“I’m sorry, I’m probably going to be holed up in my study working on this case all day.” Matthew lifted his teacup to his lips and wiped his mouth with a napkin after finishing his breakfast. “I’m so sorry we’ve been seeing so little of each other lately.”

      Dora raised an eyebrow at his statement, clearing her throat in embarrassment. How could a man forget his own birthday? It was beyond her to imagine the reasons that could lead to such forgetfulness. “Alright, darling...” she said as she nibbled at her muffin. “We have, indeed. That’s why I had planned to take you to the opera tonight. You know, as an occasion for us to spend time together, and as a present...” she hinted.

If Matthew was being quite honest, he wasn’t much of a fan of work parties either. His personality just wasn’t suited to parties to begin with, but work made it worse because the whole purpose of going to these things was to bolster his own career. He’d been practicing law for five years with some distinction, after having graduated from Oxford on a scholarship. Some of these people were bluebloods or close to it, which admittedly made him a bit uncomfortable.

It was ironic that his wife came from their world, but he hadn’t been thinking of that when they were dating, or when they married. It was the 21st century for heaven’s sake, the aristocracy was an ancient idea to begin with, and he didn’t see how any of that sort of thing mattered. Of course he was aware that his colleagues judged him for coming from nothing in their eyes and marrying above him, but he paid them as little attention as possible.

He couldn’t however ignore his wife when she grabbed his arm. He quickly placed his wine on a tray to keep it from spilling over his new suit, and gaped at her. “Darling, no, I’d really rather not.” It was obvious she’d had a bit too much to drink, and he was in no mood to make a spectacle of himself today. His trying to dance would be a tragedy to begin with, but her over-enthusiasm would make it worse.

      Dora pouted as Matthew refused her, but she quickly turned her attention elsewhere, shrugging. “Well, I will find myself someone else then,” she teased as she glanced towards her husband. After all, she had known his character when she had married him.

   Where she was quick to be loud and an extrovert, Matthew preferred to remain discreet and was rather shy. She had been the one going after him after they had met through mutual friends, and after having insisted for several weeks, he had finally agreed to go out with her. From that moment onward, they had had their ups and downs, but they had stayed together. 

   However, at parties, when they met strangers, they often failed to see why the couple was staying together, as they appeared so mismatched. This evening wouldn’t be any different from the other. As soon as she was on the dance floor, she started dancing and swaying her hips, which attracted several of Matthew’s colleagues, around whom she happily wrapped her arms. 

   “That wife of yours, she’s quite a bit, isn’t she?” One of Matthew’s colleague commented with a smug grin as he came to stand by the young barrister.

"Then stop bossing me around!"

“I’m not bossing you around. I’m simply asking you to be more discreet.”

      “Oh, so you are ashamed of me, then?” Theodora raised her eyebrow.

"You haven't left your house in weeks. I think it's high time I took you out, so get in the shower if you don't want me giving you a bath."

“Shut up. I’m in mourning.”

Lucretia attempts to close the door on Dora. She doesn’t want to deal with anybody else. There’s still a large gaping hole in her heart after Jamie’s death.

“They’re with Malcolm?” Dora repeated, deadpan. “Oh you might as well have let them run lose in the nearest forest, it will give the same results - only with more swearing!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms over her hand as she disappeared in the kitchen, before coming back with a rubbish plastic bag. She began to throw everything that came under hand into it, her back turned to Lucretia. “You could have given them to me, I would have put them to the nursery with Charlie…” she grumbled.

“Malcolm is a decent man when it comes to kids. He won’t swear at them,” she replies, a little bit of that old spark coming into her eyes and voice. “I wasn’t thinking straight – besides, if Malcolm’s bad, you’re just as bad – you’ll corrupt Lizzie with your loose ways.”

"I'll corrupt her with medical vocabulary, that's it," Dora snorted. "But seriously, Malcolm? I mean, he just lost his best friend as well. I do think it was selfish of you to let him take charge of your child above all things," she pointed out. "I'll go and pick Lizzie once I'm done here, she'll be glad to see Charlie I suppose."

“Suicide isn’t about being an idiot,” Dora points out, letting herself inside the house. “Jesus, look at the mess,” she exclaims, pointing towards the living room where leftovers are scattered. “This is not mourning,” she grumbles as she starts to clean up. “For God’s sake Lucretia, where are the children?”

