It if weren’t for the brick wall behind him—colored dangerously red, too, which gave Sakura an image he did not want to think too hard about—it seemed like his head would loll back entirely, like his spine were for decoration. He was out cold.

Summary

Sakura is the type to dwell on the past, but he’s also the type to look toward the future. That combination is what drives him to never repeat history. He learns from his mistakes, and does his absolute best to never repeat them. It’s commendable. It’s admirable. Suo respects Sakura deeply for it.

But it’s also a very slippery slope. And he thinks Sakura Haruka is a bit of a tortured, fraying, slipping boy.

A lesson in which party self-deprecation hurts more.

Excerpt

“It’s only seven…” Nirei speaks up just over the leaves, and even if it’s a simple statement, it says a lot, and he agrees wholeheartedly. It is only seven, and here they are. “Did he at least eat breakfast beforehand?”

Suo moves his gaze to Nirei, who looks up from the phone in his hand to Sakura’s sweaty, panting form, and then to his co-vice. He’s biting his lip again, canines along old scabs. Suo has the urge to flick his chin to get him to stop.

He turns back to the fight, where Hiragi is growing increasingly annoyed and the Look in Sakura’s eyes is turning increasingly desperate. “He sure didn’t!” he answers with faux cheer, and doesn’t need to look at Nirei to know the face he’s making.

His words are tight with a bitter undertone, discolored an ugly pale green like the tomatoes growing in patches at the other end of the roof. He clasps his hands against the small of his back a little tighter to dig out the unease from its resting place.

Haruka blinks. Huh? Did Momijikawa just say that? He didn't see his lips move, but it's not like there's anybody else there. He doubts the ghost of Momijikawa's grandmother is making such ludicrous statements.

"W-what?"

In Sakura's time of need, Momijikawa offers him a place to stay. Surely, this will change nothing about their relationship.

"Momi-chan, huh?", Kiryu grins at him as they finally exit the classroom, "Cute."

Haruka blinks. What does he mean by that?

"Uh, sure", Haruka can feel himself blushing against his will, "'s nice of him."

Kiryu shares a look with Suo that Haruka can't decipher. Nirei seems to realize something and looks between the three of them like he's watching a tennis match.

"Riiiight", Kiryu winks, "And no ulterior motives or anything."

Suo nods sagely. "Of course not."

Flustered and annoyed, Haruka begins walking faster. He doesn't understand what they're giggling about but he knows it's at his expense. Assholes.

Suo was on his knees, his hand still shackled behind his back. His gaze was locked on the plush brown carpet of the small receiving room. He was still doing his best to pretend he wasn’t there, to not think about the future, to ignore the preparations being made in one corner. They involved a brazier and an array of small, very sharp knives. Suo wasn’t thinking about it. If he let himself think about it, he would start shaking, and he didn’t think he would ever be able to stop.

“About Lord She Quan,” he said, and Suo heard the note of warning that his brother allowed to creep into his voice. “He was very upset when he discovered you had disappeared. And he’s not…known for being overly careful of his possessions.”

Zhi Niao folded his arms across his chest, his face set in a hard scowl. “He’s going to try to break you,” he said, bluntness laid over anger laid over pain.

“He is,” Ying Ao agreed, sorrow and fear in his eyes. “My advice is to let him.”

Suo’s eyebrows drew together. “Let him try?”

“No. Let him break you.” His gaze held Suo’s, and his voice was level as the surface of water that hides deep currents. “Let him have his triumph. But don’t let him have anything of yourself.”

“No more than a servant’s duty,” Zhi Niao said. “Give your owner what he wants. That way he doesn’t keep trying harder to get it.”

Exhausting yes, but now I’m thinking about Suo actually enjoying his two hour train rides. Because that’s probably the only time he’s alone and doesn’t have to worry about looking after other people. He reads a book. He studies his languages. Maybe he actually naps. Feels safe enough to eat a little snack bc he’s alone and there’s no one he knows around to see 😭
