One of the things I feel like I don't see discussed enough by the ISFF crowd is injection safety. I see them preaching DIY HRT a lot (not because I want to, I cannot escape it because Tumblr keeps recommending posts even when I block them), and my thoughts on the dangers of DIYing your hormones aside, I am SO sick and tired of seeing their crew saying that it's totally safe to reuse needles!! It's not!!! You should NEVER reuse needles, regardless of the economic impact to you. That is dangerous both because of the damage to the needle, and the risk of infection to you. Needles are disposable for a reason, and you should absolutely be consulting with a doctor on the proper procedure to give yourself injectables, NOT some random on the internet who says it's safe to use the same needle 3-5 times

even when i was desperately stretching my own HRT and supplies, I WENT TO MY PHARMACY AND ASKED FOR SYRINGES AND NEEDLES. most places especially if they are a harm reduction site will do EVERYTHING in their power to make sure you don't reuse sharps and needles.

if you are going to DIY (at your own risk as it is!) at the very very very least always make sure your implements are clean and disinfected.

dirty needles = dead girls, every single time. do not let survivorship biased DIY'ers convince you that you will be fine.

You can buy needles pretty dirt cheap in bulk from the pharmacy. There are waivers and coupons you can find online.

Harm reduction centers and needle exchange programs will be the BEST option (look for ones local to you, using those terms and any other similar ones you’re aware of; there may even be online programs to help with this issue in more rural/less developed areas without as many pharmacies and medical offices) for people really strapped for cash and struggling to keep up with all the little costs, but if that’s not an option for you, please at least tell someone who loves you that you need fresh medical supplies and that the box of needles/syringes you normally get costs X amount at Y pharmacy. Tell multiple someones who can pool a bit of money together.

Why does this matter?

Guess how you get tetanus? It’s not from scraping your knee or leg on a rusty fence wire. That doesn’t get deep enough into your epidermis for tetanus to take hold. No, tetanus comes from a puncture wound that gets infected! And guess what you are creating when you inject with a needle you cannot guarantee is disinfected? Tetanus complications include things like lockjaw, which will take away your ability to eat on your own.

Please be smart and safe. DIY if you must, if it’s the best (or only) option for you. It’s definitely easier for trans women to DIY than trans men (in the US at least), so take advantage of that gap in restricted drugs if you need to. But for the love of every god that’s ever been dreamed up, DO NOT REUSE YOUR NEEDLES! The very end of the tip could have broken off and now it’s not as insertable, it could have who knows what germs from being out to use prior and out while using and out while you figured out how to get it stored away more safely, it’s not worth the risk of deadly diseases. (Tetanus is just the risk that came to mind for me fastest, because my mom was always freaking out about me maybe getting tetanus as a kid, and finally I got scraped bad by a rusty fence and she gave in and took me to the doctor, and the doctor explained that tetanus needs more than a scrape to infect you.)

AND DON’T REUSE YOUR SYRINGES EITHER!!! Once it’s out of the sterile casing, that’s it! Bacteria can and will get in it! If you reuse ur sterile casing you open urself up to a HUGE infection risk!!! You can even get supplies for cheat as shit in amazon, DON’T REUSE ANYTHING

What is up with lefty types pushing to learn practical skills (sewing/gardening/etc whatever) as like "you'll need to know this after The Revolution:tm:" and not, like, "this is a useful skill to help yourself & others in your communities Right Now". not just any MP, but an undersecretary for migration and citizenship. this guy is one of the MPs that has a direct hand on the genuinely horrific treatment of migrants and refugees in the UK, including shipping them off to the UK's former colony after unilaterally declaring the colony to be safe, as well as stripping the migrant and refugees of their heirlooms in the name of "paying for their migration in the UK with their own assets."