      She hated those barristers parties. All those men out of Eton and Cambridge and Oxford, thinking themselves kings of the world and far more superior to anyone else, and so little women! She’d have to cling to Matthew’s arm all night long, because she found the spouses as boring and stuck-up as their husbands. Not that she was not from the same background as them; better still, her father had had an aristocratic title, not that it meant much anymore nowadays. 

  Besides, Theodora knew what most of them thought of Matthew’s wedding with her. They wondered why he had married a woman older than him, and richer - as if it was a shame that she was, indeed, the wealthiest of the two. She could shrug those worries away at home, but when she was in the same room as them, she couldn’t help but feel somewhat judged. Ah well, the one good thing was the free food and drinks. 

  Dora got tipsy, because there was nothing else to do. And everything seemed way funnier that way. So when the music came in, she did not hesitate and in the blink of an eye, she was on the dancefloor, trying to pull Matthew with her. “Come on, I love this song!” she grinned as she tugged at his sleeve.

"Take your hand off me. I'm just a friend now — just like you wanted it."

Matthew let his hand fall to his side, his expression wounded, although he looked away to gather his composure. He had, in truth, been avoiding her since their last rendezvous, feeling as if they would be found out if they continued. “I don’t know what we were. I was trying to figure that out.”

“Seducing a MP, that would have been novelty,” she reflected with a grin. “I mean, someone elected by the people that is. I did have some relationships with one or two Lords, but they have permanent seats, don’t they?” she inquired. “I don’t know much about politics I’m afraid,” she confessed with a shrug. “I mean, I don’t have a say in the matter as a woman, so why should I be interested?”

She felt him stiffen against her as she mentioned Mary finding a husband, and she sighed. “Matthew, I think you should stop pretending you do not care about your dear cousin Mary, it is very tiring for the both of us,” Theodora shook her head as she wriggled herself free of his embrace. “I do not like fighting with little girls over the affection of someone.”  

“Yes, that’s right.” Matthew confirmed with a nod. “And that’s just one of the things I would have changed had I been an MP–my mother is very Liberal, which is something she’s passed on to me. I think women should certainly get the vote, be involved in every aspect of our government. It might make me an eccentric Earl to think so, but it’s true.”

He folded his hands in his lap as she withdrew from his arms, and sighed. “Of course I care, we’re family.” he responded with an unconvincing smile, looking up at her. His lips twisted into a scowl at her comment. “What on earth would she think of me–even if she did feel something–knowing that…” He didn’t finish the statement, and instead ran his hand through his hair. “Whether I care is irrelevant now.”

      “Such great views, perhaps it’s not too late to get elected?” she teased him as she poked at his chest. “Though I fear you wouldn’t get much support from your male colleagues, I’m afraid. I once knew this man who had a permanent seat at the Lords, he kept repeating me how ridiculous the notion of “Vote for Women” was - and he said it all to my face, like it meant nothing!” she chuckled. 

  Theodora rolled her eyes. “You would like her to be more than simply family, I reckon,” she pointed out. “Knowing what? That you are fucking a friend of the family?” she said bluntly. “Come on Matthew, this is absolutely relevant to this situation. The thought of you thinking about someone else when we’re together is mortifying. It reminds me of my first husband, except he thought about his butler and not his cousin!”

       Theodora rolled her eyes and snorted. “I said the same to my first husband on our wedding night, I thought it would be a great ice breaker,” she retorted. “Oh please do, those are such great things to be exchanged over the breakfast table, darling,” she grinned. 

“How very charming. I do hope you’ve been more sincere since.” Matthew intoned, shaking his head as his crossed his arms over the table. “Alright–let’s start with how you begged me to take charge–it was really rather darling, but considering the fact that it was only our second time together, it was a bit amusing.”

      “Have I? I wonder...” she said, slightly tapping her lips with her finger, a sly grin playing on her face. “Hmm, perhaps, but saying you love someone is so trivial, and it makes people so happy when you speak those words,” she said pensively. “Oh please, I never begged,” she rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. “Or at least, my “begging” is nothing compared to your moaning and whimpering.”

      “Oh I think you know the occasion very well without having me voicing it out for me, darling,” she smirked behind her teacup. “Oh, like you professing your undying love to me last night in the library?” she arched an eyebrow with a mocking innocent tone.

“As I recall it, the first time you told me that you loved me was during a similar occurrence.” Matthew replied, his eyes dancing unerringly. “Shall I remind you of some of the most amusing things you’ve said to me?” He tilted his head, leaning forward a bit.
