POMPEY MAGNUS.

Pompey is quick to fasten on his armor and sword, head tilting towards Caesar as he listens to him speak. This is where he thrives: the chaos of war. Any other person might be overwhelmed, but he feels oddly calm…for many reasons. He looks out where Caesar points, lets out a breath.

“Twenty–alright…we’re outnumbered five to one…but numbers don’t necessarily mean anything when you have the right army.” Pompey furrows his brow, shakes his head. Caesar’s right. Chaos will ensue and many will die if they don’t act immediately. “We need to start fortifying right now, Caius, if we’re to keep them at bay for any decent amount of time.”

                        jilted by his somber tone, cleopatra tore herself away from the quarterly report she’d been studying. the day had been spent on little else, as had the days prior. for months, cleo woke each morning with one goal in mind – to take back control of her father’s company. the work she’d done had certainly strengthened her position, but cleo was nothing if not thorough. for, once she had it back, she did not intend to lose it AGAIN. 

                       when cleo stood, she did not speak, the surrounding stillness punctuated by the clacking of her heels on the floor. with how comfortable she’d become in his presence, cleo no longer felt the urge to constantly fill the silence. but that comfort came at a cost – cracks had begun to form in her facade, allowing glimpses of her humor and youthful naïveté. once at the bar cart, she poured them both a drink, the smile she wore as unrestrained as the humor in her voice. 

                          “now –” she chided, ever gently. “ – don’t tell me you’ve let those old fools get to you. there are far more important things to concern yourself with than the opinions of the senile.” 

                          it was easy to forget the years between them; after all, he was far closer in age to those ‘ old fools ’ than he was to the girl before him. yet, cleo found herself enamored all the same; never before had she met someone so worthy of her respect. & whatever did differences matter, when measured against shared ambition? with practiced steps, cleo drew herself closer, an arm outstretched to offer him one of the glasses. 

                       “ – i should think the GREAT CAESAR, above all,                            would be familiar with the costs of greatness.” 

the   days   of   smiling   buoyancy   are   long   over   in   his   case .         perhaps   julius   caesar   has   become   an   old   man .         bitter ,     perhaps .         he   has   grown   weary   of   endlessly   palavering   over   the   same   drafts ,     𝙿𝙴𝚁𝙷𝙰𝙿𝚂   𝚆𝙴𝙰𝚁𝚈   𝙾𝙵   𝙳𝙴𝙼𝙾𝙲𝚁𝙰𝙲𝚈   𝙸𝚃𝚂𝙴𝙻𝙵 .         cleopatra’s   youth   -   though   her   maturity   is   beyond   any   doubt   -   is   a   stark   contrast   with   the   stuffiness   of   parliament .         ❝            those   old   fools  are   closer   to   me   in   age   than   you   are .           ❞          the   smile   he   offers   her   is   a   wry   one ,   but   appreciative   nonetheless   of   the   drink   she   offers   him .

he   gulps   down   the   liquor .         sighs   at   the   draft   in   front   of   him   that   seems   to   mock   him .         rising   to   his   feet ,     he   walks   to   the   window .         𝚃𝙾𝙳𝙰𝚈   𝙲𝙰𝙻𝙻𝚂   𝙵𝙾𝚁   𝙰   𝙲𝙸𝙶𝙰𝚁𝙴𝚃𝚃𝙴 .         a   glance   into   the   night ,       glass   still   in   his   hands .         ❝           they   are   a   tiresome   bunch .         sometimes   i   wonder      -      nevermind .         ❞

smoke   drifts   away   after   he   sets   the   cigarette   alight .          caesar   does   not   linger     -     returns   to   stand   by   her   side .           pensive ,     considering   her   comment .             ❝           that     i     am .           the   price   is   worth   it       -       but   it   is   a   heavy   one .                  ❞

“War?”

Pompey blinks, seemingly frozen in shock for a moment.

In that moment, when they make eye contact, when Caesar gestures for him to come along, it’s as if everything that happened between them has dissipated. War–Alexandria is under attack? Pompey is quick to stand, absently attempting to tame his hair as he walks over to join Caesar.

“A second in command…” He tries not to smile. “Tell me what’s happened, then. Do you have my sword and armor locked up somewhere? I’m going to need that.”

The war is over, and somehow, Pompey has managed to survive, but what does surviving truly mean? A man, stripped of his confidence, of his dignitas, of his...everything. What is surviving if the only thing left is humiliation?

He sits there with a sigh, head in his hands. The temptation to do the honorable thing and end himself is too great, but Caesar wouldn’t allow that. No weapons in his room or anything else that could be used in such a way. Pompey has to wonder what he gets from this. After all this, could Caesar still be trusted? Could anything between them be salvaged?

Doubtful.

He pick at a loose thread on his tunic, brow furrowed, head lifting when the door opens. “Ah–Caesar,” he says, nodding his head in acknowledgement. “What is it now?”

❝           WAR .           ❞           he   is   swift ,           almost   forgets   to   acknowledge   the   immense   rift   between   them           -           it   feels   as   if   it’s   the   year   of   his   consulship   again ,           695   years   after   the   founding   of   rome ,           this   eternal ,           glorious   city .
