Just read Urban Legends #1-6 (Red Hood and Batman: Cheer)
Thoughts (not well formulated, dont treat it as a analysis either)👇
Jason's Characterization and relationship with Bruce
In short, he had good characterization. He was well rounded and layers (for once)
At first, he seemed very one dimensional, only used to show that Bruce is the paragon of justice (which it kinda does but theres more to it)
The comic shows that Bruce and Jason switched their tactics in facing the conflict through the story the more they reflected on their relationship. Jason became more and more strategic in hunting down Cheer while Bruce got less strategic and brute forced his way to Cheer. This forces them to be faced with the flaws of their ways like Jason realizing that detective work is more efficient at finding information while Bruce being more effective at finding cheer through brute forced.
However, the ending was very much a "Bruce's way is the only correct way" which I don't think it is bad because Bruce eventually letting go of Jason's method while Jason succeeds with Bruces strategies. Like how much can you defend the "all criminals must die" argument without sounding like the villain. In the end Batman is a hero while Red Hood is a antihero. I do like that with that narrative, they didn't completely butcher Red Hood's character. He learned and changed from batman but at his core, he is the dark side to batmans coin. (Almost like absolute batman if you think about it)
Cheer
I also really liked Cheer as a villain. He is a lot like the joker but in a better way yk. He wasn't just a batman villain trying to take over gotham through *high society/ underground*. He was well connected to his victims in gotham and not just batman. However, his backstory, design and motive felt very unoriginal. It was like if you stitched the joker and and scarecrow into a singular character. I still really like Cheer as a plot device because it served 2 main purposes.
1) it allowed both Jason and Bruce to face what they wanted out of each other: family and love. It was such a interesting look into how similar their idea of happiness were and that the reason they can't seem to be happy together is that they were too similar. Jason's, vision of happiness was for Bruce to kill the joker and give up Batman for his family but he knows that he didn't want that out of Bruce. He knows he and many others need Bruce as the hero, as the backup for when they fall and so that must come before happiness.
Bruce's vision of happiness also involved killing the Joker and bringing peace, but he knows that killing the joker leads to destruction and will prevent him from the happiness he wishes for (i loved the visual storytelling in that part). In the end, batman works well with those who contrast him, not those who are reflective of him.
2)
Trigger warning: discussions of Drugs and Addictions
the cheer drug was a fairly good portrayal of gotham society and drugs. I liked how it didn't demonize the drug addicts and instead, framed them as victims of the system. The thing with Jason and Tyler was also a great reflection of Jason's childhood because it allowed for Jason to reflect upon himself. However, I am a little iffy on Tyler's dad not caring about Tyler and his mother and then Jason killing him. It could've been a great example as to how most criminals were just victims too and how they survive and adding another layer of guilt for Jason to feel.
I do liked how it also showed Jason's relationship with his mother and his childhood before Robin. It doesn't just say that Jason was reckless and irresponsible, it showed why he was that way. He personally saw how his mother was taken advantaged of by drug dealers and through that, he built a resentment towards people like that. It also showed that he was essentially kicked to the side by the adults in his life, or atleast it did from his perspective (he is a unreliable narrator, also check out this post i made).
This is probably the fourth time they've tabled a discussion about Jason fighting a rogue when he isn't supposed to, only for the discussion to never happen. Starting to sense a theme here.
Jason is reckless, but he is also 12 years old. His frontal lobe has barely developed and yall take for granted the decision making skills you have because a trusted adult taught you it. Jason basically lived on his own for years bc his guardians are busy making ends meet (i will not tolerate Todd's slander, that is classism). It was Bruce's responsibility as Jason's trusted adult to teach.
This applies for all iterations of Jason's story, some most just don't fully cover the reasons for his "recklessness"
Pride month being right after eurovision is the reason for my awakening.
"Zitti e buoni" by Måneskin eurovision 2021 performance
This was the moment I realized that I had a massive crush on both Victoria De Angelis and Damiano David. Pride month then led to me learning that I can have a crush on both a guy and a girl. It also lead to me learning more about punk rock and alternative culture which is major part of me exploring and expanding my style. I would say that it was my first step out of pop media.
duke thomas spends 10+ years getting comics and growth and plot and hes "too new" and people "dont know him well enough". superboy prime gets five minutes of character development and hes suddenly a fan favorite getting shipped with every character under the sun. i hate this fandom.
