Karl Fousek emerged last year as a notable newcomer working in the experimental electronics field, with gorgeous tapes on Phinery and Adhesive-Sounds. The Montrealer now returns with Pattern Variation, a new tape of tone and pattern studies released in-tandem with Demonstration Synthesis’ DS17. Here we find Fousek producing a paced and balanced series of sound pattern studies, resembling a pointillistic collage somewhere between Steve Reich and Aphex Twin, specifially Mr. D. James’ “ Bucephalus Bouncing Ball,” abstracted into a sublime din that ebbs and flows from track to track. Upbeat cycles “Second” and “Seventh” ride a blissful series of computed modulations that spiral in and out of consciousness, while slower, more meditative numbers “Eighth” and “Fourth” could be spiritual ancestors of Northeastern cosmonauts like Ben Vida, Keith Fullerton Whitman, or Greg Davis punching out sequences of bucolic synthesis. The calculated manias of “Sixth” and “Fifth” round out the whole with precise drills of sequenced and processed tones. All in all, it’s a fascinating and bold turn for such a young label.
