was not lost on her. âHow is your day? You are not stressing yourself out, are you?â
Dick raised an eyebrow. âClass was nice? Youâre probably the only teenager I know who would say that.â There were many things about Kori that were different from other teenagers, but that was just part of her charm. It made him only more curious about her and her life before Network, and while he knew she would (mostly) willingly talk about it, he didnât like to ask just in case. Besides, a personâs past did not define them, but their current actions. That was all that mattered to him when it came to her.
At her question, he tensed up slightly. So she had noticed. At least she didnât see completely through him. âNo, Iâm not stressed at all.â It was only half a lie, in his mind. He was stressed, just not about the usual things like school work or how his guardian was back at home.
What if that meant she wasnât even thinking about the dance?
He wanted to bury his face in his hands right then and there, but he knew that would earn a confused and worried reaction from the girl beside him. He really needed to stop making assumptions based on absolutely nothing. It would drive him crazy.
