there's something about the fact that hiragi did have this big following in middle school and that he was probably used to people turning to him (and maybe even fawning over him) - due to the fact that a) he was strong and b) he was genuinely kind & good

and yet umemiya didn't outright want him for those reasons - he wanted him around for the complete opposite reason

HATE.

umemiya needed someone who was going to be objective.

was it important that hiragi was a good person? yes absolutely. but he's a good person with strong emotions. he's not going to let umemiya's selfishness override what's best for his home.
