I’m sorry and maybe you won’t agree but to me Discovery just feels like they took Star Trek, substracted all the Star Trek then filles the gaps with blood, violence and backstories so fucked up they feel like a 12yo girl’s OCs.
I don't agree. Feels like none of you can see the forest through the trees. It's still filled with hope, optimism, pushing for a better tomorrow and striving through adversity. It just doesn't insult your intelligence and hammer you over the head with a speech in every episode and expects you actually infer that through character growth and story development. I love the older Treks, they're what I grew up on, but this whole nonsense of 'DSC removes the Trek from Trek' is just that. Nonsense. But it's also pretty endemic of what's wrong with Trekkies in general. Anything different must be wrong, despite the whole tagline of the series being 'Infinite Diversity through Infinite Combinations'. God forbid it show things in a different light. God forbid it show things in a different way. And god forbid it just exist. The show has been over for years but people can't help but just randomly, out of nowhere, be like "Fuck that show." No one cares what it might mean to other people, especially with it having the first representation of any gay main character, of having a nonbinary main character, of having a trans character. Shit that can mean a lot to people, like it did to me, because after loving Trek for years it finally showed me on the screen. But nah. Fuck that show right. It's all blood and violence and backstories despite being unable to watch it.
Keep that Star Wars whiny bullshit out of my Trek, kthx.

Modern Star Trek being dark and showing war or post-apocalyptic scenarios SO THAT THE HEROES CAN CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR HOPE, OPTIMISM, AND CONNECTION ANYWAY. Stories that never show the main heroes succumbing to cynicism IF YOU ARE PAYING ATTENTION, And the cynics either learn better or are villains, is NOT “anti-trek” actually.

100%. And it is a media literacy problem too because DS9 doesn't get moaned about for being insanely dark, full of violence and war, and littered with the worst examples humanity has to offer. Why? Because most episodes also bludgeon you over the head with a hopeful speech or a neat bow that wraps it all up in a way to keep fighting the fight.
People say they're complaining about a lack of hope and optimism in the newer shows but in reality they're just incapable, or unwilling, to accept hope unless it is from a place where nothing is at risk. Where every line can be reset the next week and nothing changes. Where people barely grow and evolve.
I met someone who insisted that the modern shows and old shows were in different timelines, caused by one temporal infraction. Dude could not provide a single example supporting his claim but said his theory explained everything. These people were only ever watching Star Trek. Not understanding it. Not absorbing it. They're an embarrassment to the fandom and themselves.
I LOVE DS9, but there are definitely people who notice what it’s saying because it’s in a familiar format while having to thematically process a modern style streaming show is somehow a bridge too far for them.
Oh I'm not saying DS9 is bad. Not at all. Just that the syndicated way of telling stories was still very much a part of it. Personally I've got plenty of gripes with DS9 but I seem to be the only person who does so I just tend to keep that to myself. But I've heard people give DSC shit for being too dark while saying DS9 is their favorite. What kind of clown ass buffoonery is that
